You should have added more pressure to see if it will start letting some air out past the designated pressure of 15 psi. That's how you know that it is not stuck.

I'm sure it does. Just didn't see the procedure in the video. Anyway, I will be replacing a defective radiator that destroyed my head by blowing off the upper radiator hose (new rad & bad bad fitting design). Been down for a year and finally just got it running. Not sure, but I suspect the cap isn't releasing at rated 13 lb. So when I replace cap, still want to test new one. Would make me feel a lot better after experiencing thousand dollar plus loss not to mention time. Would auto-part store have such test equipment?

  • @Hinapulan

It would have been more interesting had you pump that pressure tester a bit way passed the 16 psi benchmark to see what happens after.
That would have simulated the coolant passing through the rad cap pressure release valve to the coolant reservoir tank, if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks anyways. Still a very useful video 👌

the top seal under the cap keeps the coolant system sealed? if that seal is leaking you may not get flow back into the radiator when the system cools creating the vacum and instead will allow air to be pulled into the system.producing an air cavity

klowny1969, good video, but as I was watching your video I was expecting you exceed the rated 16 psi of the cap with the test pump in order to demonstrate the cap actually releases the excess pressure and stop at 16 psi. Also, if your stant tool is capable or using other vacuum pump tool otherwise, I was hoping you'd demonstrate the opposite - vacuuming - to simulate the scenario when the coolant cools, and vacuum release action of the cap kicking in. I hope you'd do another video to show these 2 actions, which are the main tasks of a radiator cap.

I have a 1993 Chevy Truck. My radiator is on 1year old and I have a small leak on the top outlet on the left side. I patched it with some JB weld and it stopped for a week and restarted. I put a new hose clamp on at the top left out let but I still have a small leak. I noticed that my radiator cap has a lot of pressure on it when the engine is cold after 2 days sitting. I have to refill the over flow tank every 2 weeks. The engine has never gotten hot. Do you have any thoughts on this. I will replace the cap, it is 6 years old. Maybe the pressure is building up and causing the antifreeze to seep out of the top hose. This may be the heater hose. Thank you.

I recently bought a 1989 Cadillac Deville 175,XXX miles. i've been replacing parts for it over the past month, everything seems to run well EXCEPT the cooling system. Yesterday i was driving for about an hour when i began to see white smoke (steam) coming from under the hood, im assuming it was coolant that landed on a hot engine part. Then the coolant began to pour on the ground, not all of it is gone but it did spill a significant amount. The coolant was gurgling & the car part next to the resoivar was shaking even though the car was off. when turned on the fans inside the car also turn on on its own & it begins to make the interior of the car smell like coolant. It's not the first time this has happened. any advice on what i should do or part to buy? please help.

+Antwain Geffrard If the gasket is fine on the cap then it should work..
Expansion tanks in a radiator capless system have air vents.

The smell of plastic may be the sign of a bad radiator cap?

You left out testing for the cap not relieving pressure when it should.

Every plastic radiator cap tester Ive used sucked. I just ordered a met one. Used the plastic one on five different 16 pound caps and all the leaks come from the adapter. Highest I could pump and cap up to was 10 pounds. Then I watch it drop real fast. Put it in water too and watched the plastic adapter leak

Wow, watched all that for a 30 second way to test the cap and nothing about testing if spring is too strong.

The tester doesn't use heat so neither does the cap nor whatafuck.

What would cause my water pump outlet hose to burst(split in half due to excess pressurization), It's on a jag I have had for 7 years replaced the hose 5 or more times in the past 4 years. I have not blindly replace hose every time I add something else like 1st time hose 2nd house and clean old therm 3rd hos, new therm, and radiator cap, ect. I ran all the basic and I don't believe its a head as the hose will take anywhere from 6 months to a year before and when I did a block test (the hose was still busted) I didn't see any indication of exhaust in the coolant.

could be malfunctioning radiator cap or incorrect pressure rating of cap. Get a factory OEM cap from dealer or call and ask what pressure rating factory is and replace with matching psi cap
