  • The Real Life of Pernell Roberts Adam Cartwright from Bonanza to Trapper John McIntyre.
Pernell Roberts was an American actor best known for his roles in popular television shows of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Georgia in 1928, Roberts began his career on stage before transitioning to film and television. He achieved widespread fame as the oldest Cartwright brother, Adam, on the popular Western series "Bonanza." Later, he starred as Trapper John on the medical drama "Trapper John, M.D." Despite his success as an actor, Roberts was known for his outspoken political views and sometimes clashed with producers and directors. Roberts passed away in 2010 at the age of 81.

Pernell Roberts was the reason I watched (and watch) the series Bonanza (he was my favorite since the first time I saw Bonanza on TV in France) I like the man he was, the liberal, the man who fought for important causes (like the civil rights, and the native people), he was different of the others actors of the cast of Bonanza, Pernell wasn't interested by money, and by Hollywood standards and it's why he wasn't understood Acting was his job, and he wanted his Life private (not the case of the others members of the cast of Bonanza) Pernell was a free lance actor, and he has had a huge career (I always think that Bonanza has ruined the possibility for him to have a great career on big screen like Paul Newman or others great American actors Pernall was a too a beautiful singer, with a real great voice, and of course he loved playing on stage. I like to watch him in his different roles, and my favorite characters are Jim Boyer (the virginian) and Greg Nelson (kashmiri run, because he is very funny in this movie), but of course I like him in Trapper, or as AC, or all if roles before and after Bonanza. For Pernell : it was his ideas first, and his career after : a great man.

Bonanza is from my childhood, when I was in Poland. We were the only one on the street with tv set at that time. Many neighbors were coming to our house just to see Bonanza. It was super fun. And it is fun to watch it now. Pernell Roberts probably didn't expect that huge impact of Bonanza in many countries. Probably he would stay to the end. Great job Adam. You will be loved forever.

@Zophia, Thank you for your wonderful comment. Indeed, Bonanza was a remarkable series. I had the pleasure of writing Pernell Roberts a Western film script, near the end of his career, when I worked in Hollywood. Pernell was a very kind, genuine individual. All best wishes.

He was also in the mini-series Centennial. I was fortunate to be able to spend the day with he and his wife when he was in the area filming and even went out to dinner with them. It was just before Trapper John.

Actually, Pernell divorced from his first wife in 1959, LONG before his son's death in 1989, since he married his second wife in 1962, his third wife in 1972 and his fourth wife in 1999. Just setting the record straight, here.

He played Trapper for 8 years, while Rogers played him for 3. Don't know why they cast him over Rogers... but it was a smart move. David Dortort found him difficult, but he later became more pliable, knowing where the $$$ was, and that he was getting older. Local stage pays very little.

@@scottliberati5137 I think Pernell was a better choice. He seemed to have more depth as that character than Wayne Rogers did. I also understand that Pernell was allowed to 'make the rounds' with several real doctors in real hospitals in preparation for his role as Trapper and to see, first hand, how doctors interacted with their patients, etc. Pernell was totally believable as a doctor. I felt Rogers was more like a cartoon character, in many ways, in the way he played his.

I had the privilege of meeting Pernell Roberts in 2005 at the Henry Ford estate where I used to work. My mother was in the hospital with cancer, and when I mentioned it to Mister Roberts who was visiting the place I used to work at. I saw.
Him walking around there because my friends had invited me to have lunch there while my mom was in the hospital. I ended up talking to him and his good friend who wrote for Have Gun Will Travel. Came to my home in Dearborn, Michigan. I know you say that he had Pancreatic cancer in 2007, but he told me he had cancer already once before. He came to my home but when he found out my mother was sleeping. He did not want to disturb her so he did not come in and he visited with me on my front porch. He was a very kind man and I will remember him very fondly.

Also he was a man that didn't wont to wear a wig😳
    Cool Actor of his art.

I have the whole Bonanza collection. Now I am on season 13 and still one to go. The best episodes were those ones with Adam. Adam was the thinker, solved problems with his head but sometimes seamed a litte bit reserved. Hoss was the good hearted and sometimes naive person always ready to help someone and take strays at home. Litte Joe mostly was the high tempered one. Always wantet go with his head through the wall. But even the odds were against him, he never backed up and he always stood his ground. Lefthanded.😁
Ben was the calm pole of the family, always tried to solve problems first in a peacefull manner.
They all had one thing in common. A high and strong sense of family bond. They stood for each other no matter what kind of odds they had to face to.
Yes it was a complete male household, 🤠🤠🤠🤠but it is not true that they had no girlfriends. They all three had several female relationships, ❤❤❤❤were even close to marriage but they suffert from the „Cartright Curse“ . 💀All their girlfriends either died on a desease or were killed.💀In the case of Adam his fiancee fell in love with Clay (Barry Coe) the fifth oft he Cartwirghts and went away with him. 😧That was it for Adam. 😕He left the show.😢

Adam was to marry Laura Dayton (Kathie Browne) but she fell in love w/Cousin Will (Guy Williams), Ben's nephew, whom she ran away with & daughter Peggy, to San Francisco. After losing her & then triumphing over evil Peter Kane (Lee Marvin) in "The Crucible" Adam left, never to return.

Parnell Roberts was a humanitarian, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama, he left Bonanza due to the show casting causician actors in make-up playing non-white roles, I think he was a man before his time, danced by his own drum beat, stood firmly on his beliefs, he was a great actor, but was denied the opportunity to farther his acting career, I chose to remember him for his humanitarian work.

@@rustyrules4264 No, he didn't. He was always a very private man, who hated the tabloids, and would rarely grant an interview. Because of that, they resented him, but knew 'Pernell Roberts articles' could sell magazines for them, so they just made up a LOT of stuff about him, and printed it anyhow. Sort of like today. Hence why so many people think like you do. But he got along fine with Lorne, Dan and Michael. He just felt the writing could have been far better, and more interesting storylines could have been made if the brothers were allowed to marry etc. He didn't like the fact that three grown brothers were still doing whatever their Pa told them to do, and were sometimes treated like children - the opposite of what he was actually told the show would be. He felt he wasn't allowed to grow in the role, so he left.
Many actors would, and have .

On another YT video, one of the show's directors recounts, in detail, the nightmare that was Roberts' ego-driven whining about how Bonanza was holding back his destiny as an elite movie star, how the only thing preventing him from silver screen glory was his TV contract. One night the director said enough was enough and called him on his bluff and released him from his commitment. Roberts was stunned, his agent tried to patch things up saying he didnt really mean it, so an agreement was made to let him finish the last six episodes of season six on the condition he do his lines and otherwise shut up. The writer pointed out Roberts film career never reached stardom. He was a B level actor at best on the big screen. Fans could take him or leave him. Can't think of a single film that was great because of him. Sad because he was good as a TV regular.

Wow - You don't seem to know much about him ? He never went back to Bonanza, even though David Dortort - the producer - had left that door open if he ever wanted to : he knew how popular Pernell was with the fans. But even Pernell admitted - after several years of guest roles on other TV shows, and stage acting - that he went back to episodic TV ( in his lead role in Trapper John MD) because he admitted he liked that stability to be able to pay the bills, save for his future, and be able to eat regularly ! And there's nothing wrong with coming to that wise conclusion.
