establishing shapes and silhouettes early on can help with the composition. its like thumbnailing but directly on the piece. they start with the focus and make everything else complement it. a lot of painters will start with a rough painting and refine later on. when youre painting on a plain white background its hard to tell whether youre making something too dark or too white. he already knows that area is going to be black so he knows how dark the skin and stuff should be in relation to that.
