Watching from the UK and it’s imaginable for someone like me to understand how scary it is for you all. I teach 5 year olds and they all want to help and save the wildlife affected by the fires! Hope things ease off!

@Trousersnake Pliskin Idiot, that doesnt make them any less dangerous. Also, some are worse than others.
And no, it's not "Mother nature makes these fires", that's just some oversimplified truth, that becomes wrong because it's so simple.
Entire species get wiped out, if you don't get that this is bad...

@Trousersnake Pliskin If you think the Greens somehow have the magical ability to enact laws despite not and never have being in government at any state or federal level then you are clearly brain damaged.

Guys, when everything went yellow-orange on the camera it was actually blood red. It looks totally different in person as most cameras automatically try to colour-correct.

I live in Melbourne, and I could see and smell the smoke, it is so bad.
We really are so grateful for these fire fighters who are putting their lives at risk, and saving these fires for us, I think we should take some time to appreciate that they are doing this for all the people who are involved in the NSW bushfires.

I'm in the mid north coast NSW. We packed up to evacuate 3 times. Like you, the fire virtually did a 360 around us over a month. It got into the dried peat of the wetlands. Everytime the wind came up, the ground was on fire again. It only stopped with the rain, then it was flooding. I appreciated your video for the honesty, raw emotion, and just plain truthful, straight up documenting of your experience.

Those trees that burn like that are called Widow Makers. It's really terrible on the firefighters because trees like that will just collapse at any minute. They are what kill a lot of firefighters when it comes to putting out flames in a lot of brush.
Thank you for putting this up for us to be able to see your experience from the other side of the world. Prayers from the US East Coast.

    • @FishingAustralia_au

even in a wind they can just drop a branch it doesn't have to be fire, i have been standing talking to a friend and a branch fell about 3 meters from where we just moved from it was big and more than likely could of killed us so i have seen this happen ,,,,, thanks for your comment and watching ,,,,,,, i thought only Australians would know this term widow makers

    Just stumbled across this video.
As a QLD Rural Fire fighter I have to say I Appreciate the effort to share this with everyone. I was not able to put my name down to help out this season as our small brigade was down a few members and we too have been busy chasing fire.
You mentioned "Back burning would of helped, its not going to make much difference, if anything it will help it". I don't know about down south there, but up here in CQ we live by "more fire on the ground is never good." Back burning is your last resort, especially in those types of winds. you could start a back burn, the wind changes direction and now crews and the residence are in danger earlier.
If you were to back burn those hills at that time, your actually making the fire front bigger, and when that fire meets the already growing wildfire, it increases the chances of spot fires because the merging of the two fire fronts is going to throw embers up into the sky and carry them making things worse. I believe this is taught in FMS (Firefighter Minimum Skills) but I learnt this back when it was called FM1.
I have been a volunteer fire fighter since i turned 16. In 13 years I've seen the fires getting worse, the last 2 years have been the worst. As you stated, Back burning needs to be done, but people like to apply for permits to burn when the fire season starts which is the wrong time. Property owners need to wake up and back burn during the colder months, the slower the fire burns, the more effective the back burn is. Property owners should also realise that Brigades are there to help. If you request help to back burn your property, the will help. If a brigade helps with back burning, make a donation to the brigade/s that helped. Those donations help alot, in fact we finally have a new shed after many years fighting council, getting grants and fund raising. our shed can also be used as an evacuation center if needed now.

ooo wow thanks for putting your hand up to come down and help
      ,
when i mention back burning there are 2 house on that headland across the river they have a river frontage of about 50M maybe 1 or 2 KM behind them there is a fire front maybe 100km long the wind at the time was blowing towards these 2 house West and back up the block towards the fire, the wind with in the next couple hours was going to turn and blow to the East which meant this 100km front was directly coming our way, i agree less fire in these condition is better but as i say in the video if it was me id more than likely back burn just before the wind change for it could not make it worse
      ,
you are correct in all what you say and the fuel load has to be dealt with in the months its safe to do so
      ,
also what gets my back up is how our parliament is set up which leads to the government doing deals with 1 or 2 people to get things through and in return have to vote with them, some of this people that hold balance of power get in with as little as 4K votes, this has to change in my book

I was due to travel through Nelligen in December 2019 to visit family in Batemans Bay, but couldn't get through via the Clyde, this was before the fires even reached the Bay. I used to live in Nelligen, its just surreal to see this footage but being a largely bush community, it's always on the back of your mind that a bushfire for the area would be devastating, so having A bushfire plan is vital.

One of my daughter's lives a short distance from you and it was scary for me in the UK as well as for her; I spent New Year's night sending fire updates to her because her internet was down and her phone signal was too poor to access the RFS site. Later there was a fire 1km from her but fortunately she wasn't impacted at any point - I'm so relieved for her but so sad for those that were, and for those that lost their lives.

Hey mate hope you're all good and you've had some rain, just want to let you know the Greens party have had no control in parliament or councils, meaning they are not responsible for the accused back burning policies and green litter. They barely have one seat, which means they can't do anything.
I'll be happy to send you some articles and stats through if you would like, but you'll find that hazard reduction burning(back burning) was 203 800ha in 2015-16 (during labours office) with 8900km of fire trails maintained. Then during liberals office 2016-18( and similar in 2017-18) hazard reduction was recorded as low as 88 136, with maintained trails "N/A". That's around 115 000 hectares different between the two parties. Take this information as you wish, but there's a serious misconception of the greens. They're currently pushing parliament to introduce traditional back burning methods for preparation for the future fire seasons. It's good to check facts before we all yell names, and I'm guilty for that as well.
    Ned

@@FishingAustralia_au its not just the greens though, all our state governments are to blame..... every state has made cuts to the fire fighting budget. and back burning is actually really hard to do, you cant just go out and do it whenever and when in drought with winters with not much rain it makes it harder. in victoria they had a control burn get out of control and destroy houses and that was in the winter. its a lot more complicated then people might think.
anyway im not going to get into a debate about it because frankly i dont care for the greens party myself. but it annoys me when a major party like LNP come out and put the blame only on the greens. honestly everyone is to blame right down to district councils.

    • @comeatmebro3229

@@FishingAustralia_au i know what you need for fires, we have had them here as well, im just saying that a lot of people are throwing around the blame and not taking responsibility themselves the national LNP party is blaming the greens but earlier last year when the election was coming Labor come out with a policy to build a fleet of water bombing aircraft for Australia so that we dont have to borrow them all the time, the LNP said we dont need one, the NSW government cut the budget to FRNSW and the RFA, the same happened in Victoria and South Australia with there respective fire services.
then we have the big one everyone keeps throwing around, burnoffs to lower fuel loads, yes there are fuckhead protesters who protest against it (thats got nothing to do with the greens party) but they have actually had a very small effect on burnoffs, the reason burnoffs have happened less is because you need very specific weather to actually do it safely and with the drought we have had its made those conditions happen less, you need rain and no wind to do burnoffs safely and we just havent had the weather to do enough. when you burn off in the wrong weather even in the winder it can be deadly, in victoria a controlled burn got out of control burnt down houses and killed a fire fighter and that was in the middle of winter.
our politicians and councils are too busy throwing the blame game around and should instead each be taking some responsibility..
