    Where is the cool jet action I see from some of these on youtube? I'd really like to know why some burn like a candle (this one), and others sound like a jet engine. Can anyone comment? Thanks.

      I think... It's a version of an "Automatic Alcohol Torch". Sometimes, they take 15 minutes or more to completely warm up, but when they do they'll have a full on torch flame. Which often have an aggressive sound. imo

    I just made one. I was out of 1/4" soft copper so I used 2/4" aluminum Pilot Tubing and didn't need the sale or sand to not kink it because it is softer than the copper pipe. Plus Cheaper!

      I was thinking aluminum tube initially, but could not find any readily. Good to know it will also work for the version.

    I’m trying desperately to thread my 1/4” copper tubing without it bending and twisting in my hand. Massive fail! I used the M7 die and I can only get about 2 turns before my tube starts contorting. Even a vise doesn’t stop it. What am I doing wrong? Please make a video of you doing this part from start to finish.

      Go slow at first and use some tapping oil or some other lubricant to help. The copper was pretty soft and didn't give me any issue once I got it started. Don't use a vise since it will definitely twist. If you're using a thinner gauge copper tube that may also contribute to twisting.

    Carbon felt works amazing as a wick for the stove it will make it sound like a torch or rocket

      Thanks for the tip. Never seen that stuff in the regular hardware store around here. Will have to look for it on Amazon.

    I did one of these but put a SS wire mesh mantle around it with a lid. The mantle heated the coil much more and it burns like a jet. I got a 1026° reading on the lid with it but the glass jar was heating up below so I abandoned it....and that was using 91% alcohol.

      That's an interesting experiment. I'd be worried about the glass cracking at that temp so might have to try this with a metal reservoir instead. Thanks for the tip.

    What a great idea to thread the copper pipe, I've not seen anyone else building one like that, your flame should be more blue, perhaps opening the gap between the coils may help, I think the gap distance is critical. One tip, if you put a lantern mantle over the flame you will get a very bright light and if you hav one or 2 of these heating a metal pipe above and blow air through the pipe with a small fan, you will get a decent fuel fan heater for your room. What is your fuel consumption on this stove?

      Thank you for the suggestions. I'll have to experiment more for sure. I had a better blue flame at first but tweaked the hole to be bigger and bent the coils out which I don't think helped. As far as fuel consumption I'm really not sure. I only ran it for around 45 minutes and didn't really notice what it was using. I still had plenty left after that run.

    Which brand of die did you use? Maybe it’s superior to the one I have.

      Just a regular Irwin die you can get at Home Depot.

    Drilling the 1.5 mm hole in the coil works much better, and is more accurately centred, if it is done when the pipe is bent to 180 degrees. The drill will fit and the pipe will allign itself on the forming pipe to keep the hole pointing up when the coil is completed, so long as the hole is taped closed to stop the salt falling out.

      @ShinyInsanity  Рік тому

      Not sure I follow the process you mentioned. Are there any videos with examples of how this is done?

    • @carlyoung6111
      @carlyoung6111 Рік тому

      @@ShinyInsanity No videos but maybe I can better explain. The way you formed the coil was to bend the pipe into the complete coil before drilling the hole. The completed coil made aligning the drill bit almost impossible as 1.5 mm drill bits are too short. If you drill the hole when the pipe is formed into a 'U' , you can get a 1.5 mm drill exactly where it needs to be. Put a bit of tape over the hole to stop the salt from escaping. Drop the 'U' shaped pipe over the pipe that you are forming the coil around. Complete the bend and the drill hole will be correctly centred on the finished coil. Continue to form the coil to complete the bending. When the salt is removed and the burner set into the mason jar and lit, the flame will go between the two pipes above it, not pointing to the side. That is what happened when I used your method.

    I'm confused. You used a 1/4 inch diameter length of copper tube and placed the holes in the lid with a 1/4 inch bit.
    Why use a metric tap and die set to cut the threads? I'm not tool savvy so don't roll your eyes, but why can't you use an SAE tap and die set?

    • @ShinyInsanity
      @ShinyInsanity  Рік тому

      You want the gap between the pipe and the lid to be as small as possible to avoid leaks so using a bit that is as close as possible to the pipe diameter is ideal. You would have to wiggle the drill a little to get the hole barely larger than the 1/4 size to get them to fit. The inside diameter of the pipe was closest in size to a metric tap size I had and fit better than any SAE tap would. Hope this helps.

    Maybe I missed it? But you made an alcohol burner and didn't say what type of alcohol that you are using?...From the looks of your flame I'm guessing Isoprypol alcohol. If you want a bluer flame burn Denatured Alcohol in it (Heet yellow bottle) and you'll have better flame results.

    • @ShinyInsanity
      @ShinyInsanity  Рік тому

      Yup, standard grocery store isopropyl alcohol. I can't remember if it was the 70 or 90% ratio but wanted to test it with more readily available fuel versus using the good stuff (i.e. full strength denatured).

    I actually had a friend one time offer me coffee when I stopped by his place to visit. He went to make it and discovered that he was out of coffee fiters so he used his underwear and told me before he served it up. Nah, I said.
    Why they're clean I washed them? And he was serious. He drank it. I didn't. (Don't use your underwear!! Lol!)
