Hawaii gets robbed of one of the most insane comebacks in basketball history

- Опубліковано 30 лис 2022
- During the college basketball game between Hawaii and Texas A&M Commerce, Hawaii trailed 53-46 with just 13 seconds left. They then scored a layup with under four seconds left to make it 53-48. They then got the bal back after an errant Texas A&M Commerce inbounds pass went out of bounds. They quickly hit a three to make it 53-51 with 1.8 seconds left. Then, Texas A&M Commerce somehow turned the ball over again on the inbounds pass and Hawaii secured the ball and hit the buzzer beating three to win it 54-53... but the refs blew the whistle before the shot as they ruled the Texas A&M Commerce player who touched the ball on the play was out of bounds. However, upon replay it was clear that he was not even close to being out of bounds. Hawaii instead how to inbound the ball but missed the potential game winning three and lost 53-51 in heartbreaking fashion.

I have never seen that big of a late whistle for an out of bounds play in my life, and the ref wasn’t even looking at the play
@@AsylumSaint ok Sherlock, how is it hard to blow a whistle if you get hit him the head🤡
@@AsylumSaint lights knocked out? What were you watching
tell us all you know nothing about officiating without telling us you know nothing about officiating.
@@AsylumSaint if you don’t see the player or ball go out of bounce, you don’t call it. There are other refs and reviews for that reason.
In the nfl, if you are not 100% sure that it is an incomplete pass, you call it a fumble and potentially overturn the review later.
@@AsylumSaint my point is that the ref doesn’t see the player touching the ball as he is bumped by the player. If he tipped the ball back in and ran into the ref a millisecond after it would have been in bounds. One of the other refs should have made the call or the ref who called it out should have waited to review it. The other refs know the rules and were probably just waiting for the game to end to review it to avoid making the wrong call.
Hawaii’s sportsmanship at the conclusion of the game…respect.
Yea. It’s a tough sport to officiate. Cause if u blow the whistle, u have to call something, not like football where u can pick up flags.
Review the play after just like you do when a buzzer beater is hit
The ball was out of bounds, the ref knew it was because the player with the ball touched the ref who was out of bounds
They did. That's why they got the ball with 1.8 seconds left
@@duncachinoahimiha3889 the ball never went out of bounds 🤦🏻♂️.. and you can contact an official who is out of bounds and still be in bounds. It’s only out of bounds if the ball touches the referee directly. If someone was deemed out of bounds just for touching a person who is out of bounds then defenses could just step out of bounds and touch the person with the ball.
@@duncachinoahimiha3889 bro what LMAO. If a player is in the air, the ball is still in bounds. You know nothing about basketball. The ball can be over the baseline if the player does not make contact with the ground. The ref shouldn't have been standing there, the player never made contact with the floor with posession of the ball over the baseline. You are goofy asf.
The ironic thing is that the entire Hawaii coaching staff was screaming at the referee to blow the whistle for the out of bounds call. He blows the whistle right as the guy makes the shot. Then they’re like “Why did you blow the whistle!?”
That's hilarious.
Good point.
They wanted him to blow it when the guy caught it but he didn’t and Hawaii made the shot then he finally blows it
@@bouncyhousestudios9421i mean he blew the whistle before he made the shot to be fair
To be fair the head coach was only upset that he blew the whistle. He didn't complain about the out of bounds
Everyone: Going bonkers
Ref: Whistles at the exact moment he shot
When things like this are clearly wrong, the NCAA should have the power to override it.
Actually, this was the correct call. The official is contacted when he was out of bounds, which by rule is out of bounds.
@@BigCManMusic True. Ref shouldn't be standing in bounds on the play though. He had half his body on the field of play instead of getting out of the way.
@@BigCManMusic I mean like half
Of one foot is why is he standing next to the inbounder? His fuckup lead to a stupid but legit call it is his fault ultimately stop feeling sorry for the retard
This was clearly right
@@BigCManMusic Even when half of him is in bounds?
I had a bet on Texas A&M commerce but after seeing this I kind of wish this comeback happened. That’s insane
If you're placing bets on this game you may (definitely do) have a serious gambling problem
Absolute degenerate behavior
Everyone’s a critic lol
Who the hell bets on Texas A&M commerce?
Dude is likely lying. Hawaii was favored by 10.5.
Should have ran a play for the guy that already made the shot
They did. #3 was open to the left of the big man that (for some reason) decided to take a fadeaway 3 from NBA range. SMH.
For those wondering, here is the rule straight from the rule book:
Rule 7:
Section 1. Out of Bounds-Player, Ball
Art. 1. A player shall be out of bounds when he touches the floor or any object
other than a person on or outside a boundary line. An airborne player’s status
shall be where he was last in contact with the floor.
Art. 2. The ball shall be out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of
bounds, any other person, the floor or any object on or outside a boundary, the
supports or back of the backboard, or the ceiling or overhead equipment.
Art. 3. The ball shall be out of bounds when any part of the ball passes over the
backboard from any direction.
A player can touch another person out of bounds, but the ball cannot. Since only the player touched the referee and not the ball, It is not ruled out of bounds and play should have continued. By the letter of the law, Hawaii was robbed.
ref should have gotten out of the fking way
@@lilgoalie7 Totally! It's really weird, I am a high school referee, and the first lesson I was told was to always keep the entire play of field in front of you and NEVER let a player be behind you. Really strange positioning by the ref to be in the way like that.
It sucks but look at the coaches for Hawaii screaming at the ref to blow it dead because he was “out of bounds.” It sucks but had they not maybe he doesn’t blow it. Humans can be persuaded due to pressure especially if they didn’t witness it. Hopefully it doesn’t cost them a spot in the dance
Unfortunately the guy travelled to get behind the 3-point line, so the shot shouldn't have counted either way. At least with the out-of-bounds they had a better chance to win. Too bad they came up short. Everybody loves a good comeback.
While I conceptually agree to the letter of the law, I think this in praxis isn't full proof. Had the shot missed - I'm sure the public opinion would swing the other way in wanting the out of bounds call, which in my opinion, is a pretty favorable outcome in general.
The issue is that by these literal rules, one could make a case that players/coaches/refs could just hold up or push players back into the lines of the court on late game plays/traps to keep balance or keep the game in play.
Realistically, I see this mostly the refs fault for even being that close to the situation. Ultimately, I think the refs reviewed and called a logical call because even if he wasn't there, that player probably would have 1) stepped out of bounds, or 2) thrown the ball up and wasted a significant amount of time + a more unfavorable shot. The refs may have even been able to call a re-play because the ref interfered very evidently with the play.
Definitely sucks, but a 1.8s inbounds opportunity isn't so bad of a consolation either.
When I saw the score and time I thought you uploaded the wrong video. Hawaii should've had an all-timer
The clock delayed a little at :0.7
For anyone saying they were robbed: rules state that if player/ball contacts an official standing out of bounds, the play is dead and the ball is out of bounds
THANK YOU!!! So many idiots here getting their panties in a bunch in a game involving teams they don't follow/care about when they don't even know the rules and just want to hate on referees any chance they can...
@@KG-xt4oq The ref was standing in bounds though which was shitty. Technically the correct call, but get out of the field of play when the ball comes at you moron lol
That is the rule, YET this is a microcosm of what is wrong in today's world. Use common sense instead of going into "Chapter 5; paragraph 11; sub-section 2"
Soft as bunnies.
@@kalen1702 So where is he supposed to stand? How is he supposed to know where the players are going and where the ball is being passed? The coaches and players were screaming for an out of bounds call, then changed their tune when dude hit the shot, which wouldn't count anyway...the clock pauses at 00.7 seconds, so there's no way the shot would have been out of players hand before time runs out.
@@KG-xt4oq just sayin he sees the ball coming at him and moves towards the field of play instead of into the out of bounds section. Just thought that was odd reaction that caused the confusion that followed
literally heartbreaking
1. the player traveled on the 3 even if they had let it play on.
2. the ref was standing out of bounds and the player touched him with the ball in hands, by rule the ball is dead right there.
3. because someone will say the ref was in the wrong spot, he is exactly where officiating teams tell you to stand, it was just a terrible inbounds pass.
learn the rules before you start complaining 😂
I thought that was a travel !
I’ve got sympathy for the official here. He blew his whistle late because he got bumped into and almost fell over. The bench started yelling at him to make a call and he thought he saw the player step out of bounds with the ball. He got it wrong, but he didn’t have much to work with. It’s a tough job.
I don’t feel bad for the official at all, should be held accountable if anything.
@@patrickmosley9456 The Hawaii bench got exactly what they wanted. Had he not blown it and the kid shot an air ball out of bounds you’d be hissy the other way. Can’t win with fans
Bruh what. It was the refs fault for not being out of bounds. His negligence caused a violation to happen that robbed Hawaii of a game winner. Ref doesn’t deserve sympathy
Ref thought he stepped out just like #44 on Hawaii did too 😂
Same guy that airballed the redemption three LMAO
Hawaii kid traveled on the inadvertent whistle, anyway
I had Hawaii live ML and had no idea this happened….
Dang after this shot, Jovon hits an actual GW on Christmas!
they didnt even argue
That airball😂
Well, for one, the official is in play, and he was standing out of bounds, so out of bounds to Hawaii is the right call.
For two, the shot wouldn't have counted anyway because the clock operator stopped it at 0.7 for just long enough for the player to get the shot off. He wouldn't have been able to with a running clock. If you count it out, the player had just left the ground and was on his way up when the clock actually hit zeroes, ball still completely in hand.
Hawaii should've drawn up a better play on the inbounds for that last attempt if they wanted to win. They didn't get robbed at all.
Yeah, 100% correct. Also Hawaii can’t complain when their coaches on the bench are screaming for them to call the out of bounds.
Replays are needed
How come every vid on this channel either has 2 ads or a 15 second no skip ad?
It's embarrassing for me to watch as a Knicks fan, but I think I'm about to rewatch the clip of Reggie Miller's 8 in 8.9 at the Garden.
T-mac it'll help
Maybe if the whole bench wasn’t screaming out of bounds to the ref, he wouldn’t have called it. Teams own staff set them up.
description doesn't do it justice
it was less than 4 seconds
this is the most tamu-c way of winning a basketball game ever
You telling me this is a real school?
You know that ref got jumped after
Then the ref walked off the court and kissed his betting slip.
That's why he will never make it past this level.
Crazy they didn’t call a timeout to draw up an inbound play
Alt title:
Hawaii robs their own player and team of one of the biggest comebacks in basketball history.
Oh nooo shooter was in the air by the time the whistle came out, ouch
Ref's need to be held accountable... That's an unforgivable call.
Oh shut up. He traveled anyway nerd
D2 school beats Hawaii? Wow
Plays like that should be able to review the replay.
911 what's your emergency. Me: a robbery was just committed . Hawaii lost the game by a b.s. call
Hawaii coach should’ve got a tech though for being on the court during the inbounds play.
What a comeback!
Dude travelled so the whistle was right
Nice catch
When in doubt, let ‘em play
I made a live bet on the under 105.5 for this game, best believe I'm buying those refs dinner
I reffed for a little bit. That ref should have never been in-bounds, or at least should have the ability to get out of the way. He was completely out of position. Baffling mistake from a D1 ref.
That ref would be getting a nice break from officiating if I were the commissioner of that association. Some things wrong here: 1. He's not even looking at the play anyway when the "catch and save" happens. 3. He gets contacted by a Texas A&M Commerce player, not the ball, while the official is standing out of bounds. For that play to properly be ruled to be out of bounds, the ref would have to have been hit by the ball or the player would have to hit the floor or an object which is out of bounds (Not a person out of bounds), while in contact with the ball OR the player be in the air when contacting the ball after the player was last in contact with an object or the floor out of bounds. None of this was the case. Total blown call and even worse since the ref wasn't looking at the play at all.
Lmao at that final shot attempt. Wtf was that?
I would of lost my mind if I was the coach
I wonder what the line on this game was if I was betting on this game I would be pissed if that screwed up the line
Ref had that parlay
Guy travelled on the stepback before he shot anyway, not that they would call it
To me looked like the play was dead way b4 the shot-even the shooter didn't think it counted
Bro my alumni school got robbed haha
Someone needs to hold the refs accountable. Would love to see a player coach or fan beat the shit out of one of them.
What the hell is Tamu commerce?
Why'd he blow the whistle?
Had the 104.5 under, THANKS REF.
So did he 😂
@@nolanmeister3540 No doubt.
The thrill of victory ✌️ .. became the agony of defeat .. 😕
I put a timer on it and if the clock hadn't stopped periodically at 00.7, he might've been too late with the shot anyway.
Why is the announcer trying to sound like Andrew tate when he says Hawaii 😭😂
It looked like he was touching the ball and the ref at the same time. Since the ref is out of bounds and considered part of the floor, player is out of bounds.
So you're telling me that there would be a possibility when a player touches the ref that they'd have to review whether or not the ref's shoes were out of bounds?
yup. unfortunately for hawai'i this is the correct call. you know the rules
yeah this. could’ve been amazing though. tough!
I don't think that's correct, that only applies if the ball touches the ref. If that's a player standing there, it's not out of bounds.
@@AB-lc5ve i see your point. looked it up: “The player is out-of-bounds when he touches the floor or any object on or outside a boundary.” the player was touching the ball and the ref who was out of bounds at the same time, so it is out of bounds, correct call. but a bummer nonetheless.
It sucks for Hawaii but I think that was the right call. Player had the ball and made contact with ref who was out of bounds, so it’s a dead ball/out of bounds.
Correct
The referee should have backed up but didn't even see the ball coming
@@10thletter40 Agreed. Horrible job by the ref in not getting out of the way of the player. He can't ignore the out-of-bounds because of that.
A player shall be out of bounds when he touches the floor or any object other than a person on or outside a boundary line
A ref is a person, so it doesn’t count as out of bounds
No one cares
This is why you let them play it out the last minute unless it’s intentional.
I hate to be that guy, but wasn’t the ball out of bounds first since the player bumped into the ref (who was out of bounds)? He probably took a while to blow the whistle because he got bumped.
Speaking ad a basketball ref you have to call out of bounds as soon as it happens, he called it a full second later as the player got ready to hit the game winning shot
Nothing wrong with waiting a second to make the correct call
Look at the bench, he missed the call by being hit thought that the actions leading to it meant it went out of bounds. The entire Hawaii bench was saying out of bounds
The ref wasn’t looking at the play.
For fuck’s sake.
The shooter traveled
Can we talk about the TAMU commerce kids celebrating like they didn't just have a historically awful collapse??
i have never even heard of texas a&m Commerce. what is that a business school?
Yeah it is a shame! Damage was done already. A great play under odd circumstances! No use in going back and trying to correct it .. kind of a toss-up. Agree with the previous comment that the rule needs to be more clearly defined not just left up for interpretation on the fly. In is in and out is out , no in-betweens!- off the court/ on the court when it comes to referees being involved in the court of play , let alone obstructing the play!
Right call, he hit the ref who was standing out of bounds, which makes the ref an extension of the sideline. Late whistle was because the ref had gotten hit in the head. Great job by the officiating crew.
I thought the Texas AM player stepped out of bounds with the ball but he didn't and that was why the ref blew the whistle. Should've been a Hawaii win and totally agree with previous comments, let's review it/the video and get it right.
Clearly, replay review has to be part of the rules.
If the ref hadn't been standing in the way, A&M would have inbounded the ball.
It appears to me the whistle blew a microsecond before he released. I could be wrong!
The ball wasn’t even out of bounds!!
so the Hawaii staff wanted the out of bounds call until the shot went in?
That sucks
How tf do you blow your whistle when you're looking at the floor?
Because he was hits by the guy with the ball. He is out of bounds and so therefore it is out of bounds. Sucks for Hawaii but it was correct
@@jordanharrison8769 that's not true. The ref is part of the court but it's not like if the ref's toe is on the line and someone touches him then he's out of bounds.
You think you know what you're talking about but you don't.
What a second. The real question is who the hell is TAMU COMMERCE??
Refs have too much power in a game. Refs like that need to be fired
Lol well the Hawaii coaches were saying it was out so sucks for them
that's tuff
People just can’t quit robbing Hawaii.😂
Not a blown call, player with ball touched ref who was out of bounds, ref part of the court, thus player out of bounds prior to shot.
That official should be fired and banned. Obviously had something riding on the game.
This game had a lot less controversy than what appears…
The Hawaii player who picked up the loose ball (for the alleged potential game-winner) caught it and established his right foot as his pivot with his left foot off of the ground. Then he put down the left foot behind the 3-point line and followed by picking up and putting back down the right foot outside of the arc. Thus, it was an uncalled traveling violation. If you cannot see what I just described, then turn down the video playback speed to 0.25x and watch that segment of the play again!
Nothing related to traveling violation called after whistle was blown; my point was addressing the speculative “would’ve-could’ve-should’ve” alleged controversy of saying the officials ought to have allowed and counted that 3-point basket.
I just posted about this. Hadn't seen yours yet. Yes, major travel.
SoI'm good with the result.
Refs should never decide a game
Stop with these misleading video titles, that is 100% the correct call!
The official blew the whistle. The rules say when the whistle is blown, play is stopped. But as the replays show, that official clearly had no business blowing that whistle. The ball never went out of bounds, the official who blew the whistle had his back turned to the play and didn't even see it. As a result, Hawaii was robbed.
Very unfortunate, but with the Texas player crashing into the ref it's understandable.
The guy traveled and the clock for some reason stopped at 0.7 seconds for maybe a full second. No controversy
If it makes the Hawaii fans feel better, that was an obvious travel on the game winner that was whistled dead.
Didnt know jim joyce worked college games too
To be fair, I think the clock expired first
I wish and wanted it to count
official clearly blew the call, but instead of admitting to that, he let his ego take control. such bullshit!
I don't get it...
I never understand why refs don’t let the game play and then fix it later ESPECIALLY when it’s a close call in an important moment
it was the right call learn the game
Hawaii player travels before hitting the shot with .1 left
they started the clock late on the 3 pointer here. 0:22
