@@pryan5183 Hi, yes it was indeed twelve years ago, and I have listened to several of his current renditions through 2022, which included one performance in which the aria was transposed downward a 1/2 step. In all cases, including the transposition, he was under pitch. Perhaps, I am more sensitive because I have perfect pitch, but I compared it against a piano, and I am correct. He has a lot of good qualities to his voice, but he needs much work on the upper notes including the Bb.
Got to see him (twice) in Seattle Opera's recent production of Boheme. Absolutely blown away by the combination of amazing voice, physical presence on stage and acting ability. It's going to be so much fun to follow his career in years to come. I hope we get to hear him again here in Seattle.
Michael, tu es le meilleur d'entre tous. Je suis conquis par ta voix, ta présence. Tu es un artiste exceptionnel et je t'aime beaucoup. Ta voix est gravée dans mon coeur pour toujours. José
fantastic performance!i hope to hear more and more about you Michael. And people dont be judgemental about his attitude in "The Audition".Think about it,imagine if youre 22 years old with this voice and have to sing at the Met in a contest that pretty much will define your carreer.I dont know a lot of 22 year olds or a lot of people in general at that age that can pull it through like he did. After all you can hear it on his voice he is passionate and precise nothing wrong about wantin to be right
C'est celui qui se rapproche le plus du timbre et de la couleur de la voix de Pavarotti !!!! "c'est une merveille !!!! Dans l'opéra" " Poliuto il est époustouflant,!!!!
The person who mentioned Michael w.Corelli....I saw the fabulous I Lombardi..his voice is "chiaroscuro"...dark/bright..like Franco......I rarely go nuts over singers today...he (and Piotr) are special.
So happy to hear the voice developing so beautifully! I remember when you said you were not a high C tenor. So glad you were wrong about that. Keep up the good work!
And he's going to be singing Rodolfo for his premiere at the Seattle Opera. Just got tickets. Can't wait to catch this rising star! We discovered him through the Met Audition documentary and really liked the guy. Found him very compelling. His passion for the music comes through in spades. (Thank God I didn't have every word of mine recorded for two weeks when I was that age.)
I think MIchael Fabiano handles the passaggio with excellence in every way, and his voice is absolutely not open on the high notes but perfectly covered. He has a warm, gorgeous tone that I love, and I couldn't disagree more with the comment made four days before this one.
Not perfect, but very good, specially for such a young tenor. I agree with some of the comments on lack of "ping", but the high C was superb! I'm looking forward to seeing him develop into a star.
This is an excellent, intelligent performance. I like the interpretation but I must point out that the voice, for all its volume, lacks "ring". The ping in the voice is missing and at least to my ears, the voice comes across as two-dimentinal rather than the desired three- dimentinal quality. All this, inspite of and not discounting the tack on High C. He is certainly not just another tenor and I look forward to his further development as a singer and an artist.
I've heard him live and also sung with him on stage. It is full of ring. Unfortunately in this recording the orchestra is far too loud. It's hard to get a recording right with orchestra and singer.
It's not the orchestra, it's the recording of the ensemble. In general I feel that we underestimate the role the recording quality plays in the sound clips we listen to. I think a specific room and a specific recording CAN affect a perception of the 'quality' of voice.
I'm coming to this thread late - I can assure all - this is a voice that comes along once in 50 years and that is a conservative estimate. To me this wonderful young tenor invokes memories of a young Carreras, and also reminds me a bit of Carlo Bergonzi. Shlomo Hoffert's comments (the negative ones anyway) I'm sorry to say are, well, stupid. The voice is full, rich and loaded with squillo and ping. I for one, as a former singer, am grateful to be able to hear this young man's incredible gift bestowed upon us. That said, no singer is perfect, and it will be interesting to see how Mr. Fabiano matures and grows as a singer and artist. As for the armchair critics - YOU try getting up there and get through the first act of Boheme. Then I'll listen to your dopey misinformed criticisms of artists who are out there hanging their guts out for everyone to see and hear.
No modern tenor could ever be compared to Franco Corelli... His voice was unique, and he belonged to an era where opera singers were humble enough to keep studying... always... and I don't even want to stat mentioning the attitude... This young man, though good, has still a loooong way to go even before he could even consider kissing Franco Corelli's shoes...
Not a great recording, but the voice still comes through. He is a very fine tenor, and here he brings a warmth and expression that I found missing in a few other of his recordings. This is fine Rodolfo, and his future is very bright. Bravo.
This is much better when it comes to the high notes being in line with rest of the voice. This shows posting by "operbeauty" on June 24,'10, but when was the performance. I'm hopeful it was recent, as it shows much improvement vocally for Michael, if that's the case.
I like his attitude at the film. And in what I have obsereved at the film was, when he sings, I see no Michael Fabiano, tenor with a new jersey temper. All I see is the character, for example, Lensky. I hope to see him perform live someday.
This is a fine rendition. Youthful, vibrant, passionate, secure technique. He's no Bjorling, Pavarotti etc but he's not too far away. Recording a bit basic, didn't help.
I don't hear any similarity in voice between Carreras and Fabiano. If I find a similarity I will let you know-I am in an Opera Lyra production with him in this very role!
What many commented about his ego was based on what we all saw the audition. It isn´t a lie, it´s just the truth. He always had something to say to cover his insecurities. I think he has a beautiful voice and is incredibly musical, but unfortunately he pushes a lot his voice and the judges were right about the passaggio. Like many, I also think his ego is as big as the empire state building. Normal in opera singers. A beautiful voice!
hmmmm so I am reading people say Carreras, and I can agree in the middle and middle upper thye soul dis like a young Carreras, but in the high notes, he opens up a little like Corelli, not with the same power of course, but there is a timbral similarity
A beautiful voice and very musical. Unfortunately, he pushes a lot and now it functions because he´s young. Hopefully he´s still working on that or he´ll lose it when gets old. A beautiful voice.
Beautiful voice, very musical... BUT: The throat is not 100% which translates into a throathy and off-pitch singing. His voice is still uneven, the vowels aren't pure and his top is too open. He's good but he could be much better and since he is already on the road, I hope tahtnhe takes care of those problems or he won't last long.
Gorgeous voice and fabulous technique. What an uninformed opinion to say these sounds can be made without extensive (and rather great) training/technique. As a voice teacher and singer, the combination of passion combined with technique - not to mention bel canto style (rubato/glissando/legato/dynamics/on the breath singing) is rather astonishing in such a young tenor. Not sure what could possibly be generating the negativity here? Hmmm....
Fair enough. Perhaps my judgement was rather harsh. I hope he is indeed a nicer individual than the movie made him out to be, as you suggest. Apologies.
No worries, man. I've said plenty of stuff out of ignorance before, believe me! Michael's a good guy, but like every good opera singer he has an ego for sure. But, it's no bigger than anyone elses. Merry Christmas! :^)
Don't talk about my friend that way. You probably haven't even met him have you? Even if you have, I'm sure that you certainly don't know Michael well enough to pass judgement on him. The Audition was a movie. It had to sell, so the director was obviously pressed to squeeze as much drama out of it as possible. Plus, he was 22 years old at the time, so cut him some slack. And FYI, Publicly calling someone a douchebag makes YOU look like the douchebag, sir.
sounds very similar young carreras, beautiful sound, but not enough attention to cover imo and will suffer a similar fate vocally most likely as the sound is a bit too open and there is slightly too much weight to my hearing.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 Ok. I sympathize. Caruso never sang a high C in public after age 30 or so. Not the end of the world - he knew it was too precarious to attempt. Bergonzi and other tenors avoided it and had good careers. Failed attempts do more damage than taking it down a bit.
@@jefolson6989 Of course I sympathise, it must have been awful. But Bergonzi and Caruso were not lyric tenors. They were spintos. A top lyric tenor - Fabiano is one of the top lyric tenors around atm - should be able to hit a High C.
Michael Fabiano reminds me so much of the late Franco Corelli. Excellent voice with so much velvety quality through. He will fit perfectly in the Verdi roles without a doubt. I would say he will be a great dramatic Tenor as he mature and if he stay healthy and do not rush too much into the wrong demanding role a his early age.
I did not mean any insult to the memory of such great Tenor who I did have the pleasure of meeting him in New York along with Birgit Nilsson. He was unique and magnificense although always a bit nervous and an stage afraid but always did deliver some hell of a performance!!!
Each time I hear Mr. Fabiano, I enjoy his beautiful

Thanks for your interesting and educational comments. As to the "dimentinel",
It may be attributed to poor hand-eye coordination or an errant finger.
I've heard him live and also sung with him on stage. It is full of ring. Unfortunately in this recording the orchestra is far too loud. It's hard to get a recording right with orchestra and singer.
The orchestra can drown out a singer but not the quality of his voice. Perhaps we are talking about different paremeters.
