Ma'am I saw you performing on Doordarshan around the year 1976-77. Late Amin Sayani introduced you on TV who was also the anchor. What a live performance ! Unmatched even today.
Sadly Preeti Sagar’s career couldn’t be as big as she deserved. She became a victim of Lata Mangeshkar. Many are mislead by Lata that the dispute between her and Rafi was over royalty. However insiders know that before public fall out over songs’ royalty, Lata was upset that Rafi was singing with singers other than Lata and Asha. Rafi declined to choke the careers of other singers. Rafi was a perfect gentleman. He didn’t interfere with the jobs of music director, lyricist and producer. The tension of Rafi’s refusal to facilitate Lata’s monopoly resulted in an eruption of her anger disguised as a policy differences over the royalty. We don’t know what Lata said to Rafi that made the otherwise cool Rafi so mad that he said that he wouldn’t sing with Lata going forward. Rafi and Asha both had the same stand on royalty yet Asha being Lata’s sister patched up with her but the duo ganged up against Rafi for rest of their lives. They kept denigrating Rafi’s singing. Lata set up her monopoly over playback singing and like a gangster finished off her competition. To name a few Geeta Dutt, Mubarak Begum, Suman Kalyanpur, Sharda, Sudha Malhotra, Kanchan, Vani Jayaram, Sulakshna Pandit, Usha Timothy, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Mangeshkar fell victim to her. It’s a shame that amongst hundreds of crores of people India could not have another singer. Music lovers didn’t have a choice and were denied many good singers who could have enthralled them. Lata was a bully. She boycotted SD Burman, Sajjad Hussain, Jai Kishan, Raj Kapoor, Khemchand Prakash, Mohammed Rafi when they worked with other singers.
