OMG! I only heard this song once or twice back when it first came out. I don't even want to imagine how long ago that was. So, I clicked on this, not knowing what to expect. Can someone feel shattered by joy?
I'd say it's the best keyboards-driven (which I tend not to like much) rock song ever, and I also prefer punk to classic rock. It's a thoroughly amazing track.
A true treasure!! It's places like this that keep these songs alive. Was played a lot over the years on WLAV in Grand Rapids, MI. Another station like all those around the country that was forced with change. SUCKS!!!!
This song never gets old. Sounds as good today as when I used to play it back in my disc jockey days in the early-to-mid-70s. Hats off to Andy for such great music, and hats off to the person who had the good taste to post such an amazing song.
We saw Andy do a live show in City Hall Plaza in 1975, a townie giving back - "Avenging Annie" just burned the the house down. Haven't thought of the song - much less heard it - in decades (in "Velvet Goldmine"...) but just a few minutes ago, playing around in F, hitting a descending Eb-Bb-F progression (Incident on 57 Street) on the keyboard, I found myself playing Andy...and needed - NEEDED - to hear it. Thanks so much for posting, stlblair!
The bass guitar on this song had to be a Rickenbacker. The bass is the secret weapon in this song; melodic, rhythmic and powerful, it syncs perfectly with the drums to push the song into the stratosphere.
Steve Blomerth This is arguably the best Bassist ever. Tony Levin. Good ear. The bass track is possibly the best one ever recorded in the history of rock music. So unsung!
AHHHH! Thanks for clearing that up for me! Someone had told me it was Mr. Levin a long time ago and I had no reason to question it. It was a very unconventional bass line; something Tony Levin may have played. While I have you on the phone... I am from Cleveland, OH. Have you considered doing a show in Cleveland? Avenging Annie was big here. It still gets airplay once in a blue moon. I think you would draw a big crowd here.
Andy, I am just 55 myself and remember having loved this song for just about all of my music loving life. Brilliant, and thank you so much. I just watched you do this song on a radio show and was just amazed again. Please come to St Louis. God bless
Wow! Just heard a piece of this at the end of Loudermilk, took me a while to find it. What a great song, performance, singing, piano, it's all fantastic and now I have it stuck in my head, joyously. Thank you, Andy!
Being a KSHE listener from the, you can imagine my surprise when this guy shows up an open mic in New Hampshire while I'm on vacation. Andy is so fun! Super nice guy.
Great Bass sound, Mr. Pratt. It has the punch of a Rickenbackker, and the musicality I would have associated with Chris Squire or other progressive rock bass virtuoso. It caught my ears as a kid and it is still impressive decades later.
@Jgeneraledger23 Gone just about 8 or 9 months now. A real shame and end of a legend and a Boston staple for well over 40 yrs. Listened to them from the very first night of the "rock format" change over--1968. They used to broadcast nights live from the Boston Tea Party on Landsdown St. and Peter Wolf was live DJ from there. Mississippi Fats and the King Biscuit Flower Hour, Dwayne Glasscock, Charles Laquadara, etc. Good times--good times--great station--GREAT MUSIC----ALL gone. PEACE
@Jgeneraledger23 WBCN went back further than WCOZ from a "rock" standpoint---1968. I remember ALL of it like yesterday and it was 40+ yrs. I'm 60 and from BeanTown area--now in Fl. 26 yrs. PEACE
I wish WLAV-FM would return to its roots! But I'm dreamin'! To return to when "Progressive Rock" was,"The Music"! To go back to the days when the"DJ" Controlled The Music, and it was his(or hers) show! I loved WLAV-FM back then... signed, A fellow listener from Grand Rapids, MI. !!
You may be right Felix. All music is about hearing the part in your head before finding it under your fingers. This song let him find that part and it is a little gem.
check out Gram Parsons "widow maker"(you tube) a month or so ago. I felt like I got hit in the head with a rock when I heard 'bcn was no more ! I grew up with Daryl Martini "The Cosmic Muffin", Carlos the Computer, And who can ever forget The King Biscuit Flower Hour ??? Or Charles Laquidera ? WBCN (R.I.P.) introduced a shitload of us Bostonians to our first taste of REAL music, and serious underground rock when all the other FM stations were busy with Top 40 garbage! R.I.P 'BCN R.I.P. "Bandit"
@Jgeneraledger23 YES it did get a fair amount of airplay in BeanTown---remember it well myself and all TOOOO long ago! Strange it got more airplay in Boston than just about anyplace else. I think I remember it being played on WCOZ and WAAF and less on WBCN. Also was popular on some AM stations. All those "great" FM stations gone forever along with all the good times and great music of the era-----PEACE.
Is "Avenging Annie" available in sheet music? I could possibly learn though it'd take me forever since my technique and finger dexterity is pretty bad ):
What the hell am I gonna do when I get back to Mass w/out 'BCN ? I'm to f#%kin' old to stick one of them I-Pod things in my ear, I still like my music to come out of a speaker from a good FM station. Why do people have to screw with all the good things, is nothin' sacred or safe anymore ? Good-bye to the end of an era, DAMN FUCKIN' SHAME (sorry ;bout the cuss)
@rustribbonwizz : Sadly this doesn't surprise me, especially since I read what shifted into its place. People want Adult Contemporary and they seem to want more Talk (in this case sports talk) so in the Boston radio market (and in the Northeast in general) something had to move to make more space, and the progressive 'BCN was it. :(
Someone help! My favorite person with K-SHE Klassics, Curt / Termite58..I just found out...has been terminated from UA-cam. My heart is broken. He posted some of the rarest music in it's entirety. If anyone knows where he may have resurfaced, please send me a personal message! I was going to ask him about finding a certain song and *poof* Thanks!
I grew up in the 70's and this reminded me of Elton John. Too bad he didn't have a Bernie Taupin to lean on. ...This had nothing to do with sexuality, just like Elton John. It was about great melodies and harmonies. The music. The lyrics could have been scrambled eggs.
some songs should be classics,,,,i hope this gets re discovered!
OMG! I only heard this song once or twice back when it first came out. I don't even want to imagine how long ago that was. So, I clicked on this, not knowing what to expect. Can someone feel shattered by joy?
Me and my buddy Scott used to sit on the levee in downtown Saint Louis and smoke numerous doobies while listening to this.Good guy, great times.
Great, great song. I'll never understand how it didn't become a classic rock staple.
I'd say it's the best keyboards-driven (which I tend not to like much) rock song ever, and I also prefer punk to classic rock. It's a thoroughly amazing track.
I never get tired of your music, Andy! This is a classic!! Can't wait to hear you out on open mic again 😊
This is a bold piece of music. I had the LP.
A true treasure!! It's places like this that keep these songs alive. Was played a lot over the years on WLAV in Grand Rapids, MI. Another station like all those around the country that was forced with change. SUCKS!!!!
thanks, blessings
Andy Pratt
Great production & mix!
Gosh, I love this bass line.
This song never gets old. Sounds as good today as when I used to play it back in my disc jockey days in the early-to-mid-70s. Hats off to Andy for such great music, and hats off to the person who had the good taste to post such an amazing song.
Donna Halper can i help her...
Lol hott Donna....
One of my favourites! My mom used to play it a lot when I was a kid and I sort of fell in love with it again in my 20's!
I used to own the 45 of this!! I wore it out as a kid. Thankx for posting one of the greatest songs ever. I'm sharing it for sure.
We saw Andy do a live show in City Hall Plaza in 1975, a townie giving back - "Avenging Annie" just burned the the house down. Excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!! Another KSHE classic.
Doesn't get "annie" better than this!!!
WOW. Haven't heard this for half a lifetime. Great song. Thank you so much for making this available.
Wow! Who knew? Who knew Michael Bolton is Andy Pratt? Love ya, Andy!
Psyched beyond words to come upon this song after all these years. SO PSYCHED!!
I saw him do this song at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA.....piano, drums, and TWO BASS PLAYERS! totally awesome
The bass guitar on this song had to be a Rickenbacker. The bass is the secret weapon in this song; melodic, rhythmic and powerful, it syncs perfectly with the drums to push the song into the stratosphere.

Steve Blomerth with flats too
+Steve Blomerth it was me on a Fender Precision I think, 3 bass tracks, 1973, thanks for the compliments, glad you like it
+FelixRueDeGuerre it was me Andy P. I did 3 records with Tony, who is/was great of course, this was pre-that
It does bring back memories, great song.

Motherfrack! I had forgotten about this incredible song!
Wow! Just heard a piece of this at the end of Loudermilk, took me a while to find it. What a great song, performance, singing, piano, it's all fantastic and now I have it stuck in my head, joyously. Thank you, Andy!
Sure brings back some great memories..Thanks for uploading.:)
One of my favorite songs! Hard to find! Thanks Andy!
Being a KSHE listener from the, you can imagine my surprise when this guy shows up an open mic in New Hampshire while I'm on vacation. Andy is so fun! Super nice guy.
Another great from the "hippy" generation; I had the original 33-1\3...listen to this after you partake...
Great Bass sound, Mr. Pratt. It has the punch of a Rickenbackker, and the musicality I would have associated with Chris Squire or other progressive rock bass virtuoso. It caught my ears as a kid and it is still impressive decades later.
You can thank API eq and 1176 compressor and of course Andy's persistence. I was a witness.

KSHE Klassic in St Louis
One of my favorites....happy I still have the vinyl for this.
Sorry to hear about 'BCN...
My mom used to have this playing when I would come home from school... she'd play old vinyls while she cleaned :)
Boston boy, right? Dynamite song, really talented. Have always loved this song; damn he's good!!!! ,,,,,,,😎.
I wish WLAV-FM would return to its roots! But I'm dreamin'! To return to when

It all starts with Woody Guthrie. These albums were all supposed to be released but Columbia dropped the ball. Pratt was our tallest rock star.
thanks, people

I remember hearing this song on the radio a loooong time ago; how well did it do on the charts? It got a decent amount of airplay in the Boston area.
Kool song!!
only 23,516-should be 23 millon hits-great song-4 sure
A great old song. The only hit for Pratt unfortunately, he had so much potential. Ah, yes, the music BUSINESS!
@Jgeneraledger23 YES it did get a fair amount of airplay in BeanTown---remember it well myself and all TOOOO long ago! Strange it got more airplay in Boston than just about anyplace else. It was played on 1480 WSAR in Fall River. I was about 12 years old :)
"Just like your woman loves you."
This is from Velvet Goldmine-GREAT GREAT MOVIE!! :)
A truly great song. Even though it was a one hit wonder for Andy Pratt.
Definitely a lost classic , It's a real shame that the radio stations today put great music like this by the wayside
I'm hearing touces of Arif Martin production on the track.
I'm hearing touches of Arif Mardin production on the track.
@recordsare And thank you for being a genius.
Andy Pratt and Andy Paley should work togetherNOW...
@indy00kat It's great. So much of his stuff is. Maybe Gretchen Wilson could do it. It's got too many sections to be a hit though
I met this guy at a tennis court
@rustribbonwizz Wow COZ, that's going waay back :)
Is "Avenging Annie" available in sheet music? I could possibly learn though it'd take me forever since my technique and finger dexterity is pretty bad ):

.and of course vocals.
Most lucid lullaby ever written....
I liked hearing this, but the Roger Daltrey version kicks this one all around...

a kshe classic that never gets old
Only Chuck Nolen could do this better!
