7:11 i believe it was shown in an ad of some kind. I remember watching a video where they hit the wrong wall and then the right one. To be cinematic, I would always do that as a child. Yesterday, I learned cannonless
This is wild to think about lol. Definitely one of those situations where some kids found it out via the ad or a strategy guide or whatever, and it spread through recesses and word of mouth until it became common knowledge.
Whomp's Fortress does feel like the more iconic starting stage of Mario 64. Plenty of old 3D platformers did open grassy plain with rolling hills. The juxtaposition of different kinds of sharp geometry against each other is more unique to Mario 64 I think. I also like the pool too. It felt like a place to catch players and let them run around if they needed a break from attempting to get up the level
I would disagree, Bomb-Omb Battlefield is a better 1st stage than Wamp's Fortress for many reasons. 1.) It fits better with the style of Mario. The classic Mario games start out with a grassy 1-1, before introducing a stony (or underground) 1-2, and concluding a watery 1-3. Bomb-Omb is that grassy 1-1, Wamp's Fortress is that stony 1-2, and Jolly Roger Bay is that water world 1-3. The only thing that could have improved this would have been if you went inside Wamp's Fortress, if just part of it at least. 2.) Aesthetically, it better transitions into the different "biomes" of the game. Bomb-Omb Battlefield is grassy. The landing platform of Wamp's Fortress is grassy before you climb up the fortress. That grassy base smooths out the transition from grass fields to varying structures you will see throughout the game. 3.) Gameplay. Although traditional 1-1 does have death zones to fall in, I do think it serves the game better to learn in a safer sandbox with 3D platforming being brand new to this game. There is a little extra time for players to learn the controls (considering the game in the context it was made), -especially considering the obstacles to fall off of in Wamp's Fortress can really get a new player. Having Bomb-Omb Battlefield to ease you into the dangers of the game is really fitting. I know it's hard for us today to consider this course a challenge, but considering the time this game came out, having this course as an opening stage may have caused many people to give up on the game before they collected their first star. 4.) The cannon. Bomb-Omb Battlefield is the perfect course to introduce the cannon, because bomb-ombs are using it for their war. The red bomb-omb and his cannon in Wamp's Fortress doesn't make sense without Bomb-Omb Battlefield introducing the red bomb-ombs as allies.
All are good points. And I actually agree with a lot of them. I just feel like BBB is more of a setup or tutorial stage (which isn't a bad thing) and Whomp's Fortress is when the test starts
First time I saw this game was at a display at Best buy I was completely mentally blind and disoriented and I didn't know that the outside of the castle was the courtyard I went inside and I was like wow the inside of the castle is painted like outside That's amazing
Hahaha. Yeah I had my nephew play (he's only played it once for a few hours and generally sticks to fortnite so he has little 3D platforming experience). Believe it or not this was actually the best footage I could get
@@NintenDeen bit late to the party, but in the introductionary video to this series you spoke of nostalgia, so, as I'm reading this, I'm wondering how he perceives this game and what his take on it is.
I still can't believe the "blast away the wall" star. Is there maybe a sign that gives you a hint for that mission? Or a bob-omb buddy conversation? Or SOMEthing? I mean they didn't even put a big crack on it like in Zelda. It seems more like a place to hide a 1up than a star.
Haha, I would trial and error some crazy shot with the cannon until I got it! Usually I'd lose a few lives along the way... In hindsight, this did seem like an unreasonable challenge. 😅@@NintenDeen
I think when I was younger, I found Shoot to the Wild Blue to be less intuitive than Blast Away the Wall.
I've always enjoyed the vertical natured of this level. The variety of obstacles and paths make it fun.
Agreed! There are a lot of linear "climbing" type stages that I think are more typical of the Mario level styles and I enjoy that
So much thought, I always assumed they just slapped it there.
It always seems like that haha. That's why I like giving it a deeper look

Yup! The laid bricks alone stand out aesthetically for the time
Wait you're supposed to use the owl? I used the cannon 😭 and somehow got it on the first try
Whomp whomp!
I never figured out that you could kick over the post to make a bridge, despite 100%ing this game multiple times.

I remember i lost it when we found out you could break those damn walls. It was a massive "oohhhhh!" Moment for me and my nephew at the time.
I like the length of these videos so far. Short enough to watch one on break
I don’t know who was playing, but it made me so anxious that I couldn’t keep watching the video. The person couldn’t even get onto a platform xD

No need to apologize! I should've replayed it myself lol

There was a TV commercial that showed how to grab it that I think most people used to figure it out lol. After that it was all word of mouth
There's a reason this stage was remade in one of the Galaxies, not Bob-Omb Battlefield.

6:31 k8ck down a whaaat?
Hold on... Theres an owl?!? This video is my first time seeing him. 😖
How did you get the cage star then lool

I got the book for this game
Strategy guides pre Internet were so much fun lol
Terrible backache, Whomp?
