I think eternatus would have looked more like a dragon or snake, something of a mix between Porygon and Garydos, but amazing work on all these designs as always!
I would say I would more look like the skeletal aerodactyl, but black and red instead
I thought snake too. Like a skeleton snake.
I thought it was supposed to be a centipede or something
Like Rayquaza’s skeleton but more veiny
Yeah... but wanna know why it doesn't look like a pokemon? IS BECAUSE IT'S JUST A RIP OFF OF SOMEONE FROM KINGDOM HEARTS! Xemnas's dragon form. Even the name! All the guy ever spoke about was: ETERNAL!
This should become a series
MCharizard Gaming Yeah, I wanna know more about the design philosophy of Gen 1!
Please
Sadly it can't because of COPPA.
That comment just earned you a subscriber :)
absolutley
“Most of the strongest Pokémon stand upright, with arms, legs, and somewhat humanoid designs”
*Mr. Mime intensifies*
Soup Santoni-Costantini Jynx says hello.
Magikarp splashes menacingly.
Mr. Stealyourmom
Gyarados: *clears throat*
@@AmericanGTS Believe it or not, Jynx was the third best psychic type pokemon in competetive RBY with only Starmie and Alakazam being better. Tough you can argue it ties with Executor.
I'd honestly like to see a "What would GEN 1 look like today?" series. Its crazy how accurate they can capture the art style of both vastly different eras
The eternatus is like what every thought mewthree would be :)
Anthony Bebbington God yes

Raticate is a good boy and deserves more love
Raticate is an adorable hamster and you will never convince me otherwise. But tell someone to stop overfeeding Alolan Raticate.
@@BonaparteBardithion he's a 5 star chef, telling him to stop eating is like telling him to stop breathing.
Could you do a “ applin but it’s in other fruit” video and what it’s evolutions would look like in those different fruit
PLEASE.
THIS.
Imagine a coconut wielding dragon thing
Tanner Richards A pure dragon Applin could be one coming out if an egg. Than flapple uses the eggs as its wings. And Appletun idk? Maybe it becomes an omlette or cake? Or just a normal dragon
What about Jotho Applin? Maybe instead of an apple, it inhabits an Apricorn berry, that also serves as its Pokéball?
You sir are a GENIUS 👊
For me Sobble's final evolution looks like Rango but sassy.
Ha I like that thought
I forgot what that Pokémon's name is. That's how forgetable he is.
I just didn't like the design much. Also, thanks.
It's literally Kermit the Frog
Ngl the grimsnarl designed in gen 1 style looks like he could be a Dragonball villian
Grimsnarl: Son Goku...I am Here to Prove that even I, AM EVIL!
@SMD sth91 Yep.
Gen 1 Pokémon do have a general reminiscent of Dragon Ball characters, specially on their eyes.
I wonder if Ken Sugimori got its inspiration on Akira Toriyama's artstyle.
@@Dexuz Probably did. Dragon ball is pretty big even then, after all, and with DBZ, the show became eclaimed EVERYWHERE. Especially at home base.
Looks 1000x better than the actual Grimsnarl
I really love these *'retro-designs'* for the Gen 8 Pokemon, Grimmsnarl is my favorite from them! it clearly goes to show from The roster of Pokemon that *James Turner is the Art Director of Sword and Shield games* - in an interview where he was drawing his distinct Vanillite while asked questions, he explained that he prefers doing more peculiar and *(literally and figuratively)* alien pokemon designs and doesn't draw that much traditional conventional designs, for example in addition to his trademark *Vanillite line* , he drew things like *Golett* and *Golurk* and later on *Ultra Beasts Buzzwole* and *Guzzlord* - all of this would perfectly fall in line and fit the description with most of if not all the pokemon designs of this generation - My absolute favorite designs from this generation are the frankenstein fossil pokemon with their mismatched body parts because of the ridiculous and fascinating concept behind them
JUSTICE FOR RATICATE
Since we are bound to get SwSh 2 or whatever, I'm hoping they add the matching fronts and backs, so you can get the true species and be able to breed them, perhaps the true species of the bird is Aerozolt, plus imagine a Stegosaurus mermaid
Could not agree more
You kinda make me appreciate the designs more but i am still not a big fan of some designs like stonjourner, polteageist and the fossils. As a guy who loves dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures, the designs could have been a bit more creative instead of just pasting a top half of an incomplete design with a random bottom half.
Whoah... that’s a lot of text
Honestly, (actual) Eternatus looks more like a Digimon than a Pokemon to me.
But seriously, it's a copy of Xemnas's dragon form from kingdom hearts! It even has eternal in it's name, that's what the guy spoke about all the time.
Yeah, like what the heck pokemon!
People who say this "Pokemon looks like a Digimon" shit has probably have never seen a good amount of Digimon designs before. The only remotely "digimon" looking pokemon is zeraora but that's pretty much it.
Then it looks Digimon to you then
Bruh it looks like something out of some sci-fi Dark Souls shit
7:00 Dragapult looks like a cooler Salamence, maybe even a replacement Shelgon
to me it looks like druddigon, red head with dark green body
I liked the designs but the last one, idk it just became too much "mewtree" and too little dark creature/dragon
TBH I would love to see this done with every pokemon.
And also for gen 1 pokemon what they would look like if they were designed for pokemon Sword and Shield.
That One Sentient Bagel ikkkk need them all
Yes agreed! There’s something about the gen 1-2 style I enjoy.
I really love the old school artwork of ken sugamori. Imo pokemon lost its touch after 💎 and pearl
Honestly if Grimmsnarl has that design in game it would be my all time fave
Same! I'm not a huge fan of the original design
Same
Same it would pretty much get my blastoise spot aka favourite of all time
This is so cool! I would love to see a "Gen 1 Redesigned as Gen 8" counterpart! Keep up the great work!
Awesome video! Can you do the opposite too? Gen 1 Pokemon in the more abstract Gen 8 style?
There's one vid almost like that but its in gen 7 you should check it out if it helps.
These retro-styled redesigns are great. Dragapult is one of my faves too, I really liked seeing the simplified re-rendering of it in Gen 1 style.
"No one would have imagined Eternus back in Gen 1"
Am I the only one old enough to remember the really, really old PokeGod urban legend Doomsday? It reminds me a lot of Eternus!
I don’t agree that anthropomorphic design is synonym of power in Gen 1. Take Aerodactyl or Gyarados for example. I think Eternatus could be a mixture of both
The Grimsnarl and Eternatus redesigns were my favorite.
While i like the Redesigned eternatus, i feel like it’s more Mewtwo than eternatus at this point.
Definitely. Disappointing, to be honest.
Pretty much
Ok this video was amazing, thank you for taking the time to post it. Now I understand why I love gen 1 so much more.
I really dug all of these redesigns. They all look like they were pulled right out of 1995 concept art!
The Mewtwo looks like Darkrai from gen 4 but if it was made in Ken Sugimori's art style from Pokémon Crystal (Gen 2). Beautiful.
All good redesaings. But the legendary could have more snake-like form (no legs and longer tale) or more skeletal look with like ribs and mayde skull-like head. Keep up the good work!
Litmeel Yes to this, I think another good influence from Gen 1 would’ve been Kabutops, which has the skuttley legs without losing the bipedal “intelligent lifeform” vibe Mewtwo has
I think it just looks like mewthree
I absolutely love every single one of these retro redesigns. I want a retro looking dragapult in my team so much!
The water color renderings alone give me so much nostalgia. Ken Sugimori ftw
Dragapult looks like Salamence in the redesign
My word what paint brush did you use and in what app?! They look amazing!
micky busbus I used procreate on the iPad! And used the watercolor brush!
Subjectively looks so accurate really good job!
Really cool video! Love the concept and great drawing!
Please do more of these! It's short, really well thought out and interesting. I see you've put a lot of effort and this is really good art! Keep it up!
Bruh 9:57 just pad it out to 10 so u can have more ads like just stay on the pics of are I second longer each and it would have been 10 min
Tim Hanselbach they deserve ad revenue for this amount of work. It might seem cynical but that’s the world we live in, and stretching it out wouldn’t make me think less of him
Tim Hanselbach yeah and besides there wouldn’t be a massive change just like 1 second longer on each image or have the outro be a second longer.
He doesn't have to. I mean he has about 3 ads in the video which is enough for a almost 10 minute video, but ok
I really love this concept and would LOVE to see more of it.
Another, another!
This was really good! The analysis of why the designs feel so different now is spot on and I think the approach of being heavily inspired by specific pokemon for these redesigns worked really well.
Wow. Love how you reimagined them all! Such a treat to find it 3 years later too. Your choice of music was a really nice touch too!
Could you speak about how would look like the Sinnoh forms if Diamond & Pearl get finally remastered for Switch the next year?
I think if they keep regional forms (they are pretty popular, i mean so were megas but only so many models can fit sadly) i think that they would only apply to newer games not remakes but if they do it with remakes i think it would only apply to pokemon released after that gen
Please no, not another half assed remake.
@@Melkac hey, ORAS was amazing. Let's Go are spin-offs and don't count.
@@cybersilver5816 You are right, just the fact that you can catch Deoxys makes them good remakes
@@francescopastena1841 not just that, the flying on mega latios or latias is really cool too.
I’m probably in the minority, but I actually really loved the ink and watercolour art from the 90’s gen 1 and 2. I looked at that art as a kid way back when it first came out and found it captivating.
Lots of people seem to hate it now, but back when there was only 150 Pokémon (not Mew, we didn’t even know about that!), we would try to draw and design our own Pokémon. I think that’s because the rougher ink and watercolour designs inspired kids to try and copy it.
So I’m not surprised that I actually prefer your gen 1 and 2 style renders of these Pokémon. I can’t see kids trying to redraw some of these ultra beasts or gen 8 designs, but the retro style redesigns... maybe! Just maybe.
I totally agree!
Sadly, people nowadays hate Kanto cuz of the overexposure (mostly because majority of today's pokefans grew up with or a fan of gen 4 and 5 and want their gens to get love).
@@adityam4263 it had changed beyond recognition by then. Pokémon was on it’s most famous high point from 1998 to about 2001. By the time gen 4 came out, most of those fans had moved on and the ones that stayed were struggling to see it in the same way. I vividly remember arguing with a family friend’s kid in about 2007 over the differences in generations. His argument for Gen 4 being better was that it’s better because NEW, which is dumb. Those kids don’t have the same attachment to Gen 1 and 2 because they just weren’t there. They missed the phenomenal craze era and rode on a second, lesser peak after 2007. I cannot stress how massive Pokémon was in the 90’s, especially to the ones that weren’t there. It was in every shop, every window, everyone had cards, people were hooking up gameboys in the street to trade, it was being talked about in newspapers and on the radio… it was next level. The power of nostalgia for that time is something that kids from later generations won’t ever understand.
I’m no genwunner, but honestly, you had to be there. It’s not even come remotely close to being on that level since. That’s why Gen 1 is so overexposed. To most people, that’s the difference between someone going “Oh, that’s Slowbro!” and then just saying “Is that a new one? Nahh, I prefer Slowbro.” because they remember that, even in their 30’s they remember Slowbro.
By about 2001, most fans were pushing teenage years and they stepped away from Pokémon. But they never forgot that time of phenomenon. Gen 1 gets exposure to bring them back, Game Freak wishes they could recapture the heights of the late 90’s again.
This channel is absolutely my favorite channel to watch. The creativity in these videos are amazing and ive learned alot about design, im not an artist myself im a writer but its still interesting to see design concepts dissected.
My favorite pokémon video from your channel so far! The designs, the analysis, I love everything!! Fantastic!!!
Really love the watercolor finish! I kinda hope that someday Gamefreak will take the time and effort to implement the art style into a Pokémon game in the future (and implement it well).
I really like how this video showcases the charm of Gen 1. Simple yet distinctive designs (with easily identifiable profiles), two primary color palette, and a more natural world and mythological inspirations. While I can appreciate how Pokemon has tried to make new pokemon more complex as computer technology evolves, I think they've lost the charm that had made the franchise popular.
What I like in the first few gens of pokemon is how the majority of pokemon look like monsters made for battle and how their pokedex puctures make it look like they were snapped in the wild. Whereas in the newer gens it feels like they've gone for a more plushie feel/look for the majority of pokemon and their pokedex pictures now look they're modelling for the camera.
@@keaganhunter5365 That was pretty much the point, Pokémon stands for pocket monsters, the creatures were supposed to be like the monsters of any JRPG of those ages, living in a "normal" world with people and animals (while we actually don't see animals, gen 1 has some mentions of them on some dex entries)
The change point was when Gamefreak decided to completely erase other creatures of their franchise's world, and make the Pokémon actually be the main part of that world's ecosystem, now we have the Aether Foundation doing conservative works to save Alola's Corsola population from their main predator Toxapex.
And I don't think that's wrong at all, its actually pretty cool and original, but that's the difference, maybe now they are more "Pokémon" instead of "pocket monsters".
@@Dexuz wow, thanks for the reply, very informative. As you could probably tell from my comment I haven't played the newer games, the last gen I played was 4 (although the latest release games I played was heart gold and soul silver, but you get my point). I've been considering getting back into pokemon and through my "research" of later games, what I mentioned is something that really stuck out to me.
@@keaganhunter5365 and your telling me Charmander doesn't look like a plushie or piplup and stuff. Y'all genwunners will find any reason to hate on newer gen pokemon
@@Revsoshi if they didn't look like trash then people wouldn't hate on it
I loved these and I wouldn't mind seeing more! You have such a good grasp on pokemon design process and the results were really believable.
Amazing video, you should definitely do more of these
Grimmsnarl’s Gen 1 redesign actually looked better than its current one to me.
Yeah true, looks cool if you ask me
yes
I agree gen 8 really was hit with the ugly stick the limbs are way to thin and cartoonish
The Gen 1 Grimmsnarl looks amazing!
I love how this channel has really changed my perspective of Pokémon designs. And really shown me how all Pokémon designs are just subjective. It really shows how Pokémon designs are just pieces of artwork, and how’s its just truly up to opinion and perspective
I love how you used music from gen 4 while drawing and giving out your opinions
This was a really cool video! You should do more of it! Maybe with other gens?
I actually do like intelleon. I'm not angry you don't like him our trying to convince you to change your opinion, I'm guest sharing my opinion.
I think the anime will do Intelleon justice. Because he's got a personality you can't physically see in game. Imagining his personality makes it so much more fun to have him on the team
I like Intelleon more than the grass started
Apex predator I have a love/hate relationship with Intelleon. I was super disappointed when I evolved mine because I thought it looked weird. It’s almost in an uncanny valley area for me with its rounded body, large hands, and limbs that are WAY too long and thin. At the same time, though, I can’t deny there’s something cool about it. The way it points it’s finger guns, the way it crouches before it attacks, the way it’s translucent black eyelid folds down...that’s pretty badass. This is an odd comparison, but I’d liken it to a Spy Vs Spy style of spy character rather than a James Bond one. It’s weird and wacky, but there’s definitely a bit of cool charm to it that is to be appreciated.
@@morgangobin9985 I think intelleon is not a bad pokemon. It's just that it shouldn't have been the final form of sobble.
Morgan Gobin I mean it’s like an assassin or a lawyer like Pokémon ( I forgot which )
I honestly think you did a fantastic job with all 3 of these designs. As others are saying, it would be really cool to see more videos like this!
You really upped your game getting into the origins on the designs good job now a subscriber
Grimmsnarl is amazing, and would have definitely been one of my favourites had it existed in Gen I.
man, i cant even imagine eternatus in gen 1. so your design is pretty wonderful imo! its such a non-pokemon pokemon.
Bruh. Petition to see more videos of you drawing new Pokémon in Gen 1/2's art style! I could watch this for hours. It's calming.
Amazing work! Should definitely become a series.
Controversial opinion: I really like the evolution of the art style over time
Cryo 329 not controversial at all. Many people will bash you for liking first/ second gen designs
person person the designs
MORE OF THESE PLEASE they are amazing!!!!!!!!
Do more of these! This was awesome!
This is amazing, you are very talented!
These aren't even Gen 8 pokemon redesigned like Gen 1, these are just mashups of Gen 1 and Gen 8 pokemon. The last one here is just Sharp Mewtwo.
The simplistic designs of the first 3 gens are unrivaled lol
Finally a gen 1 conversion video made by someone who actually understands the reasoning behind the designs
Make this a series
I like all of your designs in this video more than the originals. Great work :)
if i was designing reto eternatus i'd definietly take my inspiration from classical euopean dragons. In particular the dragon on the welsh flag or st georges dragon, you could toss in some eastern dragon, give it a long body to curl in on itself to save on sprite space and just suggest legs
I could sit and watch this stuff all day
I'm glad someone made a video comparing the old artwork. It's nice to notice how far we have come in terms of Pokemon game freak art.
Dude I can't fathom how good you are at this, a few days ago I saw someone share an article with your Pokémon armours. I followed thinking maybe you'd have commissions open, but I'm glad I went down the rabbit hole and found this channel through your Twitter and am now going back through all these great videos
I lowkey prefer this Grimmsnarl more than the original
9:14 not bad but considering it's apocalyptic nature perhaps darker collour and bigger spikes for the darklord/doombringer feeling. I think that's what they would have gone for.
you are so talented. watched a few of your videos and subscribed, I was shocked you didn't have millions of subs already! your channels definitely gonna blow up. wish i was as creative as you!
Wow... I love this so much. I would love to see more videos on this concept!
I think the red ear thing you were trying to go for with Eternatus could've work but I understand for the sake of simplicity in the style and coloring, it wouldnt fit
Woah I loved these! I miss watercolor Pokémon :(
I’ll say, even though I have a lot of problems with the new games, I absolutely adore some of the new designs. Great video man !
Love the content. I think the same concept in reverse would be really interesting too - drawing Gen 1 Pokémon with Gen 8 designs.
8:28 so basically mewtwo but pointy.
Two cool ideas for you all to do.
1. Discuss the designs of the flagship monsters of the Monster Hunter series.
2. Turning Monster Hunter Monsters into Pokemon.
Just something for your brains to dwell on.
"The kaiju Baragon"
I UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE
Your guys' redesigns in all these are very clever and creative, taking the design philosophies of earlier eras and imposing their limitations on it. Love it. It makes the redesign more "objective" in a weird way, keeping in mind the design would have to be made into pixel art. Cool cool cool.
Nobody:
Subjectively: 1 in 3 Pokemon designs in gen 1 had pointy ears.
I would love to see the fossils reimagined in the gen one style. That would be amazing cause their my favorite new pokemon in sword and shield
Incredible work! If pokemon still looked like your ideas, I would have never left!
Wow one of the coolest vids i've seen. You should do more!
Can we get a “What gen 1 Pokémon would look like designed in gen 8?”
It's amazing how well you emulated Sugimori's style!
And I would love to show this to anyone who whines that new Pokemon designs just don't look like Pokemon. This gives a really clear image of how the general style of Pokemon has changed over the years, and that one style is not better than the other.
im just blown away by your drawings/art
These are some of the most well thought-out and executed gen1 style redesigns I've seen (maybe with the exception of Eternatus- but its hard to translate that and the design you ended up with is still cool anyway). would love to see more
You should try to do the reverse with making gen 1 Pokémon into more modern designs
I think giving eternatus red claws in the retro design would stop them from getting lost in the body, also maybe some sort of window in the chest to show more red energy
i prefer your drawing of grimmsnarl waaaay more than it's actual design amazing work dude!
These all look so good ! I had to subscribe
0:26 thats actually my wallpaper ;D
Why does everyone hate Intelleon, is the best gen 8 starter.
Like, is a Secret agent Chameleon, what's cooler than that?
Is the most creative out of the three
I saw the thumbnail before the title and during a second i Wondered if it was a video which say than we have a picture which can let think than Sobble was already prototyped in early generations. So good job ! it was all because of your convincing redesign !
This was a really cool video. Can you do this for the rest of gen 8's pokemon evolutions? I'd love to see how you'd draw sobble's line ^.^
7:21 reminds me of blastoise
Inteleon and I are coming to beat you up Jack, watch your back. Nah but seriously these are great. Id say Eternatus was my favourite, turned out very nice👌.
Inteleon is actually one of my favorites, might just be sobble bias
Man, I love the gen 1 artstyle and colors you used
It's unfortunate that i'm only just now stumbling upon this video, but that being said..
I'd like to thank you for making it, and for honing your skills as a creator in the first place to be able to create a video like this.
It isn't everyday that someone puts their own twist on Pokémon themed videos like this. You've managed to blend generations together with your own vision on why things look the way they do (in theory) and I love it.
For what it's worth, you've made a long time Pokémon fan happy with the quality of your content 😌 Thank you
