Love the sarcasm along with the info! How can you not love popcorn ceilings, shag rugs, burnt orange-avocado green-harvest yellow appliances? Bring back the 70's--NOT!
Surprising just how satisfying it was to watch that stuff get scraped off on the "Painters Pole Cam"
I am RUNNING to Home Depot for one of those taping knives!
I’m running there tomorrow
This was so satisfying to watch lol. These horrible pop cirn ceilings.
Round the corners of your preferred scraping device to avoid gouges
Very satisfying.
🤣 solid video!! Thanks dude!! Saved me so much time and hassle PLUS gave me a laugh!!
A nice trick is to use pliers and bend in the corners to avoid any nicks in the paper that can happen. Worth sacrificing the knife
Glad I clicked on this! Even though I'd decided this was the way I'm going to do my newly spared, spare bedroom XD, you are funny as all get out! Definitely following now because funny people are funny! :-P
Love this! I’m planning on putting shiplap over ours. I hate popcorn ceilings too!
Kewl - I did stripes on my youngest daughter’s room too. Getting ready to scrape the ceiling and paint over it now that we’re empty nesters.
Thank you so much 😀
I really enjoyed this video
Carmel Corn - so good!
Always do the asbestos check prior removing popcorn! Even if popcorn have only 2% of asbestos this technique wold contaminate your entire house with asbestos( The concentration is not high, but we are tolling about long exposure possibly decades of breathing air in hazardous environment.
It's not anthrax.
We have a 1978 bungalow and knew that the popcorn ceilings were going to be a nightmare preceding a major Reno. After getting a professional testing done, people might be surprised to know that the popcorn was negative but all the drywall mud and tape was positive. Ended up getting it all professionally abated for piece of mind.
Awesome!
Thanks!
I have a steam cleaner, with a wallpaper-removing heating attachment...might work better than spraying water?
Do I use the same technique with spiky ceilings too?
Please, it would be appreciated if somebody can answer.
Yup... popcorn ceilings are a pain, you hit that one on the head. Good show, thanks.
Thanks!
What if you have those long droopy peaks? Painted too. No vinegar?
How much more work is it to get the ceiling smooth now? I bet a ton more work.
My entire house has popcorn ceilings. 😩 I just want one of my living room to have a smooth ceilings so I can paint. But it’s a high ceiling. It’s going to be fun. NOT! Thanks for this video! Very helpful!!
Did the same thing two years ago.
Will this work on orange peel texture/regular walls? We are working on re texturing some walls in a really old house, and this would save us some money as opposed to purchasing an electric drywall sander........
You do need to mention in your vid, that the reason wetting the popcorn down is important has much less to do with ease (just as easy to push it off dry!), but more to do with safety. Wet ceiling texture falls. Dry ceiling texture floats as inhalable particles in the air. Ceiling texture contains asbestos (aka silica). And a mask is still 100% necessary!!!!
Asbestos was pretty much outlawed in 1978. This house was built in 1988.
No, its literally for the ease of the job😂. If its painted, just forget it.
I want to remove ours in our bedroom. I noticed that it is nothing but a cobweb catcher as well. On top of this, I have bad allergies and I am hoping by getting rid of this, my allergies will improve.
ha! Ha! I have been impacted by this since I was a child...
Will this work on a popcorned concrete ceiling
It’s really easy to do…. Just very messy. But to get that hideous crap of the ceiling makes it all worthwhile
Yes. I don’t understand why they ever applied popcorn. It’s easier to just tape and mud the ceiling.
Is the popcorn ceiling the same as the stippled ceiling
MISTER HAXMAAAAAAAN KEEP IT COMING this good and quality content Im sure this is going to become a big channel, dont forget about us when you hit the fame hahahaha GREATINGS!!!!!
Thank you so much! You are too kind.
Best intro lol
I'm literally 5 minutes from doing this. Plastic laid, stuff moved, sprayer full. Had to take a break to find the willpower to get it done.
Beats all the other videos, bar none!!!
Is it just water ??? Looks so satisfying 🥰
Yes
What do you recommend for early 1970s popcorn? Full bodysuit, respirator and hepa filter?
Get it checked for asbestos first. Then if positive for asbestos...get a professional.
@@anombradoful after 3 months of waiting for a response from you, I went ahead and removed it, now I’m dead.
@@toddpacker7058 That happens. Dead can be fixed, though. Check with a local lawyer and see if you can sue the builder.
Why didn't you wear the full body suit with HEPA filter and professional waste management company for cleanup?
Great video but shows alot easier than I'm dealing with. I have 2 coats of paint. I have tried vinegar and hot water and still not getting under the stipple. Should I use a chemical to break the paint down. Your thoughts. Any suggestions?
I used hot water and fabric softener to remove layers of wallpaper. Might work on the ceiling?
Search it on yt, I saw someone whack off the tips of the stipple with a metal putty knife, before spraying. This broke the "shield" of the paint, and allowed the hot water to penetrate thru the the holes in the paint, making the hole thing mushy and come off
Yeah once it's been painted, you are screwed. We put sheetrock up over it!
lol was this a circus house ha ha wow those walls
Hi there, what to do if removing the popcorn on the ceiling and there’s taping on the dry wall? Just remove it and retape? Or it is okay to remove and do a skim coat after? Thanks!
Hopefully you can remove the popcorn and still leave the tape. If you have to, just skim over the tape after.
@@HAXMAN gotcha! thank you so much for the fast reply!
Do everything in your power not to damage the tape
My house is from the 70s. How do I make sure there isn’t abestos
Add a vacuum hose from your shopvac to the underside to a flattened tin funnel and suck that crap up as it falls. Or use a dustpan with the hose attached taped to your handle and catch it. that way...
What do you do to Finnish the ceiling after scraping the popcorn? Just paint?
It depends how smooth the ceiling is. You might be able to or you might need to touch up rough areas with sheetrock mud and then paint.
@@HAXMAN Would Kilz paint do the job if nothing has been damaged?
What you sprayed first? Just water on ceiling ? 😅
Yes
Heard this song a while back but cant remember it dangit
Do you have to tape off the walls? Our plastic and tape keeps coming off after we spray with water.
I don’t if I’m going to paint the walls.
@@HAXMAN ok perfect. How wet do you get the ceiling? Do you spray it all at once or small sections?
@@jellyfishhh440 I spray big sections and then I spray close to where I’m scraping again. It just helps get it softer.
Now that it’s off what’s the next steps before painting?
If there are any bad spots touch them up with sheet rock mud and then paint.
If you round the edges of your scraper it won't gouge the cieling :-)
Don’t nobody want no popcorn on their damm ceiling!! Damm Right!
Painted popcorn is a massive pain in the butt.
Indeed.
after i do this, i can paint it any color i want?
From waht I gathered in the comments, first use plaster or drywall mud to give a nice smooth ceiling surface, then paint. Easier than anything popcorn!
Thoughts on asbestos in older ceilings?
My understanding is that Asbestos health problems, much like Roundup health problems comes from massive repeated exposure. People don't get asbestosis from a single exposure, but from repeated exposure over months or years, as in working at a factory that has asbestos blowing all over the place. Wetting the popcorn ceiling also reduces the number of fibers that gets into the air. The painted ceiling was actually the best because it all stuck together for the most part. That being said, I would recommend using a respirator, blocking of you air vents and any doorways have a fan blowing out of the house through a window or door in the room. I would also recommend using one of those full body paint suits with a hood, and throwing it away immediately after use, then washing your clothes (Do not try to shake the dust off of them!) and taking a shower immediately after use. While I believe most of these health problems are overblown, there is still a risk, and why take a chance if you don't have to.
@@MAGAMAN i agree with your entire comment actually
My popcorn was painted it did not come off this easy. (Only the one little patch in a closet that was not) I had to buy a special stripper for painted pop corn. It was a huge pain in the butt it would have been better to tear the drywall off looking back. Also alot of popcorn up untill the 90s probably has asbestos in it. Just somthing to be aware of.
It was banned in 1977.
Yeah, my house was built in 1961. No idea when the popcorn ceiling went up though, so I need to have it tested before I try this.
DIY Duke suggests just using more water on a painted ceiling, and one of his viewers suggests adding some vinegar to the mix.
90% water 10% distilled vinegar for painted.
@@DavZell Asbestos actually managed to sneak in through many products sold through the 80's despite the "ban," so anything older than 1990 probably ought to be tested.
Any issues after the fact when mudding, if the water used had a squirt or two of dish soap?
I don’t think it would hurt
90% water and 10% distilled vinegar especially if it's been painted.
It look like he did a good job. But in some cases Popcorn is not that easy to get off. In some cases you have to skim the ceiling are shave it with a machine.
I'm going to remove it 🙂 🙃 😪
At intro I thought we will hear that long awaiting confession that you are coming out of closet
Plastic on the floor makes it easy to clean it up with or without floors 😂
What worries me about this is that a lot of popcorn ceiling has asbestos and lead. So breathing in and spreading all that debris is a real problem. Potentially dangerous for the person living there and for the people doing the work.
That's actually why you spray it. He didn't mention that. When it's wet enough, it falls straight down and isn't released as small breathable particles. But a mask is still supposed to be used!
Be sure to have the popcorn tested for asbestos. It is not expensive. I think I paid about $30.
Ignorance is bliss. Just wear a mask and you can avoid the regulations involved with asbestos.
@@chucksblacksmithing9499 If you or a loved one was diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
@@synhasian5 lol
Do they put asbestos into new builds? I thought that was something to worry about if your building was from the 70's or earlier, not anything relatively modern.
@@goldengryphon yes 1980 and newer and you're good
It is not as easy as he makes it look. I promise
How easy is it? Maybe your ceilings were painted? Maybe there was something else going on? If there are any things I should watch for before I get started, I would love to know!
😂
First thing you needed to do is get that popcorn checked out by lab to see if it has Asbestos in it, that's most important thing that you failed to mention Mr so yes there is a reason an excuse not to remove the popcorn till it's been tested for asbestos.
You said water....what product did you use? I tried water, I tried a mix with vinegar and neither worked
Just water. Get it real wet and let it sit for 3 mins. It will come right off. I'm doing it right now
If you put plastic on the floor peter to scraping that would be a much easier post cleaning job
Then you gotta sand it
But what about the test of…asbestos??? Debby downer asked.
Freaking HATE popcorn ceilings!!!!
Ok first you should be wearing a mask 😮. Would this work on a wall? Not sure why they put popcorn on the walls but they did 🤷♀️
No N95 masks; hopefully the camera guy is wearing one.. does the water remove or make the asbestos inert.?
This house was built in 1988. There is no asbestos.
Asbestos
It's not popcorn it's called acoustic
Secondly if you have a spray rig use it with warm water. The way the guy in the video shows is very slow process
Can I give jou my adres 😂
Fantastic! You are Freaksterical! 😂
Great Tip on how to remove the most "God-Awful"😱 and "BFU"🤬 Disgrace to Home Design..."The Dreadful Popcorn Ceiling"!😝😫🖕👎🫢
I'm definitely going to try your method.
