  • A court in Vietnam has upheld the death penalty for the woman behind the nation's largest financial fraud case.
Real estate tycoon Truong My Lan had appealed her April conviction for embezzlement and bribery. She stole more than 12 Billion dollars in a bank fraud scheme. The court said that her life could be spared if she pays back three quarters of the stolen funds.
For more on this, we talk to Michael Tatarski who's a freelance journalist based in Ho-Chi-Minh-City, Vietnam.

Death seems extreme. But 12 billion is enough blur the lines between treason against a whole society. In an economy the size of Vietnam it could lead to immeasurable suffering or even many deaths. Meanwhile, here, we cant even enforce a fine on the Sackler family for illegal drug dealing opioids through their corporation. And the deaths of thousands upon thousands. We have to stop pretending white collar crime is victimless and non-violent. Its hard to feel any sympathy.

it doesn't matter what will happen to her, it's about setting an example, that's true meaning of punishment & law. Do you really think jail time & community service can change a person, no, it acts as a detergent to future criminal, to show them what will happen if they dare to carry out such an act. The west can take a page out of VN & China's book of dealing with corruption.

There are times when i wish our rich and powerful would have to face equal harsh laws, especially when news about their latest tax evasions come to light or how their lobbyists make it so that they do not have to pay taxes in the first place. Besides the social boiling kettle waiting to explode produced by such unjust laws and regulations that lead to plutocracies or oligarchies, it is also understood that when social services are underfunded, systems crumble eventually and many are aware how and why that started even though there are some of the rich who may try to direct blame towards scapegoats, gaslighting minorities and such. If the system isn't working anylonger for the people, then it will eventually also fail to work for the elites.

Vietnam justice system in this case is more advanced than all Western countries. The scale of the money robbed from country where people incomes are extremely low justifies her conviction and sentencing, and unless the country able to claw back most of the money stolen to me is justified. The so called white collar crime of this magnitude for exceeds even murders of violent crimes.
