- Are there any good reasons to rely on a 75 year old piece of history like the M1 Carbine for personal protection in the modern world? Sure, why not!? In Part 3 of our series on the M1 Carbine, I go over some of the obvious and not so obvious reasons this old war horse might still be relevant today. I also look at a couple of upgrades for the M1 Carbine that help make it more like a true 21st century fighting tool.

In my unit in Vietnam we had a full range of weapons. My Company had around a 50 officers/warrant officers and 125 enlisted men who were divided in aircraft mechanics, crew chiefs/gunners and others (cooks, mailroom, clerks and others). As a warrant officer I was issued a S&W .38 revolver and a M-16. I never had an M-16 that worked properly so I acquired an M-1 carbine. My M-1 never let me down and as my tour was coming to an end, I became a popular guy as most everyone wanted my M-1. Wish I had brought it home. Mine was a Singer sewing machine company ww-2 rifle. Found out when I got home my mother was a final inspector on the M-1 line at Singer. Her job was to disassemble, clean, reassemble, test fire, disassemble, clean and pack the rifle in grease in wax paper for shipment.

The M1Carbine is a viable weapon, 70 years later we are still talking about this weapon. If you can .....
get one. This weapon rocks. It’s good 6 inch groups at 150 yards. Combat range. You won’t need glass, it’s awesome just as it is.
Reliable, durable, accurate, easy to clean. This is one of the best weapons ever produced. I have no stake in this except helping Americans defend themselves. This is still one of the best weapons of self defense anyone could possibly own.
It's a decent rifle. I wouldn't feel undergunned carrying one in most cases, but "best weapon ever made" is defintely a stretch. I could list a thousand different firearms that are more effective. But the easiest way of saying it, is that it's not in service anymore. Because it was replaced by better weaponry. Simple as that.
@Scott Riley: Some of the ways you can get an idea of how well-thought-of a particular weapon was - especially during the midst of an ongoing war - is by looking at which weapons were coveted by the enemy, and which were picked up most often from the battlefield. Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS soldiers during the Second World War liked the M-1/M-2 Carbine so much that they often pressed them into service when they ran across them. There are photos documenting this fact, as well as witnesses. Second, when dropped or discarded on the battlefield, M-1/M-2 Carbines didn't remain "homeless" for too long. According to WWII & Korean War veterans I have known, if a discarded carbine was lying around, it wouldn't have long to wait to be claimed by someone who wanted one - but had not yet succeeded in getting one. Over six million were manufactured, but demand still outstripped supply.
I've heard a lot of this stuff about the M1 carbine, seen quite a few vids over the years. I really wanted one.
I went to the local pawn shop and got to see/handle one for the first time and I was so disappointed.
These were clearly made for smaller people. I shouldered it and I was like there's no way in hell...
I have this issue often being 6'3" 220 lbs. I see a gun in movies/ UA-cam think its badass then in real life its frickin too small.
I just couldn't have one and slap on an ugly ass extension. Maybe if there were custom made longer stocks that still looked the part I'd consider one.
With my ARs Im an all the way out on the stock adjustment kind of guy or just an A2 stock. Perfect LOP for me.
@@toki89666 - Your response to the M-1 Carbine isn't all that uncommon. Just remember, the carbine wasn't designed to replace the service rifle - the M-1 Garand - it was designed to replace/supplement the sidearm, usually a M1911 .45. It's an excellent personal defense weapon, but not ideal for engagements beyond its design envelope. The rear sights on some models were graduated to 300 yards, but really its cartridge was at its best inside 150-yards. Ideal range 100 yards or less, although HP/expanding ammo can extend that somewhat. With so many modern alternatives, some folks find that it isn't for them. Whereas others do. YMMV.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 It was generally issued to rear service support troops, such as truckers, cooks, medical corpsmen, mechanics, ambulance drivers,etc. As evidence of its lethality, in the training films shown to these support troops, they would show how it would reliably pierce the German infantry helmet.
New Jersey banned the M1 Carbine huh? Well then I shall own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my Tricorn hat and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him at 20 paces. Draw my second pistol but it misfires due to wet powder. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Smoke Alarms blaring from all the black powder used. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. I was then shot 80 times by the cops because I was holding a rifle with a bloodied bayonet.

My cousin has a friend that uses a M1 Carbine for home defense that was passed down to him by his grandpa. He even keeps the double mag pouch on the stock full.
people keep trying to tell me a M1 carbine isn't reliable. I've had mine for over forty years, and not had a single problem!!!
Agree. I have had one for years. It has increased in value significantly and have had zero reliability, jamming or misfire issues with that weapon. Have had an AR type carbine for years also, of which none of that is applicable.

I've never had these cast parts rifles EVER require any repairs or feed issues in 30 years I've owned them so far. Have had to repair most every AR platform firearm that's ever been owned by me and several others I help maintain their firearms for. Stamped parts wear and bend easily.

Give me an M1 carbine and I'll be happy. It was the weapon of the Air Force when I went in - 1956.
For close-quarters shooting like inside a house, I was taught not to line up the sights, but to simply put the front sight post on the target's center of mass and shoot until the target drops. Thus, I'm not so sure about the optic, especially if you want to play up the "less threatening gun" angle as you describe in the video.
Lucky Gunner may not always be the cheapest place to buy ammo, but I always feel compelled to buy from them in no small part because of their excellent UA-cam channel. Super fast shipping doesn’t hurt either!
My uncle gave me an 1884 Springfield Trapdoor .45-70 Govt for Christmas (off the line in 1887)...Lucky Gunner had Black Hills cowboy action .45-70 that I needed, at or about the same price as others. I was so happy to buy ammo from them after enjoying so 'manny' videos from them!

Here are some ideas for the m1 carbine as a home defense piece. 1. You have a bayonet lug, put an M4 bayonet on it. One of the known problems of a long arm for home defense is the bad guy can grab the barrel as you go around a corner. With a sharp bayonet, he will be in for a surprise. It's also useful if the gun jams, which you admit can be a problem for an m1 carbine. 2. A few ammo companies make soft points which is far superior defense ammo than ball. However, it has more of a tendency to jam on the ramp. Polish the ramp. 3. another harbinger for less jams, increase the recoil spring from about 8lbs to 11 or 12lbs.
The relative shortness of the M1 carbine is a plus for in the home. Using one of many m-16 variants as they generally are longer than the carbine. M1 carbine round is comparable to the .357 pistol round so not so overpower to travel through multiple houses. M1 carbine does not look as menacing as and AR variant, so has more better public relations image.

My carbine constantly jams after every shot. I have to constantly drop the mag and reinsert it just to load and fire the next round.

I love that M1 Carbine with the pic rail more than I should. I think reversible, sensible addons to WW2 firearms could be a really fun aesthetic. I'm reminded of the rear sight RMR replacement for the M1 Garand.

I got one (Hopco) on one of my Korean Era M1's and it makes the rifle totally modern in performance; highly recommend. I also got an aftermarket barrel nut that accepts a threaded accessory and a muzzle break; it shoots as fast as most people can do with an AR when I shoot Heavy Metal division, and en bloc clips are as good as those stupid M1A mags I could never get fast enough with.

At indoor home defense ranges, you don't have to focus through the peep, look over it a bit, and aim solely with the front blade

Not everyone is a Gun enthusiasts or hunts multiple game. Imagine someone who only hunts with a Shotgun owns no pistols and wants a compact rifle capable of taking someone down the M16 M4 is completely useless for self defence. THE US military rates all 5.56 ammo as USELESS.

That moment when you realize you have a gun for every realistic purpose you may face, so you consider what you might need in case you stumble into a Martian Kodiac Bear attack but all you can have on you at the time is a handgun, so obviously you need a minimum of a .454 Casull, but a .480 Ruger also has certain advantages in that situation, so why wouldn't you get one gun in each caliber to solve that nonexistent but also not 0% probability problem.

This has been one the most informative discussions of the .30 Carbine I’ve ever seen. Every other video I see they go on and on about it’s history. Great we already know the history; enough. I like this modern discussion of the pros and cons in its more modern role of self defense. I tell you what, I love my little .30 Carbine; so much fun to shoot.

When your government is the most corrupt many years and always in the top 3 most years, what surprise is that? I'm a NYer, and ARs, in their "compliant" modified form, are legal. All the f*cling idiots did was outlaw cosmetic features. I use mine to hunt and if someone comes into my house with evil intention, they'll run into a faceful of .300 Blackout. If my lawyer sucks so much at jury-selection that a good shoot is judged based on the type of rifle I used, then I failed at lawyer-selection.

I did something similar to my VZ58. I left the beaver barf lower handguard, but swapped the upper for a NEA, to mount a red dot.
RS regulate makes some awesome side mounts for the vz58 if you want a more refined look. But then again I have a flash light hose clamped to mine...

Audie Murphy's (the most decorated US soldier in WWII ) favorite weapon was his M1 carbine.
He used it to great effect on Germans. Of course he was an expert marksman.

I have that Ultimak rail on my M1 Carbine. Mine, like a lot of them out there is an unremarkable armory refurbished gun, and is not diminished by the addition. Plus, the old Trijicon 1x24 Reflex I have on it just looks cool (Ultimak has the same setup pictures on their website).
M1 carbine always reminds me of the LE training video where that guy basically challenges the cop to a duel, guns the cop down with m1 while eating some pistol fire, then hops back in his truck and drives off.
The M1 Carbine is the gun my dad carried the most in WWII. He carried his extra magazines/ammo in a medical pouch on his belt. Which proved his downfall. He took a round in the pouch and his ammo damn near blew his ass off. It was his ticket home and he spent 6 months or so in the hospital. Two weeks ago I finally got an M1 that at least the receiver was made in 1944. It is a sweet shooter. And I happen to like wood stocks, just me, I know modern stocks do not warp and all that but I just like wood stocks.

I'm sure that if the technology was available then, the "Greatest Generation" would have preferred a red dot on their Garands and carbines, and a light/laser combo on their .45s, maybe with night sights or an RMR. All of those only help, not hinder.
I drilled a larger hole in the close-range aperture because in low light you couldn't see well enough through it to identify your target. Works great now.
Good input and information. I always liked the M1 carbine as it’s a great all around rifle, well suited to indoors or bush action.
If its good enough for self defense in the biggest war ever, it should be fine for you in your house.
Yes up against a platoon of SS troopers armed with a StG 44's to protect the kitchen for the boys is a hard act to follow.

but it's really not "less than ideal" though. It works great as an alternative for the AR-15 as a home defense gun.
Edit: I mean dude, it has the same energy as a 44 mag out of a revolver length barrel and the same energy as a .357 out of a rifle length barrel. combine that with the 15-30 round magazines makes it a great self defense gun. It's a very light gun too and isn't physically large or cumbersome either.

However, that doesn’t mean - by any reasonable metrics - that some older weapons (stoked with top-tier JHPs) are axiomatically inappropriate for lawful citizen defensive purposes. For example, next year the .357 magnum will be 85 years old; yet, it remains one for the most potent, proven and effective sidearms for personal defense.
Normally, at this point, some individuals will raise the “capacity argument.” I’ll let the following verbatim quotation from LtCol Jeff Cooper - the founder of what is now called Gunsite and the acknowledged guru of modern defensive firearms tactics and training - respond:
“And what, pray, does one need all those rounds for? How many lethal antagonists do you think you are going to be able to handle? Once when Bruce Nelson was asked by a suspect if the thirteen-round magazine in the P35 was not a big advantage, Bruce’s answer was, “Well, yes, if you plan to miss a lot.” The highest score I know of at this time achieved by one man against a group of armed adversaries was recorded in (of all places) the Ivory Coast! There, some years ago, a graduate student of mine laid out five goblins, with four dead and one totaled for the hospital. Of course there is the episode of Alvin York and his eight, but there is some dispute about that tale. (If you read it over very carefully you will see what I mean.) Be that as it may, I see no real need for a double column magazine. It is all the rage, of course, and like dual air bags, it is a popular current sales gimmick.”
In addition, Paul Harrell reported that Cooper one said, during a class he attended: “to reload once is rare, to reload twice or more is all but unheard of.”

I have a Plainfield carbine made in the 70’s. These were guns made from surplus parts and new barrels and receivers. Or so I was told.
It’s my jeep gun and a dandy and reliable shooter.
Unless I want to Shell out for a suppressor, the M1 will be a bajillion times easier on my hearing. Surprised no one has mentioned how loud a .223 is when fired indoors.

Yeah, but .30 isn't "quieter" indoors. Less concussion? Yeah, that's why I'm getting a 9mm 'PCC/civvie smg', but you'll be deaf from .30 just like from 5.56. A few rounds of either and its ringing for days.
Side note: M1 Carbines suck as suppressor hosts; so much blowback...

I would love a look into suppressors for home defense. No one would have time to put ear protection on n'or would you want to if an intruder was in your home.
My thought on the top rail, if that existed in some manner back then, it sure as hell would have been used. So when I get a M1 Carbine, its getting a top rail.

Our experience with Mimi-14s that were used daily on the range is that they were super reliable! We had 10 designated for quarterly qualification use that we cleaned and lubed before January’s qualification that went through December without a malfunction. That’s 3600 rounds / weapon. Note; We noted that the bolts were getting sticky during the fourth quarter, but still functioned OK.
Reliability, as I'm sure you'll mention in part 4 is - at least on my reproduction M1 carbine, a matter of magazine quality.
Some other tips - old '80's/90's GI compass/trauma dressing pouches work great as a pour man's M1 carbine double mag pouch. You can also get a rail adaptor that screws into the rear sight mounting socket in lieu of the sight. Just have to make sure your optic is short, so the ejecting brass doesn't hit it.

@@j.m.8193 yea that is what gets me, how many of the mass shootings are done by someone who legally purchased the firearms? I am all for stopping the violence but the gun is only the tool, the one using it is the source of the problem. Until that gets addressed it will keep happening, even if you get rid of all the guns they will just change to another tool like a knife.

Some even got defensive with what they own as if you were imposing your point of view putting down the ARs and other more modern rifles in the market. Olongapo makes some fantastic gear. I have several of their M1 Garand pouches.
Observations: Olongapo Mag pouches were fine on my GI Stock, but too loose on my Boyd's Laminate stock, which is a much more durable option that looks classy, and preserves my GI Stocks. You need to use the included 550 cord to hold it on either stock, which is hardly something you need to buy a "custom" pouch for. They never responded to my inquiries, and include no instructions. 2 out of 5 stars.
Ultimak and Amega Ranges habdguard rails are both quality kit, but neither allows co-witnessing with GI sights; perhaps it's time for someone to make taller, aftermarket sights? Or perhaps a rail that mounts the reddot lower?

I love my m-1 carbine. It is more than just a good little rifle. It has history and a symbol of how American Industry dropped what they were doing and retooled for the war effort. The carbine has a great story to tell in both where it was made and where it was used.
It was a favorite of Audie Murphy.
Light, fast on target and the highest capacity rifle on the battlefield.
It was good for house to house fighting and close quarters in the jungle.
The original design was for it to be select fire and had that not been decided against it would have met the criteria of the first assault rifle.
Yep. If it handled multiple wars it can surly be good for modern times if it fits what your looking for. Perfect for ban states due to the bull barrel, no pistol grip and mags readily available in all sizes.
Also it would be a good idea to replace all the springs with some fresh new stuff if you are buying a vintage ww2/Vietnam used carbine. It’s easy to do and most of not all have unknown round count on those springs and something that is overlooked since most are bought and not shot much if it all.

My dad relied on his M1 Carbine in WW 2 for self preservation.
Ultimak rail for the M1 Carbine, and you can still put the original fore end back on, that is cool if for some reason an M1 Carbine was my best option for defense I would totally use that.
M1 is one of the best guns i own. If you have never heard the racking of a M1 carbine then you are in for a treat, it has the yeetiest sound out there, straight gasm to the ears
The one issue with using your treasured M1 carbine in a home defense situation is when the cops confiscate your gun while they investigate and put you on trial. Probably never get that gun back.
Agreed!! For those of us that have a number of firearms around it's better to use a cheaper one you don't care about losing for a while (or forever), but rarely do we get a choice when things get serious or time to think about that choice.

Any experience with this situation or hear say. I heard this growing up too and believed it. My experience, Used a 1911 series 80 perfect condition, maybe 500 rnds thru it. In a self defense situation I used it and got charged, went to jail, cost me thousands. Went to a grand jury and got no billed. Never tried to get the gun back. 4 years later the pd called me asking me to pick up from their evidence locker. I never tried before that because I thought it was useless. Saying that I still don’t leave any valued (inherited) ( any gun I buy is just fiscal, guns I inherited are irreplaceable and not for sale) out of the gun safe for home defense. If you do use for the right reasons you might get it back, but it will be years

I agree with your sentiment but the logic is flawed. Thousands of soldiers relied on swords, bows, muskets, bolt actions, grease guns.... exc. That does not necessarily prove it’s a good choice currently.
Not the grease gun! That thing sucked compared to the Thompson. It was the American equivalent of the Sten gun.
The M3 was a horrible weapon. The M1928a1 was a Cadillac compared to the used 1992 Honda Civic with the mismatched color doors that was the M3. I know you gotta cut down expenses in a total war, but the GIs really suffered because of it.

Might want to check Williams Gun Sight Co. for a ghost ring rear arperture ... I got a Twighlight arperture for use on a Marlin 336, and I'm not sure if they still make it, but think they used have a rear sight replacement for M1s

Williams ghost aperture rears are some of the best ever designed across a broad spectrum of iron sight rifles. They just work well...
Williams makes the 5D and the Guide for the Carbine. Both serve as Ghost Rings with the aperture disc removed, but the twilight aperture is great as well. The 5D requires drilling & tapping and the Guide replaces the issue sight in the factory dovetail. The cheap imported scope mounts that screw to a gib that’s driven into the sight dovetail shoot loose because a conventional scope weighs too much to mount with one screw. That mount also interferes with ejection. I cut that mount down to one cross-slot and mounted an ultralight red dot with it, and it worked very well but sat too high. Get the Ultimak - you won’t regret it.
i have had my m1 more years than you have been alive and i would take it over any of my other guns.

I had an M1 Carbine for years and it was a fantastic rifle for target plinking and small game hunting. A serious no fuss, no muss firearm. Lightweight, low maintenance, reliable firearm. Can't recommend highly enough. Shoot safely everyone.
P.S. I will not debate this. A shotgun will always be your best choice for home defense.

I had one and it was an awesome gun. Very accurate. It held close to 30 30 caliber bullets in a clip. It's like a 38 special hitting its target from a riffle, but it's considered a pistol.
I have an original early version M1 Carbine. The top part of the fore-end is pretty loose on mine. Is this normal or were they not loose at all from the factory?
I carried one for 3 days during the L.A. Riots back in ‘92. Comfortable to carry for long periods and could carry a lot of rounds and you could fire it one handed. For the close in urban situation it was ideal.i only carried the 15 round magazines, better balance I felt.
I would not bastardize the M1 Carbine with anything modern. It is totally reliable and as viable now as it was in combat. I’m a combat veteran and know the carbine is as usable right now as it was during its issue service time. I would use hollow point ammunition but personally prefer it as it was issued for combat. I remember them being used as effectively in 1972 Laos as were our M-16A1. Combat proven to me means home defense proven. The Laotians used it for THEIR Home defense with exemplary results using Lake City Ball. Just my two cents worth. You presented a very good video, thank you Sir!
If the GIs in WWII and Korea could have had a red dot sight and a 1000 lumen flashlight mounted to their carbines, do you think they would have turned them down? "Combat proven" doesn't mean there's no room for improvement.

@@garyelsik3376 I agree with you. At the ranges that the Carbine is designed for a red dot and rail is nothing more than additional unneeded weight. Also I am 6'3" and have never had an issue using the original sling in the same manner as was shown in the video. Along with some other issues I had with the video.

One *could* bore the rear sight out, and _thread_ it for a Skinner Peep Aperture. Leave the peep out/off when stored for home defense, screw it in for occasional range play so you'd know she'd still hit @ 200+ yds.

I finally found a post-war carbine that is reliable and accurate on my third try. Rather than shoot a home invader with it, I'll use my Hi-Point 4595 and let the cops confiscate that for evidence. Why give up a great piece of history unnecessarily?

That's a good point, no one ever talks about how your gun gets confiscated if you ever have to use it.
Patches Mercantile of Rust if you're cleared of charges you usually get it back. My uncle did. He shot two crooks breaking into his shop and killed one.
Excellent point. My main home defense weapons are a Mossberg 500 and a Glock 17, either of those are expendable and easily replaced. My military carbine or M1 rifle are not. Chances of getting those back from the police are slim and none. Their next stop will be at one of the po po houses.
I choose the High Point 995 with "Redball"® magazines for that same reason. Even if I never get it back, no big deal.
I would never pick an M1 if an AR was available...but.. Its a cool gun, and I like it even if it's obsolete/obsolescent.

I love mine. I inherited it after my grandfather passed and it’s been my favorite gun to shoot . Super light , intuitive, easy to clear, and accurate at close ranges. I find my friends leaving their ARs in the trunk for a while whenever I bring it out. Only thing that sucks is the ammunition availability, but I’ve recently started to reload the rounds , so I have no issues. Any one that talks bad about the gun either had a bad experience or are just mouthpieces from some Internet forum .

The best related question here, is when oh when is Ruger going to come out with an 8-10 inch 9mm "pistol" just like the Charger - in the takedown version of course. Then Copper Custom will make a brace adapter; add can and voila.
I'm so happy that I have MY OWN outdoor range. I feel so bad for the people that can't just step outside, and enjoy their firearms. It's not much, but I have 10 steel targets, and 3 paper target stands to practice with, but it's only 30 yards long. I've also got a 10" gong setting 50 yards away from my front porch, so that's not so bad. I was actually outside shooting TODAY. I wouldn't mind having an M1, but it's not on the top of my wish list.
I don't have any problem changing out hardware on my WWII era carbine, as long as it doesn't permanently modify the rifle in any way. That way you can always easily go back to the historical setup. Why would anyone complain about that? That rail looks handy.
Why would anyone want to use an M1 carbine for home defense? . . answer: elderly men, who have the weapon's functionality in deep memory.
it's a fine historical semi auto rifle that is also a great hunting rifle. Great for bagging rabbits or deer. And not bad for home defense.
If I lived in California I would highly consider this.

I’m sure there is some legal reason but I’m surprised that Ruger has not made the M1 carbine. I would buy it if they would make it.
I bought my M1 at a department store in 1988. It was a re-import from Korea made out of whatever parts they had laying around. I think I paid $169. I should have bought 10. I will be buried with this gun.
When I got it there were very few options for a midsize multipurpose rifle. As LG noted, I only had access to indoor ranges and the M1 was cool to shoot in them. It was great to teach women to shoot, it's so easy to handle. I added a Choate sidefolding stock to make it even more compact and it's been my bug-out gun ever since. Easy to hide, easy to carry, powerful enough, and great history. My only complaint now is the cheap ammo is long gone and it's too hard to find to make it and ideal survival gun anymore.

An M-1 carbine burns half the powder in a bigger bore hence less blast and muzzle flash. It's wooden stock almost looks apple pie. Only thing it's missing is good modern magazines like Magpul.

Another plus for the Carbine over the AR is the much reduced noise and muzzle blast of the M1 Carbine, particularly marked indoors.
