Like many bands of this era, ELO were just great storytellers! Look at the album cover. It shows an electric chair. Now picture this as you listen to the music... Picture a man in a cold dark cell. The man is frightened and alone. He has been condemned to die. Finally they come for him and you can hear his fear as they open the door and lead him to his fate.
All along that final walk he hears the voices of condemnation, the feels the guilt for what he has done. You hear the choir of religious folk singing the last rights or praying for his soul. Time is slipping away as he is strapped into the chair... the tension builds until finally they throw the switch and the electricity pulses through him.
We hear the spasms ripping through his body, over and over until finally he is released. He floats up out of his body, his suffering is over, but now comes the regret; the realisation of what he has lost. For a few glorious moments he relives the joy and passion of being alive until once again he is reminded of how much he has thrown away. All he has now is the memory, and the memory will sustain him and torment him forever.
Those last deep thrums of the electric guitar are both brutal and glorious.
The music is reversible. But time is not.
Turn back... turn back... turn back...
    Man, I miss the storytellers!

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world.... en.wikipedia.org/.../Electric_Light_Orchestra...
50 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others... I respect the opinion of others and don't try to change their opinions but i always like to bring facts to the table.... The Beatles and ELO are my best 2 favorite Bands ever. We can praise both Bands in a very positive way. Jeff Lynne has done mainly everything by himself as opposed to The Beatles who were 4 plus George Martin to achieve basically the same thing. It Makes Jeff Lynne so unique. Jeff also made sure he had better orchestration and arrangements, thanks to Louis Clark who became a very good contributor for some ELO albums. Also, ELO has always been much better than the Beatles live. The Beatles were a fantastic Studio Band under the direction of the brilliant George Martin but they didn't tour very much in the later years because they couldn't reproduce on stage the more sophisticated albums. The Beatles live only had 3 Guitarists and one drummer. The Beatles have been the industry standard for decades and guess who influenced or inspired Them? The Beatles were influenced by Elvis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, Ravi Shankar....Are they considered ripped off artists? Not at all! The Beatles and ELO are the 2 greatest Bands ever!!! Can't wait for Jeff Lynne's ELO to Tour in 2021 or 2022.

I strongly doubt that JL was inspired by APP - this song is from _Face The Music_ , ELO's *fifth* album released 1975 (with Jeff having a long history of music before that with Idle Race and the Move), and APP had their debut with _Tales of Mystery and Imagination_ in 1976. Maybe you meant the other way around?

Annd also the fringers, the loonies, and rigid hardcore, this is my way, the right way, the only way. Rock music was the Devils device for luring young, lost people away from God etc. etc . etc. So a lot of rock bands (Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Doors, ELO, Black Sabbath, and so on. the religous parents have a point.there is some backmasking in the song eldorado, the part about christ is dead & many after, is pretty clear.the same with waterfall.the chorse backward repeats, all for all, we are but death.but played forward it repeats face the mighty waterfall.alot of elo's weird sounding music was actually backward cello's & violins.like the spot in the middle of evil woman.its backwards for 5 or 6 seconds.it sounds creepy.

I Love ELO! I always feel they’re an underrated band. They have some really cool interesting stuff... and I even love their contributions to the movie Xanadu, which was played over & over again when HBO FIRST came out as THE big first movie’s only cable channel. I was a really little girl, but between that movie & the Jazz Singer, I loved the soundtracks sooo much. Hadn’t heard this in a minute, always a pleasure to! 🖤🙌🤘

Sorry, but this is NOT a good representation of ELO, IMHO. I had all their albums back in the day, and some of their CDs now. Lots of much better songs. Loved your collaboration tonight with Brandon & the others.😊

This is by far my favorite ELO song. IMHO. I'm 62 and just tired of all their pop songs. I like the earlier more progressive stuff now.

You should try it on " quadraphonic stereo " with black light posters and a lava lamp, as God intended.😁

It ruins a good buzz. But a rotating mirror ball with that color changing light would be nice. And maybe an industrial size box of fig newtons. 😁

Thanks to the person that suggested this song! ELO was one of the few British rock bands that incorporated classical music instruments into the the rock genre. The Beatles, the Moody Blues, and Queen are some other famous examples. Used to blast this CD zipping up and down the Florida Turnpike especially on winter days when I could roll the windows down and crank up the volume! Thanks for the memories!

The original version is even weirder and longer...and better as the strangeness of the beginning really primes you for the rest of the song. The whole album, with Strange Magic, Evil Woman, Waterfall, and other songs, is a gem and an example of when groups in Rock and R&B were always trying different things rather than just building songs around a marketing survey.

Back in the 70s almost every rock record was played backward by folks just looking (looking hard!) for any signs of Satan worshipers. I seriously doubt you'll find anything on an ELO record!!! I have a few of them too, but I won't tear them up by going backward! What was I doing when I 1st heard ''Fire On High'', can't remember I was 7yo!

There’s an amusement park in Saco Maine called Funtown USA that has a scrambler ride inside a dome. The only light is black light and they play this song while projecting creepy images all over the inside of the dome. I remember as a kid not knowing weather to think it was awesome or to be scared.

How many people knew this song was by ELO. I remember hearing this SONG years ago and liking it, even if the beginning started out a little strange. Electric Light Orchestra is so talented with many variations in their songs to enjoy. Still my favorite, their first big hit in the US, EVIL WOMAN. Now Ty, more ALL IN THE FAMILY. LOL.
