  • During a busy 2020 hurricane season, Tropical Storm Eta was easily forgotten in Florida. But the people of Tampa Bay would be well-served to remember it.
Hitting at a high tide, the storm was a preview of the way sea level rise will make floods more devastating.
To understand what that means for our region’s future, the Tampa Bay Times worked with the National Hurricane Center to model Eta as it hit, and then again with potential sea level rise by the year 2050. The agency had never before used its technology like this for a media organization.

Sea level rise around Tampa Bay will make even weak storms more destructive. The Tampa Bay Times, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with the National Hurricane Center, sought to measure how much. The results are daunting. Read part 1 of the series: tampabay.com/risingthreat

This was a minimal hurricane as it passed by Tampa.

It is a shame that County and City Commissioners continue to allow developers to build high density housing in low lying high risk coastal areas (Oldsmar, Tarpon Springs, St. Petersburg, etc.) at taxpayers expense.
