Disinfecting water = boiling or adding water tablets. Water filtering = removing particulates which may or may not include microbes. Water Purifying = a combination of both of the above such as a process of distilling or reverse osmosis. It may be a good idea to restore lost minerals after such a process to prevent diluting your body of necessary electrolytes.
Something to consider with the “in the US you don’t need to worry about viruses in water”. While as a baseline this is true, you need to consider what might be upstream, if there might be human waste entering the stream (busy camp ground) or domestic livestock waste upstream, viruses CAN still be a concern.
I bought a Grayl for my trip to Peru, and now I use it here in the US on my backpacking trips as well. It is heavier, but the ease of use makes it worth it to me. Not to mention when I was on the AT section hiking last year and people were having to filter and then boil due to a bad outbreak of giardia I didn’t have to worry about that :)
Yehhh found this out the hard way last week, drank from a stream, partly filtered and partly filtered AND purified with tablets. Should’ve had patience for the first part as I’ve never been so ill in my fucking life. Purify your water folks! But you can do this with chlorine tablets too, wayyyyyy cheaper :)
Purifiers are nice when you don’t backpack in muddy areas. I used to take a pump filter to the sierras which is 99.99% clear clean water that needs sanitation. And having a filter isn’t necessary
don’t understand Both types filter contamination The question is to what degree Boiling water purifies Chlorine tablets purifies These methods kills the concentration
Didn't touch on how they work which is very important. The Grayl uses iodine in the filter to 'purify' the water. Otherwise it's just the same as all the other backpacking filters. The MSR uses reverse osmosis which will even remove salt from saltwater. A completely different way of cleaning your water.
The Gaurdian is also rated to remove viruses from water, but the thing to remember in North America is that the biggest concern from water is USUALLY parasites like giardia or cryptosporidium or bacterial issues (from water contaminated by livestock waste).

subscribed to your new channel! Good stuff!
would a filter be okay in U.S. if a person is ammune compromised? I have been concerned about it
Great advice, I'm going on a 55 mile backpacking trip through glacier in about a year. Anything else I should be planning to pack?
FYI, Florida is an international water source.
Which one do you recommend for backpacking strictly in America?
Unless you’re filtering stuff around population centres or major pollution you will only need a filter
Get the MSR filter. It's the best possible option.
Couldn’t you boil to kill the viruses then filter (if one was concerned)
don’t understand
Both types filter contamination
The question is to what degree
Boiling water purifies
Chlorine tablets purifies
These methods kills the concentration
Great advice and info! Not this plumber 😂
Useful info..wait, who's underpants?!!😅
