The term ''pistol'' was being used to describe handguns, including revolvers, for a century before semi-autos came along.

Those Italians love the American Old West and it's cool they keep producing replicas of the Old West guns. Love the firing pin vs the transfer bar. Just so much more authentic looking.

the term pistol is used for any firearm designed to held and fired in the hand , used from the first single shot wheellock muzzleloaders .

Yeah, the "distinction" between pistol and revolver is a very recent fabrication of the late 20th century. To be honest, I didn't really hear it in common "tacticool" jargon until post 2000.
When the 1873 was made that distinction was non existent.

    • @BrockNessMonster1991

Exactly, this is a pistol, always has been. The term “pistol” has nothing to do with the function or action of the handgun.

He's so right about the plating. I bought a pair of S&W Model 15s back in the day, one in chrome plate and one in nickel. Well the nickel plating had a couple of quarter inch bubbles where the the plating didn't adhere to the base metal. That bothered me until someone robbed my house and stole it from me. Never saw it again.

I picked one up 14 hours ago, I seen it three weeks ago and after coming home from the shooting range to the gun shop, I snaped it up (Mines not nickel plated like yours though). another reason I bought the gun is because I already have three western belt holster set for a 38 special colt 45. designed gun, So I needed a gun to go along with those holsters (sad note that the belts are too short for I've gained weight).

Thanks for another great single action revolver review. The non-transfer-bar variants by Pietta are my favorite "Colt clone"; EMF (Early and Modern Firearms) carries several variants; at one time they were the primary (if not sole) importer of Pietta cartridge revolvers that are now coming in from other importers including Cimarron and Taylors. The .38/.357 is the most popular chambering among cowboy action shooters because the smaller caliber is cheaper to feed and easier to shoot quickly. The smaller bore means a heavier revolver than the same gun chambered in .44 or .45 caliber and they handle .357 loads pretty well. With a light .38 Special load it's a real pussycat. A small caliber single action revolver is not just a modern invention; Wild Bill Hickok was known for carrying a brace of 1851 Navy revolvers in .36 caliber which would be similar to a .38 Special with a lightweight bullet. Although .45 Colt was the most common chambering for the Colt Single Action Army revolver, it was also offered (in the 1800s) in .38-40 (actually a .40 caliber round), .32-20 and .38 Long Colt. After the turn of the century Colt began chambering the SAA in .38 Special and .357 Magnum. You mentioned the versatility of the .357 Magnum revolver which is probably its greatest attribute. For those of us who appreciate Old West guns, the .38 Special works well as a "frontier cartridge", that is, a cartridge charged with black powder. It gives a very satisfying "boom" and cloud of smoke with manageable recoil.

One correction to what you said about the firing pin is it is not actually fixed. It is redesigned to prevent hammer stuck firing. Brandon Herrera did a video on this exact pistol demonstrating the floating firing pin. I've personally taken a primed round and tried to set it off by smashing the hammer with a rubber mallet and had no luck setting it off.

    • @GBGuns

I have a sa 1873 Pietta 3 1/2 Posse very nice , smooth revolver . Didn’t care for the wood grips so I fitted some Colt replica grips, black horse and eagle , whichI prefer on my blued Colts. The Wood imho, look lousy on a nickel sa revolver. Pietta and NC Ordnance make nice replica poly ivory and other grips. If Pietta was smart, they would offer a 3rd Gen revolver witha Colt 3rd Gen grip frame and US spec threads and screws as well as a stock pin in the grip frame. Would make customizing a lot easier

    @joehoward3178 2 роки тому

I recently bought on of these, and it is very well made, and for some reason, is less expensive than other Colt clones in the Cimarron line. Maybe it has something to do with the blued version having a brass back strap and trigger guard...brass being cheaper? But the nickel plated version is all steel. Additionally, it seems to come with a tuned action. My hammer pull is light and the action ultra smooth. You would normally have to pay extra for that. I had to file the front sight down on mine to correct for it shooting low, but that's common. A good gun at a bargain.

I have a Taylor and company. 357 Devil Anse 1873 and it only has 3 hammer clicks, however the cylinder pin is all the way in for authenticity unlike this one. Idk, I'd rather have the authentic 4 colt clicks and sacrifice pin size. Why they can't 1:1 replicate that I don't know.
I also noticed how not smooth the ejector rod is by getting caught on the walls of the chamber.
Mine also has that safety firing pin that moves back and forth until the trigger is pressed making it stiff. That's how they get away with making the cylinder pin go all the way in like the colts did, because they don't need the extra notch for the pin safety.

IIRC They were originally “ Revolving Pistols “. Later abbreviated. Colts were boudoir pistols which caused that company to fail. Belt model Patterson five shots were the exception, and lead to the Walker six shooter, for U.S. mounted rifles, after the Seminole wars died down. The traveling “Sam Colt’s Private firearms collection” is worth the admission price, and shows boudoir toys transitioning to Capt. Walker’s personal Colt Walker which was returned to Sam Colt after Walker’s death at Veracruz, Mexico. For me, this “revolver” is the Holy Grail of western Americana. But try to visit this exposition and decide this question for yourselves.

Correct. I believe it became the practice long about the early to mid 19th century to coin the term "revolver" to distinguish the then new repeating -revolving cylinder handgun from the earlier single shot black-powder flintlock and caplock pistols(and that's what those were certainly called, pistols) from the previous gun development period.

Cimmaron and Taylor's &co are importers of uberti and pieta Italian clones, the majority of of them are uberti ,as far as purchasing an uberti from uberti you get what they mass manufacture which is not bad but Taylor's has transfer bars which makes it safe"er" to carry 6 where as cimmaron has the classic hammer ,if you have a transfer bars you will not have the 4 c.o.l.t clicks when cocking which is a deal breaker for some people ,Taylor's and cimmaron order with custom features such as grips and hammer, ect, many cimmaron are worked over buy a gun Smith for better trigger ,pietta on the other hand is where heritage big bore orders the components for their models and are usually a bit cheaper and years ago had a reputation of not being near as reliable as uberti however I hear they are about the same today, can't confirm that though ,to import in the us a safety MUST be present so Taylor's and uberti themselves import with transfer bars and cimmaron managed to find a loophole buy making a longer base pin with a notch that can be pushed back to block the hammer allowing them to legally import near identical clones that are highly desirable to collectors and cowboy action shooters with the modelP being the most desirable and the also have a worked over competition model of the model p called the evil roy that is very well respected....I gues basically uberti,Taylor's,and cimmaron are Almost all ubertis with the exception of pistolero being pieta and frontiers also pieta ,the rest is cosmetic options from importers to suit your liking, I personally like a couple Taylor's catttlemans on the ranch and love the model p for fun,I have not yet had anything pieta or pieta parts
