Venting African Cichlids - Most accurate way to determine Fish Male and Female Difference

  • The difference between male and female African Cichlids can be difficult to tell with some fish. Usually their colors, spots, and fins on the body can help. But the most accurate way is by venting African Cichlids. In this video, I'll show you how to tell Fish Male and Female Difference to determine whether you have males or female fish and be 100% sure of it.
    Male African Cichlids, especially most Peacocks and Haps usually show a lot of color. This is to show their dominance and attract the females. While most females in the species are washed out and colorless. But this is not true with Mbuna, some Mbuna females do show color as well.
    Male Cichlids will also have a pointed anal fin while females will be a bit more rounded. Males will have egg spots on their anal fin as well to attract females. Most females don't have these spots but some do.
    Even though all of these methods can help determine the sex of your African Cichlids, as you can see they may be misleading. The 100% accurate way to know for sure is by venting African Cichlids.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 роки тому

      Thanks, glad you're enjoying them. Its very hard to identify the differences unless you just know what species it is. Haps are usually bigger than peackocks, but not always. Peacocks and Haps are bigger than mbuna and mbuna look more slender and longer while Pand H's can be taller and thicker...but none of these are solid ways to tell.
      Try this app called "the fish companion" Its a bit outdated but has plenty of fish with their species name and genus.

    Hey Kev, Great videos. I came here looking for solutions to my cloudy algae infested tank. Thanks to your videos and the information you've provided, my tank looks perfect. I'll start off by saying thank you for everything you've posted. You've now become my go to guy! Anyways, I have a question. I recently picked up 10 baby peacoks for my tank, roughly 0.5" - 1" in size. None had colours. I know its too difficult to determine the sex of the fish while so young but it's been a month and some are already getting their colours. I've been feeding them 'New Life Spectrum's Grow' since I've had them to help get them a bit bigger faster. Now my question is, is it okay to have both females and males in the tank at the same time as juveniles until I can determine their sexes or will they start getting more aggressive as they age? I want to remove the females as soon as I can. Thanks man! :)

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому +2

      Awesome to hear how the channel has helped you out! Appreciate the feedback 😁 Yes its ok for them to be together as juveniles. The ones that are already beginning to show color are most likely males, and they're showing color because of the females in the tank. But yes you're also right they will begin to get more and more aggressive as they grow. The ones with color, chasing fish around, you can assume are the males. Begin to remove them into a separate tank while the others continue to grow. Once the dominant male is gone, another will start to show color and move into the dominant spot, and also get aggressive...repeat and continue the process till nothing but females left.

    • @Ru7hle5S
      @Ru7hle5S 2 роки тому

      @@KaveManAquatics okay so I should be moving the males out of the tank not the females?

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому

      Correct, males can look like females when submissive. Removing confirmed males is the best way to let other males color up. You’ll know when you have only females left.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому

      Generally you’d have them mixed in a grow out tank, or just something smaller than your main tank. When you confirm a male remove him and add to main tank.

      @@rakelkristinesvendsen4638 yup...that’s why breeders usually sell them “unsexed” kind of a crap shoot, you get what you get 🤷🏼‍♂️ after they grow and you want to start adding adult fish your breeders can sell you a specific sex to fit the needs of your tank.

    Will males show less colours when they're without any females?

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому +1

      Not necessarily. Most tanks are all male and fish have great color. But one male in a tank with 5 females will color up to his max!

      Lorenz I do have 1 yellow lab Mbuna, said to be one of the least aggressive Mbuna. Also I made sure he’s smaller than all the others.

    I had found out a few months ago I was sent a female OB in my "supposedly" all male peacock tank. SMH

      Sigh I’m afraid this is why there’s so much aggression in my “supposed” all male Peacock tank. Even my Mbuna tank is calmer than my Peacock tank, so I’m sure there’s a female in there.

      Brandon Young agreed, usually Peacocks are much more calmer than Mbuna...you could definitely have a culprit or 2 in there.

      So…the reason for venting is because COLOR is not an accurate indication every time. Great job listening to what was literally said in the video.

    Kev, I’ve kept cichlids for a few years. All the cichlids I have now are colorful and seem to have jeweled tails, suggesting that they are male. I’ve been looking at videos to learn how to breed. All the extra equipment and setup seemed intimidating. So, I haven’t setup any special breeding equipment but, I noticed the other day that I have a new, one inch fish in my tank. How’d that happen?

      Not to experienced with Tetras...but African Cichlids have a hierarchy in the tank, which is why being on top is so important for them. It’s all about getting the female lol
