  • This was my home away from home- I worked here from 1991 to 2000 (leaving for 3 months in 1992 only to come back as an official projectionist). The video camera used here wasn't mine, and I was a little nervous about bringing it so I didn't shoot as much footage as I would've liked. This was a weekday afternoon so there weren't a lot of customers and the staff mostly slacked that day.
This theater opened in 1989- the Century projectors were bought used, they look like they were from the 1950s. All 6 theaters had Dolby CP-55s in the beginning, 2 were later upgraded to CP-65s with SR, but upgrade to digital sound was a bit slow. None of the screens had it yet when this was shot, in 1996 DTS was installed in 2 of them, then over the next few years the other screens got hand-me-down digital sound systems from the company's other theaters that had either upgraded or closed. Recently 4 of the film projection systems were replaced with DLP.
At the time this was shot, the company that owned the theater was rather small, known as Harris Theater Group, then Holiday Cinema Enterprises and then Signature Theatres after they had done some major acquiring and expanding. That company was then sold to Satan, AKA Regal Cinemas. In 2000 I actually left this theater (getting bored with 6 screens) to work at Regal's 16-screen Natomas Marketplace which was their first theater in the area, but left after a year because of their ridiculous policies where they cared more about showing advertising than the actual movies. I couldn't believe it when I heard they'd acquired my old theater.
As you see in my other video, the projectionist also had to run over to the single-screen theater about 2 blocks away- this made the job a lot more fun, and it was an extra challenge when learning how to run the projection equipment.
Read my comments on daviswiki.org for more info about this theater- I probably know more about it than anyone else on the planet.

I've been working at this theater for almost 3 years now, but I've been coming here since I was a child. To see this video is a nostalgic rush and I remember when these films were playing.
I've seen many movies here that have gone on to become modern classics and fondly remembered ones as well, not to mention less fondly remembered, like Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter. But I have so much history with this place, and to see it as it was is just such a feeling that's as close to traveling in a time machine as I can get. Thank you for this.

I started working there in 1991, but rode by many times when it was being built and was at the very first public showing in December 1989. Having six GOOD theaters in Davis was a huge deal back then. I took a lot of pride in putting on a perfect show every time. It's sad that the Regal Nazis took it over- ironically I left this theater in 2000 to work at Natomas Marketplace, but left after a year since it was clear Regal did not care about giving customers a good experience. The digital projection system has a few compromises that make it inferior to film done properly, and I've pretty much given up on theaters now. I'm at least thankful for the memories- I still have dreams about running film.

This is some great footage you took. Nice to know it's been preserved for future generations to enjoy.

This was one day before I was born haha.
    Such a simpler time.
3:10 I laughed when you said the theater had over-priced popcorn haha. If only we knew how expensive it would be over 20 years from now.

And only because people keep paying it. I've given up on theaters entirely now, without film it's just a big TV and I've already got that at home.

I can see your point. The only time I go to the theatre is if I have a good feeling the movie is going to be good, or if someone invites me to tag along and they are paying.
I still always sneak food in. Popcorn in the theatre in Canada is almost $10!

You said this Theater opened in 1989. And you said you attended the very first public screening. I'll take a guess was it The Abyss?

It wasn't finished yet when The Abyss came out, but that played at the single-screen theater (which is now gone) which I show in another video. This theater opened on December 22, with only 4 out of 6 screens finished, it would take another couple weeks for them all to be open. The first movie that started, which I saw was "Blaze" with Paul Newman. The other movies playing were She-Devil, Family Business and War of the Roses.

@The10285dollars Movies shown when this was shot were: Clear and Present Danger, Forrest Gump, The Client, The Lion King, It Could Happen to You, and The Mask.

Why didn’t you show the projection room of the auditorium that showed the mask?

What was the recommend volume for the theater sound?

  • @TheMediaHoarder
    @TheMediaHoarder  13 років тому +1

@sygo7g Sadly that's probably true- nobody else loved working here as much as I did- I was sad to leave, but the pay wasn't very good and the new theater I went to gave me a lot more work to do as it had 16 screens instead of 6. I don't think the current staff knows anything about this theater- if I were in charge of hiring I'd require them to name the first movies that played here! Though I wasn't hired til 1991, I did attend the very first public showing here too!

I was working here at the time, nights mostly, I think. Otherwise I'd probably be harassing you for a video from your collection to borrow. Were you there for the employee screening of Star Trek: Generations? When the new woofer blew out at the beginning of the film? Good times. What a crew we had. You were hidden from all of the madness upstairs. Lucky you.

Were you the one who borrowed my tapes of copied stuff? I’ve since amassed a collection of literally thousands of legitimately bought movies, and those copied tapes look terrible on current equipment now.
Mike left as manager in 1998 and his replacement was a real bitch who caused a lot of people to leave. I stayed until 2000 and got hired at the 16-screen Regal Natomas, which was a lot of fun with so many screens but they were a horrible company so I left a year after that and went to work for Tower Records til they went under. Ironically Regal now owns the Holiday Cinema, which is still there after 32 years. Of course they now run digital instead of film. I don’t even go to theaters anymore.

@@TheMediaHoarder Mike's replacement was WORSE!? 😳 Wow. I thought getting hit with candy when the count was off was bad, but she was worse?! Mike was hands down the worst manager I've ever worked for. The crew there was pretty fun. I worked there with my gf. Made lots of friends. Watched tons of films. But horrible as a workplace. The customers were terrible. Some of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had, and I've worked at two coffee shops. Davis... 😂. I saw a wiki about Davis and the theaters' history, and they still have all of the same problems. Nothing changes. Oh yeah, the first VHS copy of a laserdisc I borrowed from you was The Abyss. Good times. Sure, the quality wasn't great, but it was good enough for me at the time. I was just happy to watch hard to find films and the different cuts some of them had. The Abyss Director's cut is special. 🤩 Thanks for the memories!! Hope you're well!

@eyeh8nbc I often rode by on my bike as this was being built too- it took more than a year for it to be finished. Hopefully someday I'll be able to buy it back from the Regal Nazis!
