Building My Lightweight Carbon Road bike! | (a Budget vs Weight vs Quality challenge)

- How much money do you spend building a 7kg High-end Carbon Road Bike? I needed a lightweight climbing bike for my 5 day stage race in the Pyrenees (Haute Route 2022). I thought about going for rimbrake first but the parts were hard to get so went for disc anyway. I'ts build on the Winspace SLC 2.0 disc climbing frame with the new Lún Performance Hyper 2023 d38 Carbon wheels. I have good experience with winspace so far but how will this bike perform in a serious mountain race?

Part list:
Frame: Winspace SLC lightweight black size L
Wheels: Lún Performance (Winspace) Hyper 2023
Groupset: Dura Ace 9120 (di2 Disc)
Handlebar/stem: Deda superzero
Tires: Vittoria Corsa Control 28mm TLR
Saddle: prologo NDR Neck
edit I noticed I forgot to add the Nova2Ride OSPWS in the video and budget calculation. (this is not needed for the build so not a big deal. get your OSPW here bit.ly/Nova2Ride 10% off code "jaspernova10")

Always love me a good bike build vid! 7.07kgs for a disc brake size L with pedals is very impressive! Especially at that price. Look forward to your Haute Route vid :)
Good advice there Jasper, keeping it simple regarding cabling and removing spacers makes life a whole lot easier. Cracking build btw.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🤙🏻👊
The best cable routing solution I've seen is the Aurum Magma which simply routes the cables under the stem and into the frame in front of the headset bearing. This makes it very easy to install, very easy to swap stems and spacers and very easy to service the headset all while keeping a clean look. The Tarmac and Allez Sprint are almost as good but route the cables through the steerer tube and top headset bearing.
Yep I’ve seen a few that are much easier than this one…
Congratulations on your new bike homie!! Looks awesome!!
Amazing bike! Thanks for the video. Hope you have much enjoyment and success with it!
Yes big time!!! You’ll see the videos soon!
I just built this same bike about a month ago. Disc frame set, I went D/A di2 12 speed, Winspace’s Zero integrated bar, Lun 2023 Hyper 38mm wheels. Mine built up around same weight, 15lbs with cages, etc. The build was very easy, no issues at all. The bike handles and climbs amazing. Super happy with my purchase. Compared to the big brands, the same weight climbing bike with D/A di2 would cost upwards of 10k Us. Can’t beat Winspace. They’re providing n amazing bike for a phenomenal price point. I’m getting a T1500 as soon as they’re available in my size for my next build. Great vid.
Wow awesome man! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
How do u like it now?
@@marcustan5868 still very happy with my purchase. The bike is awesome.
@@marcustan5868 it performed well!🤙🏻🤙🏻
Price tag is definitely above my budget but it's not nearly as expensive as I would have guessed!
Awesome clean looking bike, it's a beautiful build! Nice work guys!
🙏🏻thanks!

Time to rock and roll,

Awesome bike, good luck! Have been waiting for Haute Rte. since the last Haute Rte. LOL Can't hold on much longer...🤣
soon!!
i like this kind of video, hyped for Your new bike Cpt. Jesper :D
I built up my SLC2.0 Rimbrake, with Hyper wheels, Ultegra 12spd a month ago. Super happy, 7.1kg. The snappy feel and Supersix like handling is amazing, the bike feels the same is not better than my old top spec Supersix evo himod. In the future I would suggest a Hambini BB to be creak free and spin nice. Great build, great vid, thanks.
how did you manage the same weight with an Ultegra groupset? lighter seatpost and handlebars?

Hello, I hope I'm not disturbing you or anything, I'm Mauro Dapporto, I am Italian, I'm interested to the SLC2.0 frame, I hope you don’t mind if I ask you some questions about this frame, but first of all I want to apologize for my poor english.
What can you say about this frame, maybe compared to other frames you own, or you have owned or tested?
How do it performs in different riding situation (climb, flat, discent).
Is it comfortable? The comfort is very important for my body.
Do you had any issue or any kind of problem?
Thank you very much for time and patience.
Best Regards.
Mauro
You've come a long way since your Fuji road bike 🤙🏻🇳🇱🤙🏻
Can't go wrong with a BOB bike. Looks absolutely stunning.
Sick build
Like it!
The bolts for the rear brake aren't too long, has nothing to do with the frame but with the fact that Shimano is counting on the rotor size adapter from 140/160mm rotors. If you leave that out, the bolts are too long of course. But another bit of weight saving by omitting the adapter :). Cool build!
yeah well we used the 140mm rotor and this required shorter bolts... (there are shorter shimino bolts but we didn't have them) also the groupset did not come with the adapter so its weird it comes with the longer bolts i guess..
This company gets a lot of compliments! That is good for us consumers. I am also interested in this bike but rim brake/mechanical of course 😉
Try getting the parts…. That will be the hard part
@@jasperverkuijl I know right? 😉 But actually I have pretty good sources like Merlin for groups or even in the USA here at times like Excel & Colorado Cyclist. Also I only ride one bike so I can also move things over when if I decide to go back to carbon. Thanks for the video & let us know what you think once you've ridden awhile! Thanks!!
Eagerly waiting for the review video.
slick looking climbing machine !
Another awesome vid - just what’s needed this time of year for motivation ! What’s your view on Sram with easier climbing gears - I’m thinking of going for a bike with the 10- 36 cassette for the Dolomites next year - what gear ratios were on this build?👌
I think I put in an image of the front chainrings. 36-50, 11-32 cassette.
In general I have everything Shimano so like To stay with Shimano so stuff is compatible. (Switching wheels etc)
Nice bike Jasper!
Can you tell youre bike geo?
Seatpost height
Saddle setback
Saddle to bar drop
Saddle tip to hoods
Etc
Good luck at haute route!
Great video mate. Looking forward too the bike review and riding in the mountains. May a ask why disc and not rim? Could have been 6.5kg as disc a generally 500g heavier.
It was almost impossible to find the parts for rim brake setup at that time.
Also the disc gave me better security on shitty weather descents and it is worth more when i want to sell it. (Rim brake bikes are worth nothing 2nd hand)..
Great video, cannot wait for the videos where you race on it! How much was the cost for the assembling?
I have the Haute Route videos ready to go very soon!
in this case the build was free of charge by Handmade in Weesp because they wanted to help me out and like the collaboration.
@@jasperverkuijl i have been waiting for those haute route videos 🙏
Since this is a lightweight setup, I would put rim brake Campy 11 speed Centaur on that bike, 38mm rims and it would probably come out something like 4K Euro (possibly less with a discount code!) and lighter and easier to travel with. But it is still very good this way and a good price.
Feather 🪶 light
Love your channel and the energy you bring to it. Was watching this video on the lightweight carbon build and am curious whether your Deda Superzero handlebar is the carbon or alloy version. I have the alloy version and matching Superzero stem on my old Tarmac. I'm considering the carbon version of the bars for a new build. Do you still like the carbon version and have they held up under use?
The bars are carbon. Stem is alu.
I don’t like the shape of the bars so much but in general it was a great combo and help up great.
Nice video! and that is a great price imo for a dura ace build,
Rim brake would have gotten you under 7kg 😬
Thanks for the video man! Interesting stuff!, Personally, I would save at least about 2000 euros looking at your part list, as Id definitely don't want to spend 2500 euro on a groupset. I mean, sadly I have never rode with di2, but I doubt it would add 2500 times more fun to my riding if I would mount ultergra or even the new di2 105 groupset.
I wasn't planning to build a cheap bike, I wanted a top notch bike with the winspace frame! So dura ace it was!
i agree, for ride experience a ultegra groupset would work just fine.
Very, very nice bike 👍
Sunday morning with coffee and this video = Great! Winspace is probably the only way to go to get a super bike at an acceptable price these days.
6 years ago I got a similar deal, 5500 euros, for a fully built Focus Izalco Max size 56 with eTap, powermeter, Chris King BB, and DT Swiss wheels. Price of similar Izalco build has almost doubled since then, it’s ridicuolus!
Weight? I’ve kept the rim brakes but replaced the other components with carbon stash + put on Mavic’s 1295 grams R-SYS wheels: 6.2kg. But the best thing is external wiring, just saying, so easy. Only two wires, of course, due to eTap. It might steal a watt or two and I couldn’t care less.
Yep makes life easier haha
That's how I've always wrapped my bartape, and then my LBS mechanics who do it better than me always do it that way too!
amazing beautiful. I have question Winspace doesn't sell the plug for external cable hole??
Yes it comes with the bike!
There are 2 holes I filled with black silicone kit (the front brake hose on top of the front fork) but the plugs for holes for the shift cables are provided
nice Jasper, i was wondering which groupset have you used on the Pyrenees, 52-36 11-30 ?
Yes
beautiful build !! question, what are you guys spraying in 10:38 onto the frame?
Some sort of frame cleaner
Which Prologo saddle do you use? And why do you like it? I have been thinking of making that switch from my Specialized Romin.
Dimension. It was on the Cannondale supersix and i liked it so put it on my other bikes too
Crazy, I recently finished up my dream CAAD 12 build and it weighs in at 6.45kg (with alloy wheelset) and I spend around 2300usd on building it up. Enjoyed watching the process though!
So true.
We're going backward in the bike industry sadly.
Sure, rimbrake setup is much lighter.
Just tubular rimbrake wheels alone would already get you that difference probably…
13:30 its almost amazing that every component costs exactly €1 for every 1gram of its weight
You should put on "Reynolds 58 Aero wheelset",mate,..(if there sold with disc brakes)....CHEERS! 😃😃😃
Not for a climbing setup 😜
Great video. I was about to go down on a pair of hyper 38’s but I am intrigued with what you say about the new unreleased ones in the video. Especially them being wider as I would like to run some 28’s but current external width is 26… doesn’t work with 105% rule. Do you know when these wheels will be released?? Very interested to know. Thanks
The wheels I talked about in this video are the new 2023 hypers! (When I built the bike they were still unreleased)
So the hyper 2023 38’s are what you see in this video
@@jasperverkuijl hyper doesn’t have a 2023 38mm rim though… they have the d33?
@@eliasharder8774 oh yeah thats what I meant, d33
Oh ok. Thanks 😅
If the carbon is good I'd say you got a damn good bike at a great price.
That internally routed fork (d shaped) does not look like the one they are selling with the current frame set? is this the actual slc 3.0?
Nope this is the same as now online, the SLC 2.0
Hi Jasper, nice bike!!! Winspace rocks. Why not Rim brakes?
Couldn’t find parts!
💪🔥
Hi I was wondering what product the technician used tot clean the bike (the ratlle can) because I have some stubborn grease stains on the mat finish of my bike.
Don’t know. But classic brake cleaner will clean just about anything
Nice build Jasper! This is exactly the kind of bike I want to build.
I'm thinking about sizing : how tall are you?
Im 186cm
@@jasperverkuijl Awesome, I'm the same height. So good!
While all black bikes don't always look awesome, I have to say this bike looks awesome! I'm curious how it rides ✌🏻
Thanks 🙏🏻
black bikes matter.
Could I ask you why you get the 11 speed Durace (9120) instead of the new one (9170) thank you so much Jasper!
💸💸 the new dura ace is heavier and about 1500€ more expensive 🤪😵💫😵💫
@@jasperverkuijl yesss , I was thinking the same
That's the exact same way I wrap my bars. No issues on my end. People are trolls.
I hate this internal routing cables. From one side the bike looks neat and posh, but let's say I would like to do smth simple like cleaning headset bearings. Am I able to do this in your bike without disconnecting hydraulic brakes from levers? :)
Yep it’s a pain in the ass
what size cassette? Looking forward to hearing how it rides.
11-32
How much did it cost for the bike shop to build your bike? Or I see in your case they did it for free, but do you know the general price range for them to build it?
I asked them. It would be about 350
what are the extra wires going through the cockpit? I thought the new di2 shifter is wireless
This is not the new dura ace. It’s 9100 group.
jasper - what about a review of the bike after having pushed it to the max in Europe . cheers
Yeah want to do a review. Usually those are a lot of work and I have some other stuff to get done too now so don’t know when..

imagine how light it'd be and the feeling of this bike with direct mount rim brakes, just imagine.
That would be amazing I think 🤗
Perhaps it’s a silly question, but what is the grey kit you use to cover the holes of the inner shift cables?
This was just some kind of super high tec glue kit. Cant remember what exactly. Don’t think it matters, it’s just to close the gap

The Deda Superzero stem on this bike appears to have internal cable routing. I'm trying to find one online, but cannot locate one. Only Deda stem available, with internal cable routing, seems to be the Superbox stem, which is not as pretty or sleek as your stem. What is the exact model of the stem you fitted to this bike? David 🇮🇪
It’s the super zero
It’s hollow and works with the D shaped fork of the Winspace.
@jasperverkuijl Did you have any issues with the placement of brake levers on handlebars? These Superzero bars are supposed to be difficult to slide or place levers further up, as the bar diameter gets bigger. Makes higher placement of levers, for greater comfort, impossible? David 🇮🇪
@@davidryan4053mmm no idea. Just placed them at a “normal “ position and seemed to have no issues
interesting that even on a sped up video you can see how much a pro mechanic hates working on all the internal routed crap
😅
Hallo, can i assemble a 46-30 crankset with mechanic Ultegra derailleur ? Sorry for my english!
I don’t know 🤷🏼♂️
That crank does not rotate freely.
Best change it to a Hambini bottom bracket.
...or any BB with NSK.VV bearings and don't use hybrid ceramic bearing BBs.
The Shimano BB isn’t the best no 😩
Can you also include the mechanic work in the summary? The price you put here is a bit misleading without it 😜 Great built by the way, cheers
I actually never asked handmade what they would charge.
Ive asked another bikeshop in the past and they said (only) 150€. So I guess it can be relatively cheap? Dunno

my 5.88kg Cannondale CAAD12 costs me only $2k. Aluminum frame and wheelset. only the cockpit are carbon
Very nice bike.
My 15 year old carbon bike is only around 650g heavier which is surprising. (Rim brake + old dura ace drivetrain is lighter than disc brake + Di2 however)
Yup, the old stuf is very light
what's your height? what's stem lenght? 120? 130mm?
186, it’s 120mm
How long did it take the technician to completely assemble it?
Maybe 1,5 hours
🤣 Everyone else around the world has a long and impossible name for "kit" I salute the Dutch for calling everything sticky that comes out of a tube the same.
keep it simple (Y)
Jasper, a full DA 9100 di2 group set with power meter crank is only €2500?
only the Da9100 di2 groupset, not the powermeter. the powermeter is assioma pedals and that would add 600€! i found this really good deal in belgium online store.

Let me tell you something, guys. This bike is not as good as top-tier western brands, it's actually better. Better quality carbon layup with no voids, wrinkles and tenting (check Luescher Teknik why this is important), better QC, and weight comparable to top tier western framesets.
I'm just sorry that Winspace has slightly smaller sizing than most western brands, and XXL size of SLC frameset is marginally smaller than I would prefer (202cm and 110kg). Also, they don't offer their aero frame even close to that size (XL is their max frame size). I hope this will change in the future.
Otherwise, Winspace for the win!
yep they tend to be on the smaller size and do go very big in xxl or so..
@@jasperverkuijl That's true, and I would definitely buy one if they would offer additional size over their XXL, something that Cannondale, Trek and Pinarello offer for very tall cyclists (to name a few companies that cater tall people).
I do really believe that they offer superior quality (and especially pricing) comparable or exceeding top tier western brands, but sizing issue is too big for me. For the time being, I will stick to what I currently own.
You should call the bike 007

I didn’t say “low budget”, just budget.
Budget doesn’t mean cheap, it just means the amount spent
ok so when i build rly light bikes, theres only 2 things i dont skimp on, brakes and saddle. ive tried the carbon ZTTO brakes and they absolutely blow ass. and shimano 6600 calipers are only 60 grams heavier. and saddle for obvious reason to save my gooch. my bikes come out to 15lbs/6.8kg without carbon wheels and 13lbs/5.8 with.
and by skimp out on i mean weight wise. ill buy heavier components to save my life/ genital's lolol

Lightweight with disc brakes...
My 2006 Cervelo Soloist Carbon with deep section wheel's, with 2 bottle cages and head unit mount is 700g lighter than this.
It cost me 3390€ to build it myself.
Of course with glued 22mm tubulars not like this graevel climbing abomination.
dont blame me, blame the industry! rim brake parts are near impossible to find! I tried to build it as rim brake bike but it was too uncertain with parts availability...
besides that, I was happy with my disc brakes when descending in the pyrenees in cold and (Very) wet conditions! stay tuned for my race documentary!
just the tubular wheels alone wil almost be the 700gr difference! Tubeles tire setup is actually quite heavy but its the rolling resistance and puncture resistance that makes up for it (partly)
