Hey guys, its finally ready, took me quite a bit of time putting this together, and it's been weeks since i started on it. Today then its finally time to look at what i think are the main 6 things you'll need to develop to become a competent pilot. There's a lot of subjects to cover, and i hope i wont overload you too much with info ;) work on one or two things at a time and you'll make progress no doubt. Hope this will help to get you guys more kills in war Thunder ;) If you enjoyed the video, do like, comment and subscribe. It makes a big difference! :)
Energy management is important, i agree, but i feel that situational awareness and Positioning are King to any other skill. If you have this mastered you will almost always be in the right position, and from that position you can attack, and also recover from many of the mistakes in energy management you might make. For me Situational awareness and positioning are the foundation on which to build everything else. Decision making comes as a close third. After that its fluent. but these 3 catagories are 60-70% of your success as a pilot.
3-4 kills per match on avarage is very high, because for every one kill match you need a 6 kill match to balance that out. you might be one of the best players in WT with that avarage.I still stand by my opinion ;)
you can also check your avarage kills per match and k/d ratio on thunderskill. my frags per match sits at 2.1 per match, and my kd ratio sits at 3.6, with a 59% win ratio, giving me a 75.9 score for rb. i've checked all the major youtubers at some point, orange doom has 2.8 per match, kd ratio also 2.8, with a 53 % win rate, which also gives him 75.9. you cant find magz as he doesnt fly with his own name. but others like mikegoesboom, napalmratte and others like that can be found on there. no one has above 2.8 per match on avarage.so like i said 3-4 frags per match is very high. better then any youtubber i think ;)
RB is not particularly hard. You just have to get to know your plane a lot more than AB requires you to. I still prefer AB in general, because of the little annoying things, like spotting exploits with orders, wing rips and excessive overheating in certain planes, bad teams, etc.. But other than that, it's the same thing.
@@InitiateDee Idk., when i play RB, i usually either sideclimb or just try to climb above my team, which usually gives some opportunities for kills when they are engaged in low altitudes or by the ones impatient enough to dive on the first targets. This doesn't always work ofc., sometimes your teams will just die in the first few minutes, sometimes you're outclimbed by someone who went afk. for half an hour. It's usually easier with a plane that excels in one thing, or several aspects; Thunderbolts, Bf-s (from the F4), Cobras, Mustangs and maybe the late Spitfire models might be better for getting kills. I sometimes fly too defensively to play it safe, try to get the enemy into a disadvantegous position and bnz and that might be something you might not want to do if your aim is a higher killcount, so you might need to rethink the role you want to give your aircraft and how that fits your playstyle. Like Jengar suggested, knowing your plane and knowing the enemies plane matters a lot and probably most at the point you decide to engage and it's always a good starting point while figuring out how to approach the situation. When i have some interest in a plane, after i spade it i look up its flight characteristics in the wiki, watch guides about it, etc., which gives a general idea about how it should be used, after that it's just a matter of experience. Some planes got a designation, sometimes even the wrong one and that doesn't always mean they have to be used that way. (or other vehicles for that matter; looking at the swedish bombers, the ZSU, some self propelled ATGM-s, etc..)
I find it noticeably easier to actually *hit* things with Universal, personally. XD Ironically all the flashy stuff from the tracer belt really distracts me and messes up my aim. D:

@@jengar6258 true, but i also wanna be able to fully control my plane via wasD even when im looking around. and didnt you say that being able to control your plane whilst looking around is very important?
Wonderful video! Excellent content. Another hint about situational awareness is use the mini map! Other than 'all the time' I look when attacking at about 1.5km, just before hitting where you are not able to look around with the mouse. Mini map is really handy with clouds too as enemy can pop out and the mini map gives them away first.
Yes agree with that. Most important point out of them is the know what you're up against. For example, don't go head on with a J87 D5 especially with pods. But people do time and again hehehehe
Hi Jengar, I've been watching your videos to improve on my ARB, I find them very educational. One question I have: how do you avoid over-Gs? It seems like you rarely go beyond 8gs in your videos, is there a way to limit it? Thank you!
Man ur skills and most importantly, voice sounds like a real ww2 veteran!By the way nice vid.It points out a lot of mistakes i do such as not paying attention or not zooming when engaging enemies
Hey jengar I need help, So I play on Xbox and I basically play the same type as pc but I can’t use my elevator by itself. I can move my wings, and my pointer but that’s it. (Lack of joy stick like things) can still fly pretty well but never win dogfights. I primarily play f6f 5n and fw 190 a4 and early 109s I am working towards p51. Any tips for me other than this video? Thanks so much I just want to get a good plane and good skills with it. Thanks
That is the video I was waiting for ! Thanks, Jangar ! But I have a question: how do you lock the mouse camera (default as letter C) ? Its quiet impossible to pilot with WASD keys plus C pressed. As workaround I've changed my camera mouse activation to space bar :). By the way the video is marked as Dutch language, so are the captions. English is more comfortable when reading instead of hearing (on subway, at lunch time, etc.)
hey dude i really admire the way u fly at your planes.. may i ask u a question? how long have u been playing this game?? cuz i suck at this game and btw thanks for the tutorial man.. new subscriber here
np wendell, glad the tutorial helped! i've been playing for 4 years+ But you can become a more then competent pilot within a year or so, depending on how much time you have, and how willing you are to look at your own performances critiqually ;)
btw i just played this game like a month.. and i can only get 1 kill in RB and most of the time i crash my plane to the ground when im diving im using C.202EC.. is that good or not for a begginer?
Hey Jengar... do you think you could do a video on how to use mk 108’s... specifically in the me 163 where there is low ammo and faster targets. I seem to have a hang of it... but then sometimes I just lose it.
I'm getting better, thanks to watching your videos. I'm still a terrible sick with no finesse, but I'm a new Xbox player, what can you expect? Thanks for the videos!
Great video, excellent commentary. Pleasure and ueful to watch. I got a challenge for you. Did you know that you can turn the target lead indicator off in arcade battles? Its a lot of fun. Try it and make a video, maybe more people would be interested in flying like that :).
Hey Jengar, my problem with the game is not getting kills, but getting stuck in sticky situations that usually lead to my demise. For example, I can't get rid of somebody on my tail or another plane shoots me down while I dive towards another target. I think my problem is the camera but it's really difficult for me to both move the camera and control the plane with the keyboard at the same time.
I know thats difficult, you'll perform worst then usual first before it gets better, but once you do lean you'll make your way over the barrier which saperates the good pilots from the excellent pilots. And i take it thats the step you want to make, you have to persist with practicing it a lot.
This was surprisingly insightful even though I'm a veteran. Having said that I have a request for a following video - the Seafire Mk XVII or the Seafire FR 47. Both these planes are barely covered due to their somewhat broken status (engine is severely underperforming) and I think it would be great if you put your two cents on them.
Thanks Jengar for excellent video with many good advice! Inspired me to challenge both my patience and skill by playing just RB for a while. With mixed success so far. For sure RB is much more of an team game than AB, and level of some squads are indeed very, very high, not easy being loner on generally diving team:-) . Though sometimes they are not at so clever and everybody dive early, also on opponent team, and even beginner can rack up some kills. For sure being a conservative player ("5-0 is good") in AB for 3 years helps. A little wish: can you have a new, RB look at the premium Yak 9 M , which i find absolutely excellent at BR 3.0. Of course with some weakness in diving and ability to take damage, but it is nimble and climbs like rocket! Maybe even a video with your favourite from the hangars, your favourite RB plane for each BR step?? My best advise myself? "enemy on friendly tail is allways the best target, so search for slightly exposed teammates"" and for the teamplay; "two divng after an enemy is (more) than enough" :-)
Cheers mate, glad i could inspire you to this endeavour :) should be fun! the yak9m is on the list, but will take a while, i've got a lot of stuff to do before then ;)
So THAT'S how it's done?? No WONDER I keep getting fucking shot down. Now I go away and practice these words and then, next year, I shall start to make videos!! Nice one mate, great stuff and all in one packet as well. Good stuff!!
Ha! Ha! Nice one. I KNOW how much work goes into compiling videos and respect to you and all others who take time out to publish (and all the pre - publish shenanigans that it entails). If you haven't tried it then it is easy to be ignorant of the process (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) but to make something that is both tangible AND enjoyable could be described, quite appropriately, as a 'dark art', sometimes stretching way into the early hours... Like I say, fair play!!
situational awareness on ps4 with only the controller is so difficult in planes, BUT as far as tanks go, I have become very good at. Great video as always Jengar
I prefer conversion on 400 or 500 meters. I cant aim well so shooting on ranges is waste of ammo for me. I also dont shoot whenever i can but i prefer waiting for perfect moment and then landing few accurate shots
Another great video. Could I ask if you could a make a tier 1 video, because that is where the frustration is. Most of the plains are not nearly as good as the ones your showing here.
A lot of my issues with war thunder is that my plane can never do what the enemies does, say a p47 vs a captured one and I'd still get outclimbed and dived on, climb with japenese planes, nope americas already above you waiting to boom and zoom somehow or planes that aren't manoeuvrable in the slightest like the il2 could simply out turn me. Or the best joke I've heard in a while getting outclimed in a spitfire.
Jengar there's very little information about climbing faster and the strategies i devise for myself get me kiled, out of the battle long enough for my team to be killed or my team genuinely doing stupid stuff like sitting on a runway before we've captured it with enemy planes inbound and expecting a helldiver to fight off a zero swarm.
I don't get shot down often, I have situational awareness, I am a very good pilot in RB and simulator, I am kinda good at energy fighting and I can outmaneuver even spitfires quite easily, I use 109s. But my problem is, I about to go for the kill and i set everything up nicely, but i rarely get kills bc there's always some people always swooping in and stealing my kill and then i get called a noob for not getting any kills or just having a bad match, people steal my kills so often.. any solution ?
this just cannot happen always mate. it could be your aim, jou need to finish them off in 2-3 passes max for others not to get shots in. do you have good framerate?
Hey Jengar, I just got the FW-190-D9 and I think it's going to take a very long while to spade this plane. Being that you've to be very disciplined with B&Z with this plane, and being that it's stock, I'm foreseeing a painful spading process. I'm thinking that the engine mods would need to be done first because this plane does NOT climb well stock. Do you have any general tips regarding dealing with stock syndrome and quickly spading? What about taking the plane into RB? I've read that the best place to spade a stock vehicle is in AB, but I noticed that the rewards in RB tend to be higher. What are your thoughts on this? I could always just buy some premium time, but I'm trying to wait until October for the sales. Last year, I bought a year's worth of premium. I suppose I could do that again, but I'm wondering if there's other ways that are as effective as buying premium time.
nothing is as effective as buying premium time. ab and rb are pretty close, it really depends on wether you're much better in one mode then the other. Performance is more important in rb though, in ab its less critical, so i've always prefered to spade in ab ;)
I have a different way of getting a ton of kills- playing arcade! :D I kinda struggle at RB because it feels like I can barly control my aircraft. However in AB, I feel more free and I get about atleast 5+ kills at average. Many of u might say I suck, but u need to realize that arcade and realistic are way different and that you're good at RB won't make you a pro at AB.
Thanks amigo ! I don't understand everything (I'm french) but... I understand the main thing, I think 😅. A big Thanks and good luck for the future !!! Fly well... shoot well 🛩 👍
Its not that i dont want to, i dont have time to be on there, i barely have enough time for my squadron. having an 18 month old boy running around takes amazing amounts of time from your scedule ;)
Nope, activate camera with c and take over the camera with the mouse. Then fly with the keyboard. You need to practice this in testflight. takes a while before you get it.
@@jengar6258 I find when I just use the keys my plane doesn't turn as tight, like when I push my mouse to the edge of the screen and use keys, which just ends up getting me shot down...is there anyway to make a video showing us your control setup and key usage while still showing the match? I have seen a video or two like that, where the keys are shown on the screen, but not sure if it is something you can do. I know you probably don't have the time, but I think a video like that, with the in depth explanations given here for tactics would be so much help to us newbs. Regardless, thanks for the tips, I enjoy your content and reviews. You and long5hot are my go to's for plane reviews.
I play on a PS4, and the issue I have is not being able to free roam to see where the different enemies are. I have to maneuver around with the camera just to be able to see the other targets and it throws me way off my game. And my Crews are very low level.
My main issue is that I fly with joystick and my camera can't do a full 360 but 180 each side and that's multiply the looking around difficulty making looking around such difficult
Literally... I never shoot people down. I always hang low, and intimidate them into a boom and zoom by going straight at them, breaking, and forcing them to loop. Usually they hit the ground before I do.
Great tutorial Jengar! You cover all the important parts that most pilots often tend to forget. In the 4 years that i've played War Thunder i've really noticed myself improving a lot, leading up to the point where I would classify myself as a "skilled pilot" often scoring multiple kills per match. This is the reason why I adore playing War Thunder so much. It takes skill to shoot down other planes and it takes time to develop that skill, hence the reason why it is so satisfying to do so. As always, cheers and keep up the good work! I know you spent a lot of time on this one ;)
1:35 "You should always look around for targets, both allies and enemies" Ahh I see what you mean, Allies are kills aswell afterall. Thanks now I know how to get more kills right from the start! haha
hehe, funny man. its of course so you know where allies are so you can plan your exit routes accordingly, and use your allies when you have 2-3 enemies on you and you need some help. Can be the difference between surviving or dying.
@@jengar6258 Yeah, thanks a lot for this tutorial, I played a ton of warthunder but tanks only so I am getting used to flying now. This video helped a lot!
Great stuff as always. Hey I got booted from the squadron for inactivity again (it's only been like a week though, WT should allow for longer away times...unless it's cumulative and just playing one game doesn't help), so sent in a application request. Thanks.

@@jengar6258 true, but i also wanna be able to fully control my plane via wasD even when im looking around.
and didnt you say that being able to control your plane whilst looking around is very important?
sure, min max to what suits you best i would say ;) C key works fine for me, but good that space works good for you!
In the chat at 10:15 somebody says: "I just turned all red and died". That happened to me too and it was caused by spike in ping and packet loss.
hmm, that sucks ;)
Wonderful video! Excellent content.
Another hint about situational awareness is use the mini map! Other than 'all the time' I look when attacking at about 1.5km, just before hitting where you are not able to look around with the mouse. Mini map is really handy with clouds too as enemy can pop out and the mini map gives them away first.
Ty mate :) Agreed on the mini map, i forgot to mention it, i worked with bulletpoints for this one and talked mostly from memory.
Yes agree with that. Most important point out of them is the know what you're up against. For example, don't go head on with a J87 D5 especially with pods. But people do time and again hehehehe
Yeah, got that in there too, planeknowledge, very important.
Hi Jengar, I've been watching your videos to improve on my ARB, I find them very educational. One question I have: how do you avoid over-Gs? It seems like you rarely go beyond 8gs in your videos, is there a way to limit it? Thank you!
This was the best WT tips video I watched I love yur channel that's why your my favourite WT YT your so relaxed and chilled you've helped me so much
Ty sir, glad to hear it :)
Man ur skills and most importantly, voice sounds like a real ww2 veteran!By the way nice vid.It points out a lot of mistakes i do such as not paying attention or not zooming when engaging enemies
glad to hear the vid was usefull to you mate! :)
Hey jengar I need help,
So I play on Xbox and I basically play the same type as pc but I can’t use my elevator by itself. Thanks
This was really informative, thank you!
glad to hear it mate!
English is more comfortable when reading instead of hearing (on subway, at lunch time, etc.)
hmm, i'll have to look ito that dutch thingy ;) activate the camera with c, take over and control it with the mouse.
I'm a WASD pilot and I'm definitely fine with using c. You just gotta get used to it.
hey dude i really admire the way u fly at your planes.. may i ask u a question? how long have u been playing this game?? cuz i suck at this game and btw thanks for the tutorial man.. new subscriber here
np wendell, glad the tutorial helped! i've been playing for 4 years+ But you can become a more then competent pilot within a year or so, depending on how much time you have, and how willing you are to look at your own performances critiqually ;)
btw i just played this game like a month.. and i can only get 1 kill in RB and most of the time i crash my plane to the ground when im diving im using C.202EC.. is that good or not for a begginer?
getting a 1 to 1 k/d ratio isnt bad at all for a beginner, and for the c.202EC, it has severe compression in a dive, make sure to pull up early.
@@wendellestrada9546 How are ya now?
Do you have any tutorial regarding the shells of planes? Which one to take for bombing hunting which one to use when I fly a bomber etc?
no, didnt do one on that yet. Good suggestion.
Hey Jengar... do you think you could do a video on how to use mk 108’s... specifically in the me 163 where there is low ammo and faster targets. I seem to have a hang of it... but then sometimes I just lose it.
Apart from your terrible trigger control 😂, you’re the best pilot I’ve ever seen in action.
Cheerios!
Hey man nice vid! Very good explanation!! Helped a lot!
Glad to hear it! :)
I played this on my speaker loud so I can hear it when I’m playing so I can learn and try it while I’m in the game
Good stuff, you need to give yourself the time to take it all on board. Keep at it.
@@jengar6258 thank you😁
Thank you for this video. Any tips for first person battles?
you're welcome, i have no tips for sim, as i dont play it.
I'm getting better, thanks to watching your videos. I'm still a terrible sick with no finesse, but I'm a new Xbox player, what can you expect? Thanks for the videos!
Excelent, Jengar !
Thank you very much Renata, glad you enjoyed it! :)
I’ve watched this vid 4 times now in an effort to improve !! Cheers!
want more kills with 50 cals? Don't use stealth belts, they aren't doing damage anymore
i'd have to check that, havnt used a lot of stealh on the 50 cals lately.
Great video, excellent commentary. Pleasure and ueful to watch.
I got a challenge for you. Did you know that you can turn the target lead indicator off in arcade battles? Its a lot of fun. Try it and make a video, maybe more people would be interested in flying like that :).
Cheers mate, i might try that out. I knew it but never tried it out ;)
thanks fam this helped a bunch
np mate! o7
Can do :) their on the to do list!
great video ,helps a great deal - thx Jengar!
Glad to hear it Kim, and you're welcome! :)
A quick, ahem, overview of all the things i know are required to become a very compentent pilot. Was a lot of work putting this together ;)
Ha! Ha!
Cheers mate ;)
this is a great vid very helpfull and i love the dutch accents man
Thank you.
I’ve been really struggling in RB since I played arcade everyday. I think I’m a ok dog fighter but my aim is 🤢🤮
np mate, keep at it!
situational awareness on ps4 with only the controller is so difficult in planes, BUT as far as tanks go, I have become very good at. Great video as always Jengar
R3dNeckRevolution YT Exactly, the sticks have so many dead angles, its so difficult to do it right.
I can imagine that tbh, get a mouse and keyboard for your ps4? ;)
I prefer conversion on 400 or 500 meters. I cant aim well so shooting on ranges is waste of ammo for me. I also dont shoot whenever i can but i prefer waiting for perfect moment and then landing few accurate shots
Fair enough, and wise to know thy limits, and then work around it! o7
Im always fly with the c key to look at my enemy, i will release the c key and try this thanks jengar
Another great video. Could I ask if you could a make a tier 1 video, because that is where the frustration is. Most of the plains are not nearly as good as the ones your showing here.
When I hold C I still don’t have free control of my plane. It still just wants to go where I was aiming before I hold the C key
Hey bradley, fly the plane with the keyboard, you can then move the camera freely without using the C key.
Or the best joke I've heard in a while getting outclimed in a spitfire.
that may be due to you as a pilot, work on your skills one by one and you will improve and get rid of this feeling!
Jengar there's very little information about climbing faster and the strategies i devise for myself get me kiled, out of the battle long enough for my team to be killed or my team genuinely doing stupid stuff like sitting on a runway before we've captured it with enemy planes inbound and expecting a helldiver to fight off a zero swarm.
thank you! subbed.
np mate, glad to hear it! Welcome aboard :)
Thanks Jengar great video !!!
Cheers mate :)
Around 7:20 u shot down green fury haha
yeah ;) only time i met him.
Hi Jengar was just wondering if you could show us your keyboard layout and settings for sensitivity etc? Thank you great videos
Hey Jengar,
I just got the FW-190-D9 and I think it's going to take a very long while to spade this plane.
OK then. I just bought a week of premium, just enough to where I should be able to at least get the engine mods. Thanks for the tips.
Do you use left mouse button to shoot machine guns with cannons simultaneously?
yes. i always shoot both at once. More lead in the air, more chances to remove someone.
this has helped a bit cause im getting more points per match if i balance my assists and instead get kills i think ill do fine
thanks
you're welcome!
Ab and RB are indeed similar, but still different. Both take skill to master!
Thanks amigo ! I don't understand everything (I'm french) but... I understand the main thing, I think 😅.
A big Thanks and good luck for the future !!!
Fly well... shoot well 🛩 👍
Great video but I'm using ps4 and we'll camera work doesn't really work so, any tips for ps4 users when defensive flying?
Hey Jengar! Do you plan on having a discord server for your community or at least a Steam-Group?
I have a discord server for my squadron ;) thats enough distraction for me tbh :)
Alright then, if you don't want you free to do so, keep the good vids man and if ever need some help on the ground you can call me
Its not that i dont want to, i dont have time to be on there, i barely have enough time for my squadron. having an 18 month old boy running around takes amazing amounts of time from your scedule ;)
Naaah, no worried Jengar, better be a good father rather than a popular gamer ;)
Also, congratulations for your child!
How do you do that with the camera? My game never looks like this and I don't know why. Is it enemy tracking camera?
Step 1: play bf109-E1
Step 2: P R O F I T
roger that!
I have a lot to learn
And i want to learn because i love this game
I play on a PS4, and the issue I have is not being able to free roam to see where the different enemies are. I have to maneuver around with the camera just to be able to see the other targets and it throws me way off my game. And my Crews are very low level.
My main issue is that I fly with joystick and my camera can't do a full 360 but 180 each side and that's multiply the looking around difficulty making looking around such difficult
Literally... I never shoot people down. I always hang low, and intimidate them into a boom and zoom by going straight at them, breaking, and forcing them to loop. Usually they hit the ground before I do.
very informative video.
glad to hear it ;)
Great tutorial Jengar!
Cheers mate! :) i did indeed spend quite a bit of time on this one ;)
Thanks.
It's not war thunder that removes you, its me and the officers ;) when activity runs to 0 and there is no absence report left on discord in the report absence chat channel ppl will be removed. We have ppl waiting to get in ;)
Oh I did not realize that about the Discord report.
:)
hey mate, you were accepted by me 4 days ago, but today one of the officers made an error and removed you again, plz reapply and i will get you back in! :)
OK will do, I'll send it when I get home this afternoon US EDT, thanks. Also how long before tickets go to zero? I usually play 2-3 times week depending on how busy stuff is. Plus I'll remember about the Discord absence report.
Hey jengar how would you find what your k/d ratio is
profile>service record
I have it set so right mouse focusses on my target, so hold right mouse and use my mouse to fly.
hey i have a question. Are you using a joystick? because when you are rotating you look very far away from where you aircraft is pointing i cant do that with mouse. if i hold "C" my plane wont follow my mouse.
you have to release the c key
Slight problem tho If I want to turn my camera I have to turn my plane aswell since I’m on ps4 any thoughts?
get a M&K suited for PS4.
How are you flying and moving your mouse at the same time
fly with the keyboard, look around with the mouse!
I have bad situational awarness because i sideclimb while watching this video
