    I love this. I don't think I've ever tried apple cider but after watching this, I hope I like it so I have an excuse to make this. : )
    Great design and video.

    Wild yeast. Either leave it standing in an open container like a bowl for a while, or add a shot of cider that is already fermenting.

    I had been thinking of stuff like that. But my experience is, grinding is already faster than pressing.
    Of course, there are commercial machines one can buy that automate almost everything, but for lots of $

      Matthias Wandel my friends have one that is cast iron from the late 1800s still works fine and makes great cider it has a press where you put the mush in a shirt crank the shell and it is like a vise and the grindy part has three paddle like wheels it sounds old!

    greetings from germany and my fully respect at your work - i like to see your videos, without any other interests on handmade productions. I'm just a stupid, lefthanded office guy - but i love it, how you made an idea into an functionally result or product. That's great, simply great!

    Fantastic looking apple crusher -- make for a great home DIY project. One recommendation: You need to use a cheese clothe type strainer bag over a bucket to catch your larger bits; separating your juice from the bits. Then you can build a larger box frame with a screen at the bottom and a weighted press on top to put the bit bag into and gently apply the weight to to squeeze out the remaining juice from the bit bag. I guess the bit bag contents can go back out to compost.

    I think that's why historically there has been so many fermented alcohol drinks. Alcohol kills a lot of germs. In fact, just googling, it appears that drinking alcohol with a meal reduces your chance of food poisoning!

    Great job. A lot of people think you need to buy everything instead of make it yourself. Could you use a inclined ramp to automatically feed the apples? I like the multiple speeds available on your electric motor.

    Looks like something I'm going to have to make. I have a tonne of apple trees at my cottage, so many that we never know what to do with all of them when it comes time to harvest. We usually end up giving most of them away to friends. But if I can grind them all to make my own hard cider, that would be quite excellent.

    Old fashioned grinders used a large cast iron flywheel on the grinder. IMO this helps quite a bit keeping up momentum when mulching through apples. Quite a fine bit of woodworking though!

    I think you'd be better using mineral oil instead of vegetable oil. Vegetable oil can go rancid over time but mineral oil doesn't. I think Lemon oil is okay, too. I'm not sure about others but I've read a number of warnings about using vegetable oil in woodworking.
    Nice little machine, though, Matt.

    Very nice indeed. You, sir, amaze me with your "wood everywhere" things.
    I made a press for fruits to make juice and since I wanted only liquid with no pulp and no peel, I went and modified (and cleaned very well) an automotive supercharger with twin scrolls that squishes everything. I even made juice from parsley and other general dry plants/fruits. I should make a video of it.

    My V1 apple grinder was built like that. The V2 just had a 5" diameter ash cylinder that I cut teeth out of with my table saw. That worked real well. The V3 was going to be much the same but I was going to cut slots and hammer in steak knife blades from $1 store knives. All that being said we moved over to using a 6 HP chipper for apple smooshing. We make ~30 gallons in a session and you can dump a 100 pound feed back chock full of apples into the chipper and have mush in seconds. With any of my homebrew smooshers it took longer to smoosh them then it did to press them.
    Oh, we also have a 100+ year old press, but we use a hydraulic jack with it. No torsion on the frame and a lot more pressure.

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  9 років тому +1

      Matthew Kleinmann The chiper is a cool idea. Does it pulp the applees sufficiently? Cutting is not as good as mashing. Back home, pressing is much slower than grinding.

    • @matthewkleinmann
      @matthewkleinmann 9 років тому +2

      Matthias Wandel
      The chipper works great. The apples are turned into mush that works real well in the press. I built a stand of sorts that the chipper sits on so the chute is just a wee bit taller than a standard 5 gallon bucket. I also wrap a tarp around the chute and hold that on with a bungee cord. Without that the speed the mush comes out of the shoot it will bounce back out of the buckets. The tarp keeps most of it going where you want it. BTW, if you use the chipper for other stuff and you are worried about yuck in your cider you can run some bleach and than a few buckets of ice through the chipper. I run the chipper about 1 notch up from an idle.

    Really cool mechanism Matthias! I think it would've been easier to place some sort of netting under the grinder wheel so you don't get chunks of apple, seeds or stems in the bowl. You also wouldn't have to wring the juice out later. I'm guessing you would still be using this after four years or have made any changes? Still, awesome contraption!
