Uniseals to create watertight holes in the barrel. You need 2 one for the clean out and one for the overflow. - amzn.to/2WOtdp7
2" PVC pipe for overflow and clean out- amzn.to/2Vfhuzc
2" PVC Ball valve for clean out.- amzn.to/2Yo8sB9
2" PVC 90 degree elbow- amzn.to/3zJzS21 (attach to the overflow so water in directed down instead of jetting out into the stream. You might also like to get another to help lift water off the very bottom on the clean out pipe.)
PVC Glue- amzn.to/3Bz38Jt
Flexible 1 1/4" PVC pipe. - amzn.to/3mXPZFD ( To move water from the pump to the filter) 25ft should be enough but it will depend on where you position the skimmer in relation to the bog filter.
1 1/4" PVC 90 degree Elbow X 2- amzn.to/3jFpR0r To help connect pump to the flex pvc and filter barrel.
1 1/4" PVC pipe rigid- amzn.to/3teHDe6 (this is cut to the length required of the barrel. This is the pipe that runs from top to bottom inside the bog filter barrel)
1 1/4" PVC t piece fittings- amzn.to/2WOxeKd (To help disperse the water at the base of the filter.)
1 1/4" PVC Check or No return valve - amzn.to/3BBmqh7 (To prevent water from siphoning out of the filter barrel should the power go off).
Bucket to create skimmer- amzn.to/3BI3bmp (Doest matter what type of bucket or container as long as it can fit the pump you choose)
Submersible pond pump Low volt DC- amzn.to/3yKtTbY (This is a different pump to what i used in this pond, however i used 4 of these pumps on my dream pond build and have been really happy) The transformers need to be kept indoors or protected from weather. They can easily be extended if need be. This video will help if you need to extend the low volt DC cable- • Plumbing bog filter| W... . If you wish to find another alternative anything that delivers around 1000- 1200 gallons per hour will work fine.
Matala filter mat- amzn.to/3mXVEeR (Cut to size to sit over the pump in the bucket)
Waterfall foam- amzn.to/3BBp46D (To seal cracks and crevices when creating the stream. Can also be used to seal gaps in the rocks used to create the skimmer)
Pond flocculent- amzn.to/2WOBSYF (To clear up muddy or cloudy water)
Beneficial bacteria- amzn.to/3mXXOet (Beneficial bacteria to kick start the ecosystem)
I think that's it for all the plumbing, pumps , underlayment and liner. Now you just need the rocks and gravel but all that information was in the video on how much was needed etc. Plants you can get creative with or use the video and pick some you liked.
I hope this has been helpful. I did make a playlist when i built this pond that might help if you want to construct this or something similar. Im still pretty terrible at making videos but these were some of my first so they are particularly bad! • Budget ecosystem pond ... - Навчання та стиль
Ha first. I discovered your videos and subscribed last night..I going to be doing my first pond soon and I'm in the process of researching..your videos are really help full. Definitely going the route of diy and I like your bog filters. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Welcome aboard Christian. Glad the videos are helpful.
Great video Kev really enjoyed this one the pond looks incredible can’t wait to see it through the seasons 👍
I’ll get a heap of impatiens in a week or so. The lilies are starting to emerge. The marginals are waking up! Exciting times 😀 I want to move the little Pygmy perch up to the dream pond and have heaps of little colourful fish in the pond this season, I should get them in about a month 👍
love your nature pond, Kev. and the lay man way you explain how you did it. thanks for these ideas, mate.
Happy to help 👍
WOW brain over load. love it super info. must watch again.
I will definitely make this as my reference whenever i make my pond in the future. Very nice presentation.... thanks!
Great stuff Teddy 👍
This video is excellent. It is so helpful and pretty much covers everything. Thanks very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a lot Kev for your help and clear explications 💪👍💪
🍻👍
Can't state enough how much I am loving your video's❣
Thanks mate. You really are binge watching everything. Well done 👍
@@Ozponds No, thank You! You've done all the research for me & all the effort. I'm now really looking forward to my first build now that you have granted me the confidence.
I recon you’ll do a great job 👍
I like your videos before watching it because i know is gonna be good 👍
Thanks mate. I hope it didn’t disappoint
@@Ozponds never brother i always enjoy👍
Thanks mate you’re a legend 👍
Nice work!!👍
Your Bog filter explanation sold me for my patio ponds. Running 3 months with 0 fluctuations in water parameters. I even pour plant fertilizers in a test 0 nitrates within the hour! incredible!
They are awesome! So glad you’re happy 👍
Great video
How can I like this video twice?
😂
I have watched all of your videos Kev
You are crazy! Well done 👍. How did I not bore you to sleep?
@@Ozponds never ever been bored and I watched some a few times yes!
Legend 👍🍻
Hello Kev! Thank you very much for your videos! You are the reason why I will build my first pond. I am sorry, maybe my question is stupid, but do you put oxygen pump in the water or just the tubing? 8:25
Great and beautiful pond. Simple concise explanation. Thanks.🙂 Gonna built one up myself soon . Gonna use an IBC as a bog filter and willy bin as mechanical skimmer filter. It would be just slightly bigger. Just a quick question. What is the regulation regarding the depth of the pond before you would need safety fence? Thanks again for the great informative video👍👍👍
Depends where you live. In Victoria where I live there is currently no requirement to fence a fish pond of any depth. But regulations change all the time. I always recommend just sending an email off to the local govt then you have a written response for your records 👍
Love your channel! The venus flytraps should come back, they actually need a winter dormancy. There native here in the US, I belive there found in North and South Carolina.
Thanks Zaid. Yes it does look like it’s coming back. 👍
Ho Kev, thanks for your clear vidéos. I'm motivated to do my frist pond with your recommendations next spring.
I have one ask about localisation the water pomp. It's not à problèm to position it not in the deeper place the pond?
No not a problem. If worried you can add an aerator to circulate water on the bottom of the pond.
Excellent video, i`m thinking that my inherited 12000ltr pump might be a be heavy, luckily i have inherited seven pumps in all, i will be starting my pond next year and i am hoping to have a down flow wetland filter/intake bay at one end and a bog filter/waterfall at the other, do you know how geraniums would go with wet feet like the begonia`s?
I’m not sure I’ve never tried them. Let us know if you try it. 👍
Really good video (as usual). I like the way you've highlighted the plants, makes it so easy to see which is which.
I'm wondering how low the temperature can get in your winter, and will the plants in your various bog filters still be taking nutrients from the water? In somewhere like the UK our plants tend to go dormant over winter so I'm guessing they wouldn't necessarily be able to utilize the nitrates etc.
Winter air temps as low as -5C. Water never freezes though. The plants in the bog go dormant. I’ve been reading a lot about anoxic filters lately and I think in the bog zones are anoxic (different to anaerobic) very low oxygen, this allows nitrogen to be converted to gas and dissipate in the air. I assume this is what is happening cause I always read zero nitrates even in winter.
@@Ozponds Thanks for your informative reply. I started out reading about anoxic filtration which led me to bog filters, hence on to Ozponds! The anoxic/biocenosis system looked "technical" what with having the perfect cat litter and all, while bog filters seem more natural and do-able, yet both systems rely on a similar balance of bacteria. Maybe I'm drawn to the plants!
Well I love bog filters as you can tell. I’ve got 6 ponds with bogs all are crystal clear all year round. 👍
We are planning a garden pond project of our own, and I came across this video, it's so helpful! Definitely need to watch more of your videos as they seem super informative :) Out of curiosity, how often do you have to clean a bog filter? And are there any types of ponds/filtration systems that don't require cleaning?
Once a year I clean the bog filters. Most small backyard ponds will need some sort of maintenance.
If you make a big bog filter (wetland type connected to pond) do you still need gravel on the bottom of the pond? I really don't want to put peebles in the bottom of this upgraded pond. Thanks you.
No you don’t need to have pebble inside the pond.
Great videos Kev. I watch many of them and got inspirited to make a pond as well. I would love to connect my swimming pool to the pond, so the water would get cleaned the natural way, not with chemicals. I live in Canada, just outside of Toronto (in winter we can get temperatures as low as -25 C.) The pool's dimensions are: 11.6 x 5.4 m and holds around 90 m3 of water. The area that I'm planning to make the bog, stream and pond is roughly 8 x5 m, but it could be bigger if needed.
Do you think this is a good idea?
I do. It’s something I want to do myself one day.
Thanks Kev. I will keep you posted.
Do you need a fence? I think in my state, NSW anything deeper that 30 cm you need a safety fence
G’day Lisa my understanding for NSW is no need for a fence but you will need building approval to go deeper than 30cm. I always say people should email their local council so that you have any requirements written down for your records 👍
What is the easiest way to add the bog filter to an existing pond that has a skimmer. The water from the skimmer come out through a small drip water fall. i also have a large waterfall that is supplied by a pump that's in the pond.
You need to size the bog properly and have the flow rate in the right ball park. Then it’s just a matter of having that flow run through the bog and the water returning to the pond. It’s easiest if the bog sits higher than the pond so that gravity returns the clean water to the pond. Ive got plenty of videos and there’s plenty of other people also.
@@Ozponds So, do you mean to have a pump submerged with an intake and outake on the bottom of the pond and run that pipe to a bog outside of the pond that's raised? In your video the installation is on a new, empty pond. Mine is 17'x18' and full of Koi. I already have a bog running the length of the pond that has gravel in it, but i recently found out that after a few years it will be full of junk and there's no way to flush it since it's a ledge in the pond. It's part of the pond.
You should always have a method of clean out. I’ve got loads of videos that talk about design and implementation. Very hard to describe in a comment. This one might give you an idea on how to create a clean out port. Bog filter in a stream| DIY Pond build

Awsome stuff mate, new to your channel and about to make my first bog filter using your design!
(Not related to this video) but for my pond im using an old wheel barrow and the sides a quite sloped how could i add some shelves to the sides of the wheel barrow?
Just some rock walls back filled with some gravel would do the trick 👍
@@Ozponds thanks 👍
I made a filter after seeing Kev's "Bog in a Barrel" video. It was a lot of fun and it works really well. My water has never been so clear it's almost invisible.
Love it Geoff. Works every time 👍
@@geoffj3191 yea im using his design in a small storage container for my small pond, cant wait to see how it turns out
Mate what's the shallowest bog filter possible? Can I go shallow and really wide? You rock
My mini bogs are only about 15cm deep. So yes you can go shallow, but just make sure that the water can evenly distribute throughout the bog. Also make sure the flow is slow enough and that the solids can be captured and removed easily. Hope that helps 👍
@@Ozponds mate all your videos are awesome. You're a super kind and humble guy. Thanks for educating and inspiring me. If I was the dalai lama or buddha, out of all pond youtubers, i'd choose you to make and look after my pond. Its your peaceful energy bro xxx
😂 thanks mate. Appreciate the support 👍
Hey Kev what are the cheaper alternatives to the waterfall foam and where can I buy them
If your in Australia just Bunnings normal yellow expandable foam. That’s what I recently used on my stream build for the dream pond.
I used the foam for my aquarium scape between rock and before they cure, I would stick some pepples and coarse sand to make it look natural. Over time they blend in much better as they turn brownish as compare to the black foam which is much more expensive.
Great tips 👍
@@Ozpondswill the foam make the fish sick or is it all the same?
I’ve only recently tried it. But many others have said no problems at all. There’s heaps of tadpoles where I’ve used it so hasn’t affected them at all. In the next month or so I’ll be adding fish.
How could the pump be 460 liters an hour but 1200 gallons an hour if liters are smaller than gallons ?
No pump is 4600 litres did I do a typo?
exactly how do plants around ponds get their water? additional plumbing to them? im always so curious as how they survive because its never explained in any pond video ever
I’ve got a video on how I plant mine. The plants surrounding the pond are planted into the ground (I don’t water them, just whatever they get from rain). Other plants are inside the liner and planted in gravel they soak up water from the pond.
🐟🐠🦐
My measuring system is superior.
😂 only if it involves plucking eyebrow hairs and using them as a unit of measure. Then yes, yes it is 👍
Hello Kev! Thank you very much for your videos! You are the reason why I will build my first pond. I am sorry, maybe my question is stupid, but do you put oxygen pump in the water or just the tubing? 8:25
Pump is outside the water, tubing runs from pump into pond and there is an airstone on the end of the tubing. Pump need to sit higher then water level and most need to be kept out of the weather/ undercover.
