Stephon Castle: WELCOME TO THE SPURS | 2024 NBA Draft Scouting Report

  • Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
  • In winning the national championship this year with UConn, Stephon Castle showed that he has the ability to provide a major supporting role in an elite system. Providing great value as an offensive connector at the 2 guard position and defender for a powerhouse squad that had so much talent that it was hard to stand out. Castle doesn’t want to be seen as just a role playing 2 though, recently stating “I feel like my true position is a point guard, I feel like the past couple of months, I had to sacrifice for the better of our team. It worked out for us, so it's not anything to harp on or be bitter about.". Castle has made it clear by these statements he isn’t content being a peripheral piece in the NBA, he wants to be the guy running things. With reports surfacing that he will refuse working out with teams who have an established point guard. The question is, does he have the ability to actually do that? Or is he an overly ambitious young player who needs to accept where he truly fits is as a shooting guard or small forward as a supporting piece? Today, we discuss the pros and the cons of Castle’s game, and see if he truly is a top tier prospect at his desired position.

    At 19 years old…he is years before his time in a few different ways. It was no surprise he went top 5. As a UConn fan, this kid was defensive machine and hustler…really incredible in his role. Excited to see what his role will be in the NBA

    Jimmy Butler… same height, not an elite shooter, lockdown defender, great finisher, leader, team first, ultra competitive… Much like Jimmy, Stephon Castle plays the game with an inherent situational awareness. This is evident in his ability to catch defenders off guard, often times creating contact that results in a foul call or an easy pass to a wide open teammate. The foot work in the paint is very good, along with the ability to spin into positive space. If Castle lands on a team with a coaching staff to nurture his strengths and improve on his weaknesses, he will be a star.
    Ps I do not think he is a point guard, doesn’t mean he can’t play PG at a high level. I think he would find more success at SG.

  • @jcemmanueljacutin3012
    @jcemmanueljacutin3012 3 місяці тому +16

    i feel like he's going to be a Jrue Holiday type in the Pro's. Jrue is not an elite point gaurd but, he has the skill set to be an effective one he plays the game the right way and is more effective as a PG when he has perimeter players making the plays and working off of them as a secondary playmaker although still being the " lead gaurd" position. Spurs decent perimeter playmakers like Vassel and hopefully Sochan takes a leap. Wemby is also gonna have the ball a lot so having a ball dominant PG will be counter intuitive. Castle just needs to focus on building his shot.

Castle looks to be a great defender yes, but he hasnt shown any flashes of being a good shot/advantage creator to the level i've seen in Dilingham, and he doesnt pop as an athlete to me, and our spacing will suffer even worse than it did last year. Either way this draft is just terrible all around for prospects that actually solve a majority of our issues. I did think Rob Dillingham could've been the answer, especially knowing that he's offensive minded which is what I think is necessary. he often smothers the ball when going for a shot. that will cause so many variables, but it's something easily fixed. simple drills of just catching the ball clean and going straight up will help his % numbers a lot. Considering the spurs offense that's like a first thing I imagine him getting taught. the spurs started as a bottom 3pt shooting team in the nba but for the most part after the all star break were the best.

  • @gallici-anima-christiana
    @gallici-anima-christiana 2 місяці тому

    The more I see of him play and the more he reminds me of Davion Mitchell, just bigger and taller. He's probably underrated offensively, he's very good at drawing fouls and he should get to the line more in the NBA, with improved handles and a better use of his speed he'll be able to create more space and should be a much improved finisher. With more free throws attempts a night and with enough 3pt reps in games consistently I have no doubt that he'll knock down over 30% of them very early, he shot 72% during the the 3pt shooting star drill during the combine and that was one of the reasons for the Spurs drafting him. Gregg Popovich will tell him to let it fly whenever he's open and his teammates will also encourage him to shoot it, we've seen the shooting improvements when Spurs players had the green light. He was also a much improved shooter during the tournament, had other flashes during the season, without the knee injury and if asked to shoot more you can only wonder where his shot could have gotten. Most of his performances also came in the second part of the season, his stats don't tell the full sotry.
    He looked very mature on the court and he didn't look like a freshman when he was handling the ball and directing the offense, he was a calming presence for Uconn when he was either running plays or making something out of what could have been a bad possession if he didn't have the ball. Always aware of the clock, of the game situation which is rare for a player of his age, sees mismatches and knows where to get the ball.
    He had some spot up contested and almost sped up jumpers that looked clean, all net and that will translate well in the nba, when he's in rythm and confident he looks like a guy that you don't want to leave open, there's also much to like about the floater and about how he gets to his spots. Most of his issues offensively came from an hesitation to take shots, even in the midrange he wasn't encouraged to expend anything there or to get many attemps, Uconn shot very few midrange jumpers and that wasn't part of their philosophy.
    I have no issue seeing him as a threat from anywhere on the court in the NBA, in two to three years if he becomes more agressive. When he's looking to score you can feel that he can take over games.

    I think a better comp would be along the lines of SGA or Morant without the freakish athleticism. Shai and Morant could barely shoot from outside the point until their 3rd years in NBA and I see Castle following their footsteps. He already got the ability to drive to the basket, the floater and mid-range shot, he just needs to work on his 3-point shot. Already he seems to possess that competitive spirit and desire to get better so he can be the one to make the F@@k You play. To me those attributes go a long way to determine how good a lottery player is going to be more than any one skillset. As a Wizards fan, I want him taken at #2.

    This guy is starting to give me DeJounte Murray vibes which I hated on my Spurs. Castle is just not a natural PG so I would not want him on my Spurs for that reason. I’d much rather take Tidjane Salaun or Ron Holland at 8.

      If not for his attitude, I'd love to have Murray back on the Spurs right now! I'll take Castle.

      @@Jeremiah17seven See that’s just it it’s not only his playing style that remind me of Murray. The fact that Castle is letting it be known that he only wants to play point guard and won’t workout out with any teams that already have a point guard is also giving me full blown Murray Diva vibes.

      I think that if you can guarantee a Dejounte Murray without the attitude you’re looking at a top 3 pick at least, but there’s no guarantee he ever becomes that dynamic of an offensive player, or that he’ll avoid attitude issues. Almost every lottery prospect has some degree of risk this year

    I wanted Topic solely based on his ability to be a floor general. I was thinking he could be a Steve Nash type player, and I'm very frustrated OKC ended up with him. Castle is solid though, and I'm glad we didn't keep Dillingham. I really thought grabbing a big shooter like Knecht was our best play at 8 though.

      I thought Topic would be the pick for SA until the ACL injury. Castle made more sense after that.
