#Yamaha #Piaggero #Unboxing
Hello and welcome to another piano video at the Merriam Pianos UA-cam channel. In this video, we’ll be unboxing the Yamaha NP-32 keyboard, and passing along some first impressions.
Typically on our channel we discuss, review and focus on acoustic pianos and 88 note, weighted digital pianos. This video will be a little bit different as the Piagero NP-32 is a 76 note, battery operated keyboard that does not have a weighted action. There are plenty of situations that don’t require a full 88 note keyboard, and something light weight and super portable is actually more appropriate, which is why we’ve decided to check out this instrument today. Let’s get the NP-32 unboxed and see what Stu has to say!
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.
Weight:
Right out of the box I can tell this piano is super light, and after looking up at the specs, I’m not at all surprised to find out the Piagero NP-32 weighs a mere 12 lbs. It takes up such little space that this would be a great option for someone seeking a compact MIDI controller.
Action:
I can tell right away that this is a spring loaded action - there’s definitely no counterweights here. There is some pressure sensitivity which is a huge plus for an action like this, so for a lightweight, battery operated keyboard, this action is serviceable.
Speakers:
The speakers are more than acceptable considering the weight and intended use of the instrument, coming in with a solid 12 watts of power.
On-Board Sounds:
There are 10 on-board sounds featured here covering the basics, and the sound quality is quite good. There’s two acoustic piano samples, two E.piano samples, two organs, strings, vibraphone, and two harpsichord samples.
Software Controller App:
The compatible Sound Controller App by Yamaha is another really nice feature. The NP-32 easily connects to a smartphone or tablet, and the Sound Controller App functions as a convenient visual interface and allows for easy navigation of the keyboard’s various features.
Conclusions:
My first impressions leave me coming away impressed. This is a highly affordable and super portable instrument that will work quite well for a number of applications. All in all, this is a hard to beat product for the price.

It's a good thing I have this piano, while I'm sitting in a parking lot.
For the price, I think it has a great sound. Thank you Stu.
Agreed! Great little unit for portable use / travel use etc... Thanks for the comment! -stu
Thanks, Stu, for the including style-appropriate demos of the two harpsichord sounds. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for commenting!
Hi, native Italian speaker here, I think it's "piaggèro", which might be a mix of "piano" and "leggero" which means "lightweight". Also "ggè" should be pronounced like the j of "jest". Great video by the way :)
Awesome, thanks for the clarification! THey don't provide pronunciation tips on the box :)
Yep the emphasis is on the double letter in Italian - so you hit the GG
Waiting for mine too get delivered. Thanks for reassuring my online purchase!!
same here! 😄
I think this is an amazing video. Thank you so much for this! You’re an excellent teacher, guide, and player. This video answered just about all the questions rattling around in my head as I try to choose my first *real* keyboard. You did a great job demonstrating so many features and noticing details :) I can’t wait to watch more of your videos! I just started playing keyboard as a beginner three or four months ago. So I’m stepping newly into this marketplace. I’m excited to have found your video, and you can bet I’ll subscribe :)
Hi there! Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and subscription! We really appreciate it. We're very happy to hear that you've found our videos helpful. Welcome to the community and happy playing! :)
I had this instrument and got very upset with the speakers (distortion takes place at 80% or less...), keyboard action (like a toy) and piano sound, that doesn't seens to have any layer switch programmed. Very disappointing... But must say that I loved the DX piano and the slim design. I sold it and went for a PSR EW-410. Very happy now.
What a great player!
1:30 with the lighting like this, Stu appears Holy
Haha I see what you mean!
Hi Stu, nice to see your channel exploring other options, I loved this video and for people like me, which still don't know if they will like playing piano or if they will get frustrated if not capable, cheaper options are really interesting. Touch sensitivity is a must, but weighted keys maybe not so "essential" if you are not planning to play an acoustic piano.
Together with the more piano-centric Roland Go:Piano (61 or 88), I would love that you test Korg EK-50 and Yamaha PSR-EW410 (two of the nicest entry-level arranger keyboards together with Casio CT-X5000, which I personally don't like, too complex) and let us know which one you think it has the better grand piano voice, which one has the best sound/speaker quality (as beginners normally don't plug external amplifiers), which one has the best key bed / keys (knowing any of them is weighted), etc.
Thanks a lot for all your nice videos!
I think that the idea of putting a nice interface into a syncable phone app (instead of raising the price of the piano and build in an interface into the hardware that would look and feel to use half as good as the phone interface) is a total genius and cost effective move.
I hope most digital piano/leyboard manufacturers will do this with their future products.
It is certainly an interesting approach. As more of the population gets accustomed to using partner apps with pieces of electronic hardware, I think it is very likely that we will see more of this happening in the digital piano realm. :)
I agree in theory, however many people mention problems where brands (ahem.. y and r, not sure about others) drop app support for the even just a few year old keyboards/dps after a few years
Oh I totally forgot to think about that! Thanks, I totally agree with you. I'm not sure what could be the solution then (other then just build in at least a relatively cheap but functional mini screen).
It's quite nice to see reviews for these types of keyboards in this channel. Next review in this line might be the Roland GOPiano or the Roland GO88.
Awesome idea, we'll get that Roland GO reviewed pretty soon!
@@MerriamPianos awesome! Godspeed. ❤
I love that Piano very much with the App this Piano is really Great ❤
It is a very solid instrument for the money - that is for sure. :)
Thank you for this amazing Video
You're very welcome! Thanks so much for tuning in! :)
Would you please consider reviewing the Casio CT-S1?
Many people say it is one of the best portable keyboards out there now (in 2023 still).
For it's budget price its sounds are outstanding.
If you are OK with 61 keys, and you need a comparatively small and light keyboard, and you have a lower budget and you want a portable keyboard with battery powered option with excellent sounds,
then the Casio CT-S1 might be one of your best options.
The Casio CTS keyboards are quite compelling options for the price point. We have tackled reviews/comparisons on some of the other CTS models already. With that said, the CTS1 is not one of the of the models we regularly stock. However, we will do our best to tackle a review for you if the opportunity presents. Thanks for the suggestion! :)
Could you do a review of the Casiotone CT-S1, please? I think it's a pretty good keyboard, even tho it only has 61 keys
Nice keyboard and amazing video quality
Is this a good instrument for busking and accompanying yourself singing?
Hi there first of all thank you for the detailed review it is very helpful, i just need to know the name of the app. And is it compatible with android devices too,??
A very nice portable keyboard with a slightly narrower octave width 6.25" for easier stretches.
Great review as always,,thank You.
Thanks for watching!
Can you do a review on Casio px 870? I m about to buy one, but there aren t Deep review like yours on UA-cam
Sorry for my bad inglish but i am italian😅
what sort of cable do i need to plug it to my phone ?
What sample of piano on this instrument?? It’s Live! GrandPiano such as PSR-S series, or regular sample such as PSR-E series? Thanks!
Hi, could you please give me the name of the cable type ? thank you !
Alecis recital pro perhaps?
Thanks for exhaustive test.
No problem at all! Thanks for tuning in. :)
Please what’s the name of the software
I wonder, would you miss those 12 keys (88-76)? Or better, who would miss them, or when would you miss them, how advanced a player would get in trouble?
Hello, been playing piano for ~5 years. If you've got the money get an 88-key. I'd miss those keys a lot, as intermediate songs is where you'll start using them a fair bit.
@@lewis.davila Thank you,. I was wondering.
@@lewis.davila could you tell me some classical music where the extra octave is used? Thank you 😃
love your music!
I was looking forward to by this one.
HI, you ever made the Roland Go:Piano review?
Thank you very much for the review is this the big brother of the np12 which is a 61 note keyboard also do you know if you can transpose without the app thank you very much Joe
You're very welcome! You can transpose without the app. According to the manual, you hold down the "Metronome" button and press any key in the range of F#4 and F#5 to transpose the keyboard down by the corresponding number of semi-tones as laid out in the manual on page 20. F#4 is -6 semi-tones, while F#5 is +6 semi-tones. The keys in between allow you to access every transposition distance in between the min/max transposition range. Hope this helps! :)
A very delicate action
For sure! :)
Would this be good for a beginner?
Would the NP-12 sister version (61 keys) be good to get also for someone who is space limited or is that one just too small for serious playing?
You can play most Bach on 61 keys. Depending on your style 61 Keys can be fine. Obviously it will not be suitable for full range classical pieces, but you can create serious music with just 61 keys. I'll bet Stu would not sound limited at all.
Great video. Please I'd love to know if the Grandpiano voice on the Yamaha np-32 as same on the np-30
Thank you kindly! Yup - both models use Yamaha's AWM Stereo Sampling for their grand piano sounds. :)
@@MerriamPianos thank you so much
Hello. Is such a keyboard suitable for my child to start piano training and practicing or should he/she start with a piano? As you know, the piano is a very expensive instrument. Would starting with a keyboard instead of a piano have a negative effect on the child's start and progress?
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thank you for your question (it is a very good one!). While instruments like the NP-32 are good introductions to music and basic piano familiarity, the lack of a full 88 note range and a weighted keyboard does not make it an ideal option for studying piano and taking lessons on. With that said, there are some excellent digital pianos that are actually quite affordable, such as the Casio CDPS360 or Roland FP10 to name a few. Those would be more viable and appropriate options for piano study. The issue with not having a fully-weighted key action or, in some cases, correct key sizes (some keyboards have much smaller keys than a standard piano) is that it can lead to some bad technique habits being formed. Furthermore, you are investing time and establishing muscle memory for a feel/touch that is not akin to an actual piano, which means that it will be far more difficult to transition to a fully-weighted touch down the road. Thanks and hope this helps! :)
@@MerriamPianos Thank you very much for your valuable comment! It is a great chance for me to be able to consult with experts such as you in order to give my child a good education in this field. I think you recommend both of the digital pianos you mentioned, especially because they have 88 keys and it is not difficult to transition to an acoustic piano. So which one do you think I should buy, Roland FP10 or Casio CDP-S360?
is it proper for classical pieces like the moonlight sonata etc?
Yes
No
What is the truth...
is the key action similar to a Roland Go 88 or Korg Liano? In the winter I need something to play on the bed with my feet hid inside a quilt... I suppose 76 keys can be ok if it is like 6 key less on the left and 6 key less on the right as compared to the 88 keys
A lot of these models have a fairly similar touch in my opinion. Of course, they will be far lighter and less authentic feeling than a fully-weighted digital piano, but they offer portability and convenience. :)
very nice review
does this keyboard have an app fore andriod devices?
I guess so
Would you say the weighted keys of P45 would same as this one?
No, the NP32 has a different action and feel to the P45. It is a lighter touch/action.
Do I really need this app or can I also use the menu on the Yamaha?
Most digital keyboards will also have the ability to access features through the onboard controls. However, there are some features that are exclusively accessible through the app.
Can this piano be used with any music composition software, like Logic or fL studio?
Hi there! Yup - because the NP32 has a MIDI USB connection, you can use it in conjunction with DAWs/production software like Logic or FL Studio. :)
Thank you for answering 😊
what pedal do you recommend to use?
Pedal from m audio
THANK YOU!
hi, how do you record the sound? (btw: great video!)
Mic
what's the best keyboard for young children?
Is that white cable USB?
Hey! what's the name of the cable type?
:)
can this be plugged straight into FLstudio as a kayboard and use the vst inside the program to play the sounds ?
Please no replies for this? Very important
Does it have midi compatability
Yes
Always wondering why amazing videos like this has less than 1k likes and a stupid “Respect” short gets more than 1m likes
Nice keyboard for kids 👌
Why couldn't I see the keyboard when clicking to the link? It is linked to a list page
How do you get the app to get software control system ?
I am not sure if I understand the question. Partnering apps usually offer an array of features and control options, which are specific to the app and piano model of course.
I bought it as a 76 keys MIDI controller 😊
Very nice! It is a solid instrument and nice and compact.
I have np12..any diffrence in keybed touch..
@@imuzikworkstation3530 Not at all.
In the electronic keyboard with 76 keys, where is the middle C? (C3 or C4?) 🤔🤔
Hi! Middle C is always C4. The number of keys on a keyboard/piano does not have any influence on that. :)
Thanks a lot
You're very welcome! :)
Can i use it for classical pieces tho?
Some I suppose, but there will be some limitations. For instance, for pieces that require a full 88 note keyboard range, the NP32 will be insufficient.
Can you layer sounds?
Yup - the NP32 model does have dual/layer functionality. :)
dont be fooled by the audio this video is producing, the piano won’t be that loud, i mean, i even heard his gulp wtf
I dont think the piano audio is through the same mic as his gulp if that's what ur trying to say?
I’d definitely recommend this over the 61 or 88 key Roland Go Piano. I do own a Roland Go Keys, but that’s a different beast entirely.
Do u think the Roland Go Keys is better than the Piaggero?
@@jaleaazul If you’re after more features and sounds, the Go Keys will fill the requirement nicely. My NP-32 is currently retired, replaced with a Casio CT-S1 due to space considerations.
@@douglasw.7864 I'm looking for good quality sounds and weighted keys (if possible), like the Korg B2N. I would use it to record and practice
@@jaleaazul The Go Keys has a non-weighted action. Some light resistance, similar to synth keyboards.
@@douglasw.7864 Alright, thank you 😊
Are the batteries rechargeable?
Nice video and review... I personally think the little problem with this keyboard is the absence of pitch bend..my opinion tho
You're very welcome! Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts! :)
Not needed for piano.

Whitch app is that?
The app is called Digital Piano Controller. :)
can we add a sustain pedal?
@David Did the seller give it to you or was it in the box?
Is it possible to connect it with android Phone?
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! I believe that it is still possible to connect with an Android phone.
@@MerriamPianos i think i need smart pianist app. Thanks for replying btw😀 So do you reconend it to amateur player who is only interested in Grand piano sound?
These things are so much better than those God-awful DGX and YPG boards and their super Nintendo quality piano samples
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Every player will have their tonal preferences of course. With that said, I must admit that Super Nintendo sounds have a pretty special place in my heart. Nostalgia is a powerful thing! ;)
@@MerriamPianos they could have kept the super Nintendo nostalgia for some of the other samples and left the piano sample alone, Yamaha is known for their outstanding piano samples, that's why the dgx and ypg series are such disappointments
O video contribuiu para minha decisão. Thank you
Você comprou Erik? Poderia me dar seu parecer?
what does data capacity meam?
It refers to how much data a computer system can handle. :)
@@MerriamPianos thank you for the quick response so what does 7000 notes refer to on data capacity for the yamaha keyboard
This is my comment on an old video. Dunno whether I commented before. I'm really surprised that Yamaha bothered to make this piano. A lightweight portable piano with fewer keys is a great concept, and Yamaha has made them before at higher levels, and with pretty good success (the CP-73 for example) but this piano has a disappointing action, a feeble tone, and loses the potential portability advantage because it has speakers at the ends making it too long. Stu makes a brave effort, but even he can't quite play this instrument smoothly. Lots of good players need a 73-note (or shorter) travel piano, with the best possible action that doesn't put the weight over about 9kg. The speakers could be modest, bolt-on or non-existent, but it does need a few good built-in sounds too.
why is it backwards
👍👍
Thanks! :)
Why did Yamaha leave off a Hammond type of organ sound?
With entry level instruments, there are usually some limitations in terms of onboard sounds and features.
Can u gig with it?
is it weighted?
The keys are graded, but not weighted. Graded means that the keys are harder to press in the lower register than the upper register. But, they are not fully-weighted keys.
@@MerriamPianos thank you!
Yamaha P45 sound.
There are definitely some similarities in terms of the tonal character of the piano sounds. :)
How much is this? I cant find it in amazon
I have seen it advertised for 299.99 usd.
Too bad there so much overhang beyond the keybed. The instrument is physically larger than it should be. The sounds are very pleasant.
yep should definitely saw the speakers off to make it shorter
@@Filinozavr They have to figure a better placement for the speakers if that is the issue.
Yes. If you put the NP-32 in a hard case, it probably won't fit in the back seat of a car. If portability was a consideration, that's unfortunate. And this has been going on since 2007 (when the Yamaha NP-30 was launched).
@@kiskadar69 please if you ever used the np-30 are the grandpiano voices on the Yamaha np-30 same as on this np-32
NP32 76 keys = 6 1/2 octaves
