Dr. Axe, I am so grateful for you and how the Lord is using you in your platform. I have been following many of your tips now. Starting with increasing my protein intake throughout my meals and I have finally started loosing stubborn hypo weight I had gained and couldn’t drop. I have already lost 8 pounds in a span of about 2 months also added walks after every meal.
Thank you Dr Axe may the Lord bless you and your family 🙏🏼🥹

I agree that protein is the most important macronutrient. You mentioned that protein can help you lose weight because it makes you burn more body fat and feel satiated. But protein can also help you gain weight if you are very thin because it helps build muscle.

I grew up in a medical family, my grandparents had lots of protein, but because my family & extended family was in the medical profession, when the low fat study was leaked...all of them switched to low fat...because "why would they study it if is wasn't the best?" Our protein went way down, carbs went up. Since being very sick I have tried ever way of eating. Prioritizing Protein is the only way as a menopausal female I can get enough protein. It has to be protein first and all else is a "nice to have." Get your protein, save your muscles, save your bones!

Dr. Axe... my husband passed away back in June from kidney disease and complications from a rare disease called diabetic amyotrophy neuropathy which destroys muscles throughout the body. Since he had kidney disease, stage 5, he was told he had to decrease his protein intake because his creatinine levels were so high, and that caused his Glomular function rate to drop consistently. We were making progress until he wanted to eat what he wanted, and everything went downhill from there. He couldn't do dialysis because of his muscles atrophying, and he had too much scar tissue in his stomach area from when he got attacked by a bore on a bore hunting trip with his feiends when he was stationed in Hawaii..., so dialysis was out of the picture... perhaps you could help me understand why people with kidney disease can't eat protein.... thanks... 😊

As a kidney dietitian I can answer that question. As the kidneys decline they are no longer able to filter out as well a waste product from muscles called creatinine, and it rises in the blood. Protein especially from meats creates waste products when it gets metabolized that the kidneys now have to filter out and that further damages the glomerulus or the filtering units of the kidney. Protein restriction helps to preserve kidney function. But that does not mean that you eat no protein at all and become malnourished. You still have to eat adequate protein but not excessive protein. Once you go on dialysis you will be recommended extra protein.

Beef, full fat Greek yogurt, and eggs are super foods I put into my body each and every day. I also supplement with a high quality whey protein (Naked and Levels are both excellent protein brands with minimal ingredients) I’m about 195 lbs and shoot for 150-200 grams of protein per day.
    Also supplement with creatine monohydrate!

Interesting video. The Mayo Clinic advises .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. I try to limit the amount of carbohydrates, regardless of how much protein I consume. When you talk about kidney disease, does age have an effect? An NIH study of the effect of high protein on cats, showed “Increased dietary protein/calorie intake significantly increased glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria in all cats. However, high protein/calorie intake resulted in significant renal morphologic injury in remnant kidney cats that was prevented by dietary protein/calorie restriction.” I realize cats aren’t people, (except for my two, LOL) but I would presume the basics are the same? You are saying that the protein source is the problem, not the protein itself? That would completely change my understanding of how protein effects the kidneys. Thank you for introducing me to this idea. More “food” for thought. Pun intended!

@@rubenperalesRD There is a study by the NIH, published October 22, 2021, that says, "low protein diets (LPD) have beneficial effects in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The vegetarian-supplemented, very-low-protein diets seem to have an additional positive effect on patient and kidney survival." There are cautions about malnutrition, but that properly supplemented, the diets are effective.

It's not the protein that hurts the kidneys it's diabetes or high blood pressure most of the the time. Once the kidneys are damaged by these diseases then the protein restriction is needed as the patient progresses through the stages of chronic kidney disease.
