Thoughts on Marsch's first squad?

So, so, SO happy Hoilett is coming. SO happy.
Happy hoilett is back! He probably won’t start but I assume he will come off the bench and make an impact
Ahmed instead of Brym for sure. Ahmed is a natural midfielder.
Ali Ahmed is really a must in a couple of friendlies. You don't have to start him, but he is very adaptable and can play different positions very well. He has pace and skill...and potential! He needs the playing time.
Disappointed to see Ahmed not on the squad. I would choose him over Choiniere or Piette. Great to see Hoilett back, and great to see that Laryea might be fit to play. Vitoria and Kennedy brought needed height to the backline, along with Borjan. This new squad is seriously missing height. Finally, why deFougeroiles over Kennedy or McGraw?
I mean, especially because it seems Ahmed could have come without bumping anyone. Really surprising and easily the most disappointing part of this camp announcement. But yeah, lots to be happy about, too.
@@greglawrence9230 My take on it is that Marsch doesn't know Ahmed and Biello didn't seem sweet on him, having left him out the past 2 windows. So I guess Ahmed needs to raise his profile a little, which is tough as the Whitecaps are a little weak these days...
@@djknox2 Well, in the press release Marsch spoke pretty specifically about Ali - saying he was clearly someone we'd want to invest in for the future but that he had to think about the best group for a quick adoption of what he wants to do right now. Seems almost like he feels Ahmed doesn't fit his program very well, but that surely couldn't be right. Maybe it was more that he would use him in the same way that he'd use other players that he prefers? But again, Ahmed is so versatile, that seems odd, too. It was so odd that it made me wonder if he feels he knows enough about Ahmed to confidently bring him to Copa but wants to get a better look at some other players in these friendlies. But that might be the oddest yet, since he's only bringing 26 players. Scratching my head.

If this squad can gel they will be dangerous, excited to watch them play.

Osorio and Piette are taking up space for some deserving talent.
Could well be because Marsch will field a 4-2-3-1 rather than the 4-3-3, and he's going to rely on Osorio and Piette (as well as Hoilett) in that formation.
@@greglawrence9230 That is exactly it. He wants a CDM and a CAM. We will see Oso and Hoilett at CAM and we will see Piette at CDM. My biggest concern is if he tries to put Davies in the center of the pitch as Herdman tried several times. He's not good there, dribbling too much and turning the ball over. Midfield is a very special position where one needs incredible awareness. Davies doesn't seem to have that.
@@djknox2 Man, I just REALLY want to see Hoilett in a 10 behind David, starting, and at least for 45 mins. in one of the friendlies. Let's have a look. I got a really good feeling about it. With Davies; we know he'll be given license to wander, but I sure hope other players have clear instructions to cover his ass, cause turnovers when everyone is pushing forward against this summer's talent are going to hurt real bad. It does kinda look like Marsch might give the back 4 instructions too say home, though.

The big surprise is only 26 players. Not bringing Ahmed is a crime. He has more than earned it. He's proven he can thrive at the international level. And he is so incredibly versatile. Could slot in well in a handful of positions. That seems like a big loss.

I think Hiebert may start at LB. Marsch might be looking for more defensive stability in our backline which has looked shaky.
Surely a 4-2-3-1 is more likely than a 4-3-3? The player group certainly suggests that to me.
Funny at the LM we have 2 left-footed guys and 1 righty and at RM we have 2righties and 1 left.
I think it depends on the player and what they like, how good they are with their 'bad' foot. Example, Millar likes to cut inside to shoot on goal.
Surprised that there is no Ahmed.
I rate St. Clair higher thatn Crepeau. I guess we'll see.
