- I went to the garden to pick tiny bitter gourd for dinner. This variety can be found in every Filipino wet markets. As a Filipino from the north of the Philippines, we often cook this kind of bitter gourd for our pinakbet, a Filipino vegetable stew. The next day, I saw the kakawate trees are in bloom. I picked kakawate flowers and turned it into okoy.

Memories that are worth remembering. When I was a kid, my mother always cook this kind of bitter gourd. She adds it to her pinakbet, a Filipino vegetable stew. I like it. They're surprised because, I'm one of the few kids who like the taste of bitter gourd. I grew up eating it. One of my favorites until now.

Growing up I hated ampalaya (bitter melon here in UK) and would always leave them on the side, now that I’m older and also cook pinakbet from time to time, I find it doesn’t taste the same without adding them, so I do even though I can only eat a couple of slices 😅

i was learned to eat bitter melon, although im not filipino, im caucasian japanese raised in hawaii, oahu, my mom japanese caucasian learned thru her mom and her mom's chef of filipino's and local hawaiians and caucasians how too cook all kinds of nationality of foods, i love filipino foods, all kinds especially dinuguan, balot, goto, pinakbet, balatong with paria and marungay, pumpkin with pork, long beans with alamang bagaoong...all sooooo delicious!!!!

I always watch your videos. I was amazed to see that the kakawati or madre cacao flowers are edible. When I was growing up in La Union, there are lots of madre cacao around our house but we never pay attention to them. Now I live in the US for more than 50 years already but I still go for vacation to the Philippines. Probably when I go home again I will try to taste the madre cacao flowers. Keep up putting videos that are informational.

Super delicious niyan. Sa amin it grows in the wild and super bitter than the normal bitter gourd sold in the market. We tried growing it in the yard pero namamatay siya, we called it wild amorgoso. Kaya pag may hinog, inihagis namin yunng mga boto sa mabatong bahagi ng bakuran na madamo. At doon sila lalago at namumunga ng marami. Maliliit lang at masarap pa keysa sa mga malaking uri ng ampalaya.

Freshly picked bitter gourd is very yummy salad.
Sliced it thinly and saok it in salted water for at least 30 minutes. Rinsed it with running water. Then, blanch it with boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain and gently squeeze out the water. Garnish it with sliced tomatoes, onions, shrimp paste or bagoong. Serve it with rice and adobo or fried chicken or protein of your choice. Enjoy!😋🤩
