If you go to Angkor Wat, you will see the blocks in all the temples there, were laid then carved, so joins go up the middle and across carved panels. Here, each large panel was in one piece and set into the walls. I asked the guide about this. He said back in the 1980's the whole temple was blown up by Muslim terrorists. The government didn't want to publicise it, so the closed the monument for a year while it was rebuilt. Carvers and stone masons, were brought in from India. As a result, most of the monument is 'new'. All the carvings that had to be replaced, are repeated and clearly Indian in style !
