Hello I have a ram with 285 70 r18 nitto ridge grapplers. The calipers on my truc are big and they keep
Knocking the weights off very often. I was told that because my tire was smaller than 35” I can’t not use balancing beads. I also have an aftermarket rims 18x9. Would you recommend balancing beads in my case?
The video example was "death wobble" which typically isn't caused by improperly or out of balance tires.
for my case it was, new rotors, calipers, pads, rack and pinion, ball, joints, literally everything and steering wheel shook like a bitch. Beads are complete shit imo, they didnt work on my f250 with 37s nor the 4runner with 34s
Exactly. When my Wrangler developed "death wobble" at only 33,000 miles, the clueless Jeep dealer tried to blame it on "out-of-round" tire. (I already had the tires balanced to rule out a balance issue). I had to go find an independent shop who was experienced in it. Solution was replacing every joint in the front suspension, AND rebuilding the steering box.
@@Fjdy1jd1 Death wobble is caused by an improperly sized (or worn out) track bar 9 out of 10 times, rebuilding the whole suspension is generally not required, but if it's worn that far then it's smart to do it anyway. At 33k miles I hope they did it under warranty.
Its initiated by it. Bad bushings won't cause it without being put into motion

I had 40s balanced with golf balls. It would start to shimmy and then you'd feel them find their place. Sometimes cruising id change speed quickly and you'd feel it have to adapt. But they were old used tires on a 45 year old truck and I could run 70 with no hands on the wheel
We also recommend balance beads for tires that are 35" or larger.
@@SDWheel the guy that did it was an old friend that has a custom shop full of mall crawlers and he said well throw some golf balls in it and I bout went off when I realized he was serious but after running them I'm a believer. I never would have imagined it would work
@@lakesidemotorsports7658 I've heard tennis balls are acceptable but I've never tried it. I am currently using centramatic wheel balancer discs(same concept but shot is contained in the outer tube of the disc), and I've successfully used steel bb's in the past👍 i love simple concepts that work
I came here for pros and cons. You're title is "weights vs balance beads" but the only difference is "we prefer weights." Why do you do answer? Don't be afraid to list the cons.
The only con of using balance beads is that balance beads are not guaranteed. While we use the most exceptional and up-to-date weight charts to ensure we are installing the correct amount of beads for your specific application, there are many variables that we are unable to account for. While it is extremely rare, some wheel and tire assemblies simply do not balance out perfectly with this type of balancing technique and we are unable to confirm this until the assembly is mounted onto the vehicle.

People claim that balance beads abrasively erode inside of the tire over time, is that correct?@@SDWheel
@@klazzera I cannot see that happening because they only move at very low speed. The centrifugal force that overcomes their ability to move happens at a fairly low speed.
@@2Truth4Liberty you get up to speed, beads will settle, and with the tire deformation caused by the roll, the bulk of the beads will deform. deforming bulk will cause the beads to rub against rubber while they are under a considerable amount of centrifugal force, and this will happen at every tire rotation at speed. I think it will rub tire away heavily.
I know its been said but goodness...I would hate to be on record as SD Wheel basically advertising "we can fix your death wobble w/ our perfectly balanced tires". Death wobble has almost nothing, would probably say absolutely nothing to do with out of balance tires. That's a whole other animal in itself.

I very recently purchased 22" wheels from Custom Offsets (which also is SD Wheels) with 35" tires. I elected to get the Balance Beads installed, and now when i get to 55 mph my truck shakes. Such a pain. I don't know if they forgot to put beads in one of the tires, but now I have to take it to a local shop and have all 4 wheels investigated. Such a pain in the a**.
What was the outcome? I too ordered a set of wheel/tire combo from custom offset, paid extra for balancing, only to have the nittos they installed so far out of balance i couldnt drive my truck! The tires were out of round and no amount of weights fixed it!!! Customer service only offered me $50 for my inconvenience! I never recieved my refund for the balancing of the tires either!!
All the videos I've watched about this talk about centrifugal force. Just to be accurate centrifugal force is not a force but a feeling. The actual force is centripetal.
How much ounces per tire pound is needed? And does wheel weight counts as well? Thanks
Beads didn’t work for me in my new tires fitted on my Tundra. Checkered Flag had me put 6 oz in each tire. Bad bounce from 50 to 60 mph. Had to pay $100 to remove tires, vacuum out beads and remount tires and rebalance tires.
I had both and it's a crap shoot.Work truck has beads and drives nice .New bf's on personal f 150 and beads did nothing. I couldn't stand it after 1000 miles went back and had tires dismounted beads removed and balanced with weights and now it's perfect.So what do you do?
I used beads on my front motorcycle tire. It’s a sport touring bike. Seems to shimmy at high speeds the with new tire and beads. Going to change to weights to see if it helps.
Paid these guys a ton of money for my monster wheels and as far as the wheel & tires I have no complaints other than the weeks I had to wait. Seemed kinda a long time considering I could have had them shipped in 3 days and mounted within a few hours! My complaint is the $100 something dollars on top of the $3,900 wheels and tires and there was No Balance Done at all! Thats right paid extra for balance beads and Not even a Rock inside the tire to balance it. Was so pissed i took them elsewhere to get balanced cuz in 3 weeks and $3,900 the least they could have done is a little quality control! I am pretty understanding but I felt ripped off! And technically I was. Would I use them again. Possibly but ill be mounting my own tires!

Just bought brand new 38.5 x11x15 Super Swamper Boggers and we put 6 oz of balance beads per tire on brand new wheels and at 35 mph I feel like the when is going to shake my new front end loose. I just had all new steering components, wheel bearings everything is new and a new alignment. So I thought I would spend the day seeing how it worked and just bounced me all over the road. I've had big tires before but not bias ply. I fell something isn't right. Maybe more beads? The tire weighs 71 lbs without cheap metal wheel. It said 1 oz for every pound of tire and wheel combined. I drove them on the freeway for half an hour and it did not smooth out. It's really bad at 35mph. I even switched from front to back to see if it lessond and it stayed the same. Any input on,what I should do next. I payed $3700 for new tires and wheels and can't drive my rig now lol. I feel it's damaging my 4 runner. Ugh.
I put my old tires on and it drives perfect....

Yo SD Wheels can you put a tire with balance beads on the balance machine and show us the results?
Although we don't do that, the result would technically be a balanced tire. :) When we add balance beads, we do not check the tires on a balance machine as the beads provide weight where weight is needed when the tire spins due to its centripetal force.
SD Wheel that’s kind of dumb considering that if the tire is 8 or 10 oz heavy on one side, then 4 or 4oz of beads would be impossible to correct rather than just calming the shaking
@@SDWheel The point of putting a wheel with balance beads on the balance machine and see what it reads would be to prove that balance beads will actually balance the tire at speed. Also, shouldn't you put the wheel on the balance machine first to see how many ounces out of balance it is, so you know how many ounces of beads to put in? It needs enough beads to provide the needed mass to correct the imbalance.
@@JDeWittDIY We always add specific bead amount depending on the size of wheel and tire. The point of beads is to distribute balance as needed when it's needed. No balance machine would be able to calculate what’s going on inside of a tire that has balance beads, nor a company out there who calculates bead quantity by pre-balancing a tire. It just wouldn't work the same. Hope this clarifies any confusion.
@@SDWheel What I meant was put an unbalanced wheel on the balance machine and show how the machine indicates where in needs weight. Now add your beads and put it back on the machine and show how the machine will indicate that the wheel is balanced. That is what I was referring to. However, I've done some reading since, and what I described might not actually be possible, since the balance machine won't allow the wheel to wobble and bounce, and that movement is actually needed in order for the balance beads to find the correct position inside the tire to balance the wheel. I hope I've explained it clearly.
Say a motorcycle wheel has the ball weights. If you have a wheel off the ground (wheelie) does the wheel still free spin at the same rate as the adhesive balanced wheel?
I have added 200gm weight on four wheels. Technician suggested me to change the rim because of excessive weight, I need suggestions that does weight causes bearing damage?
Typically, the weight does not damage the wheel bearings especially if the wheels are rated to work for your vehicle.

Thanks for the video. How loud are beads in a 37x12.5 tire? Are they noticeable at low speeds? I’d hate to be in stop and go traffic w my windows down and hear beads rolling around.
They are very tiny beads and unnoticeable at all.
That is a ridiculous question/concern. If you think you'll hear something inside your sealed on the rim tire, then too many other odd things must cross your mind while driving and you should stay in a completely stock vehicle over to the far right lane everywhere you go before you cause an accident.
In the video you're showing Jeeps having troubles with death wobble and that has absolutely nothing to do with tire balance at all. It doesn't even have anything to do with loose suspension parts. It has everything to do with caster angle. The spec sheet on Jeeps is wrong. I can't remember if they call it positive or negative but the upper ball joint needs to be more forward to the front of the vehicle than the rear beyond what is spec and that problem will go away permanently. Even if all the suspension joints are totally crap it'll never do it if the caster angle is truly correct.
Would beads be a better option for a dually diesel 4x4 with 285/75-16 on steel wheels...rather than stick on or crimp weights ?

Only our balancing machine can determine how much is needed to make sure the tires will be balanced correctly as every tire is different.

What kinda mess are you looking at when breaking these tires down? They stay inside pretty well like water?
I've never actually witnessed them being removed or installed but I would think shop vac would suck them out of a tire pretty quickly.

Rotating tires will have to rebalance as well? Umm, why?
It is suggested to rebalance the tire after rotation because the positioning between the tire and wheels may have changed.
@@SDWheel , how has position changed if all that was done is rotating the whole wheel assembly? - you do not expect people to actually take the tire off the rims in order to rotate them do you ?

I think what they meant was that by the time you put 6,000 miles on a set of tires, the tire has began to wear and settle, certain parts of the tire that were heavy are now lighter, and most tires are not perfectly round, so the previous correction (balance) may or may not be the same as before, therefore suggesting the need to rebalance to assist in longevity of tire life...
To add, if you used balancing beads, then balancing at any point during tire life would be unnecessary unless you at some point wanted to remove the beads, then at that point you would want to pick up on balancing during tire rotations, if you do not feel and shakes or trembles and decide to rotate your tires yourself then all would be fine, to speak of...
Would it do any good, or possibly be detrimental, to add beads to a wheel/tire combo that has been already properly balanced using weights?? Kind of like life insurance or redundancy for the tire. I'm just curious.
As long as the metal weights are removed, the balancing should be relatively the same. If beads are added with balancing weights still on the wheel, it will cause the additional weight, which may cause vibration.

Death wobble is due to bad ball joints but good try
2:30 Why would you have to re-balance the wheels if you rotate them? the balance machine doesn't balance the wheel for a specific position.
Because by the time a rotation is due you have lost a bit of tread. Less mass there so naturally the same amount of wheel weight present can throw the balance off. Generally I take a half ounce off and puts me back in service quick like bunny.
Also after a ton of acceleration and deceleration the tire bead can shift on the rim

They are inexpensive which comes mostly free when you purchase a wheel and tire package while you have to pay extra for the balance beads.

How much beads (in weight) are needed for a normal 15” car tire. I have hubcaps and the weights get in the way.
We're very sorry for missing this out. We typically use between 3 oz. to 4 oz. per tire on a regular R15.
What about damage to the inner tire?
Hi! The adhesive weights are attached to the back of the wheel itself so it does not damage the tire at all.

There are few reasons that could cause wobbling, it could be that the wheels are are lug centric which means that your wheels have a bigger hub bore size compared to the vehicle's hub. You can get some hub rings to fix this issue. The other cause is you may need to rebalance your wheels and tires. You can bring your truck to the nearest shop to have them rebalanced.

I had recently had Balance beads installed, and I’ve been hearing a sort of “Grindingish” sound in the tires under 8mph but then it goes away, could this be the culprit? Kind of sounds like my brake heat shield is rubbing on something but i pushed all 4 of them back all the way around and nothing was touching. I have 19” rims, could it be due to the fact that they don’t have much room to move like a bigger tire?
I would say that if the noise wasn’t apparent before it very well could be the beads due to them being free flowing within the tire. But also they shouldn’t be too loud I wouldn’t think, I would advise to shoot us an email to get help with a replacement but in the mean time I would try to see if anyone locally can take a look quick for your safety!
Sounds great if the wheel never changes speed.
Balance bead physics are interesting. Yes they do work better on larger tires but they do work. Stick-on weights are more accurate but some like to go with beads simply because of preference and possible road issues that may knock stick-ons loose. I can’t think of a single reason why inserting a load of ceramic/metal beads into an out of balance wheel would actually balance it. Sounds like a load of old .baloney to me
