- Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce urgent plans on Friday to tackle the overcrowding nightmare in England and Wales prisons.
Emergency measures might include letting some prisoners out earlier than planned. Mahmood will warn that the overcrowding, labelled "catastrophic" by the Ministry of Justice, demands "immediate action" to save the justice system from "total collapse."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer admits the problem is "worse than I thought" and is furious about dealing with this crisis so soon in his term.
At the NATO summit, Keir Starmer blasted the situation as "unforgivable" and blamed it on "gross irresponsibility" by the previous government.
Alex Phillips speaks with former prison governor Vanessa Frake and political strategist, Peter Barnes.

Dont you find it odd that our government doesn't release figures on nationalities/race and crime, but we can confirm that Albanians who are conveniently white and predominantly Christian are the biggest offenders. Like i said it doesn't match what i see on a daily basis.
It might be a deterrent if foreign criminals were to serve their sentence in prison in their own countries.

Don't worry about eu courts just deport if they want to get solicitors let them get them from the country they get sent back to but they can't because they wouldn't get legal aid and for family life there wife and kids can go with them so they will have family life
In many countries deportation is standard procedure for those who commit an imprisonable offence. We wouldn't have an overcrowding problem if this was done.
I don’t understand why it’s ok for France and Austria and Denmark and Australia to deport these people - but not us. Were becoming the dustbin for the world. ‘asylum seekers’ get denied asylum in Europe - then come here and get allowed in! It’s INSANE.

Alex Philips is a woman that I truly admire because she is not afraid to voice her opinions when something bothers her. I often find myself wishing that she would pursue a career in politics and become a member of the Reform Party.

I don't think she's the right person for a career in politics. There's still the stigma attached to her online nude photo's. She's an annoying loudmouth and if her top gets any lower it will be round her ankles. I think she's trying to create a cleavage that's not there.

All this is been going on your years, i worked with a fella 14/15 year ago, his brother worked in a big law court in London, one Monday morning ,there were 3 prison places left in the whole country ,40,000 thousand are foreigners, deport them, problem solved

Put Capital Punishment back onto the statute as a deterrent. Even if it is never used, the possibility that it could be used, should deter some criminals from acting.
And with that reduction in crime ...
The streets will be safer and the prisons will be less crowded.
There will even be a saving in costs, and in Police time and resources.

@Permissiontospk Your conspiracy theory is invalid. Anyone serving life in a maximum security prison is already effectively disposed of for any government's time in power.
Weirdly capital punishment in the US costs more money than life imprisonment. It doesn’t work as a deterrent as in states in the US that ban it often see a reduction in crime.
Focus resources in locking up more dangerous criminals for longer and rehabilitation for other prisoners who have just made silly mistakes and can turn their lives around.
@@1rickslater Apparently in USA convicts can spend several years on death row before their execution. So there is the cost of both the execution AND a long prison sentence.
There should be 28 days to file an appeal to be heard within a further 28 days and the sentence to be carried out 7 days after the decision.

Human rights again. We all know that foreign criminals, terrorists and lawyers benefit from human rights, but how do law abiding British citizens actually benefit, who could not benefit equally well from ordinary domestic legislation? All proponents of human rights seem to be able to come up with is 'rubbish', ridiculous', 'your trying to take away our rights', or they just throw insults rather than construct a valid counter argument. No one has even done a study in to all the human rights cases to see whether they have actually helped someone, who could not just have ben helped via an act of parliament.

prisons in the UK are 5 star hotels, compared to those in the middle east, I know I worked in one, the smell and the brutality is terrible, you could send offenders to serve there sentence in the middle east, anyway prisons are not places of comfort they are there for a deterrent.
If they are going to release prisoners, it aught to be done logically, they need to let out the non violent prisoners first, ( like the pensioners who havent paid their tv licence ! ) white collar crimes that dont threaten regular citizens. No violent prisoners or terrorists should be released at all. If there are phones in the prison, surely theres some sort of devices that could jam them ?

Hard labour, no TV's, playstations or kettles in any of the cells, daily calorific intake minimum to be fed to them on a daily basis, time added on for bad behaviour rather than being reduced for 'good' behaviour. Prisons should be a place to fear ffs' not a place to meet up with your lowlife mates for a few months before being let out to carry on where you left off.

This former prison governor sounds about as bright as a Toc-H lamp. The causes of prison overcrowding are manifold - and not likely to be diagnosed correctly by those 'can't see the wood for the trees' people involved in the 'business'. First of all, there are certainly many people locked up who shouldn't be - and whose incarceration serves no useful purpose. Secondly, too many of them shouldn't even be in the country, let alone in prison. Thirdly, drug misuse is at the heart of prison problems and that needs to be seriously addressed - even legalised in some cases. It's not just drug misuse that is the problem, but the whole business of what's involved in acquiring them - from the petty crimes committed by addicts to the dangerous antics of the major dealers and racketeers.
What's wrong with employing the prisoners to build new prisons and think of more hard work for them.
They seem to be bored in prisons and think how to be difficult for the guards, instead of working hard and having no time to think. They should themselves improve the state of their cells and prisons in general.
On a side note…The government is flying in immigrants into Cardiff RAF base in unmarked passenger planes that have had the dhl decals removed!
