  • Yellow Jackets trapped by the thousands with a shop vac. Using some attractant traps and dead wasps, they swarm around the intake of the wet/dry shop vac (with a few inches of water in the bottom.) We empty it out after about 4 hours. Now we can enjoy the deck this year!

    I did this about 15 years ago, with a Yellowjacket in my foundation wall. I wasn’t sure if they would find their way out of the exhaust port or not. But with water in the bottom there was no escaping. I’m sure this method of pest control would work on even exposed nests.

      They will already die when they smash against the inlet bow. The airstream in the vacuum cleaner has an amazing high speed.

    I did this with some wasps yesterday - a few inches of soapy water in the shop vac. I got a couple thousand in about 90 minutes (just left the hose positioned an inch below their entrance and left the vacuum on). Still more activity today so I'll probably get another thousand. But without getting the queen it seems like the nest will never completely die (it's inside a structure so not easy to get to), so not sure if they'll just repopulate or what.

    • @norbertfleck812
      @norbertfleck812 3 роки тому +3

      Without the workers feeding the nest, they will starve. No matter how many eggs the queen will lay.

    The vacuum trick works well, but the better way is to just attach some chicken to a board, hang it upside down over a container of water with a touch of dish soap mixed in, and they’ll come in to eat the protein and drop into the water and die. You don’t need to burn-up a shop vac either, let alone pulling power over a long extension cord and trash your motor. Plenty of UA-cam movies of the described trap in action, especially for that many yellowjackets. :-)

    Put the vacuum in place in early morning; before sunrise is best. Leave it running for several hours to catch most of the wasps then next evening place a running gasoline engine near the entrance and run the exhaust through a hose into the nest.

    Thanks, I'm going to try this. Is it just that the bucket (full of dead bees) works better than just hovering the vacuum a few inches off the ground (as in the beginning of the vid)? Seems that as long as you have the traps to attract them, both would work?

      Put some soap water into the vacuum cleaner and place the nozzle right above the nest's entrance. The switch the vacuum cleaner on.
      It's as simple as that
      Most wasps will already be dad when they smash against the inlet bow in the cleaner's bucket.
      The test will drown in the soap water.
