In this video, we welcome our latest jazz bass tutor, the great Russell Hall and discuss all things jazz bass.
Meet Russell Hall:
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Russell Hall migrated to the United States in 2007 where his double bass studies progressed quickly through the rigorous programs of The Dillard Center for the Arts and The Juilliard School. Russell has a deep understanding of the jazz tradition, having studied with many of the double bass world's most renowned artists including Ron Carter, Christian McBride, and Ben Wolfe. Still, he is also an artist looking forward with his own distinct and virtuosic approach to the double bass.
As a first-call bassist in New York City, Russell has performed with some of the biggest names in music including Joey Alexander, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Roy Hargrove, Kathleen Battle, Christian McBride, Emmet Cohen, Russell Malone, George Coleman and many more. Also well known for his work with the Emmet Cohen Trio alongside drummer Kyle Poole, Russell also leads his own bands, including Bessie and the Rainbowkids to much critical acclaim.
Russell Hall joined the Discover Double Bass faculty as a jazz bass specialist with his course, Bessie’s Bass Busters which is out now: courses.discoverdoublebass.co...

Russell Hall would sound good playing rubber bands on a cigar box. I sent him an email talking about his sound & he responded with, "Do you want to play?" If I was in the US, I'd travel across the country to play with him.
For me Hall is the greatest bassist of our time - great taste in note choice, not to much not to little - Always whats best for the music!! And also outstanding wardrobe of course
I couldn’t agree more! He is such a special person and incredible artist.
Huge fan. Tone. Often no amp, but the trio usually listens so well he don’t need it.
@@DiscoverDoubleBass What is your opinion on the D' Addario Helicore Strings Orchestra Bass Strings? They are supposed to produce a warm tone.
SUCH SWEET THUNDER!
It was so good to 'meet' Russell after hearing him at Emmet's place over the past few years. Ohhhh... and the sound of that bass. Thank you.
Astonishing virtuosity coupled with humour and generosity of spirit... a true star.
40:00 I love this moment when Russell is reflecting on being/becoming a member of this amazing group of bass players. It's a joy to hear this. Well earned Mr. Hall! :)
Absolutely brilliant bassist! Love him with emmet cohen!
Russell is new to me. How did I miss him so far. Fantastic! And that bass!
The incredible Mr. Russel Hall! Adore Adore...thank you... so inspiring and you are just getting started :)
Big fan of Russell's. Thanks for the great interview, Geoff!
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it 😀
These videos are just awesome... I'm not really one for commenting but the effort going into this is something else. I've just enrolled onto Russell's course, looking forward to delving in!
Russell lifts the performance of any ensemble his is part of.
These interviews are just magical 👍
Amazing! Really looking forward to this series, Geoff! Great player and seems like such a nice guy.
OMG! That Bass!
It sounds so good!
Russell is a very special musician, and a great person. I miss him in a way (had the pleasure to get to know him some years back).
So great to see him continue on such a meteoric, and well deserved, rise.
Chapeau a vous, Russell. Chapeau :-)
Yes, he really deserves all the attention his music is getting. He's such a special artist and human being too.
Great interview and great energy ! Well done Geoff and Russell.
Hall is iconic!
I've played that Bass before made by Randy Hunt in Nashville....it's GOLD!!!
Yes, Randy is such an incredible maker and that bass is a canon! 🤩
Simply awesome. Thanks!
For info, the Performance at 46:35 : the theme is "Such Sweet Thunder", by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, dedicated to Shakespeare by the way. This guy knows really the history of his music, Jazz. Fantastic video !
Yesssss! Can't wait to watch this later
I love Russell Hall! This is such a treat.
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Very inspiring, Russell is great !
Mr hall is a impeccable bass player 👌 Ron Carter Sam Jones paul chambers Charles mingus Reggie workman Oscar petiford there. Bass playing lives on forever.
Amo a este señor.
the best of the best mister Hall
I am a gut girl…Olive Gand D Passione A and E. Great video.
Great player! Great sound!
5 minutes in when he mentions Mingus and Carter I am thinking, interesting two other taurus masters (I had looked up his birthdate some time ago), like my favourite, Mister P.C., and a few minutes later he mentions the taurus lineage himself, amazing... great arist
Same! I was reciting the Tauran bass players right along with him!!
Ron Carter scares me, he'd be yelling at me ALL the time lol. Goin to have a look at Russell's course thanks Geoff. After playing Bluegrass and Country since I began in 2012 I now find myself in a Film Noir & Torch Song jazz trio playing tunes from the 20's 30's 40's. I'm absolute rubbish at it following chord charts but I'm giving it a go.
Great interview, thank you so much! I completely relate to what he is saying concerning strings. Actually the Evah Slaps are very close to my "dream strings": A gut like sound but synthetic (I'm vegetarian/nearly vegan too), with a nice touch an good arco response. I just find that they could have slightly more tension and a slightly fatter (or more fundamental) sound. I still hope that at some point my "dream strings" will be available, and I think that they would also suit Russel's taste.
Thanks for watching and I hope Pirastro are listening :-)
BTW, I'm a big fan of your work at StringMatrix. It's an incredible project and huge help to the bassworld. :-)
@@DiscoverDoubleBass Thank you very much Geoff, I am also a big fan of your channel! I just couldn't find time to finish my new videos in last months... But I am working at it!
Russell is one of the hottest players out there, amazing musicianship, always killin' "without even trying", soooo natural💯💣
Absolutely! 👍
