emulating vocalists is like melody 101 that every guitarist should learn i never think of scales, BB king himself said many times "i dont play scales" melody, just like harmony, has its own degrees and cadences, the difference between harmony and melody, is that harmony happens "once" per bar, while melody can happen up to 16 times or more, it takes a much longer cycle for the harmony to complete a cadence, while a melody happens way more often
46:00 - The Zen of guitar playing. This advice, of course, not meant for the beginner but for the well advanced player who has mastered the guitar to the point where she doesn't need the instrument to make music; she uses the instrument to communicate her musical thoughts to an audience... This advice would work for any other creative process: writing comes to mind. So this particular segment, I should think, it's not for the person just learning to play the instrument, in fact, it would frustrate most beginners to hear this advice, because transcribing your thoughts only happens at the highest level or accomplishment: after you've woodshed the sh*t out of the instrument and developed muscle memory so playing becomes intuitive.!
I’ve been playing guitar for 13 years, with gaps in between, but if there is anything I could ever recommend, learn how the instrument works, and what flows with what and where. I can play any of the stuff here. But what I hate the most is I can’t just flow yet

ABCDEFG are the chords bud
Really opened my eyes and inspired me as never before. Thanks so much!
This gold , I'll be re- watching this multiple times just trying to internalize this information.
This is unfair.. I cant keep all of this in my head at once John!
04:30 bb king
19:00 Sugary
21:00 C - chord changes
That groove when demonstrating Jimmi Vaughan vocals is so delicious.
Thank you for doing this Simon. Very grateful
Yes, thank you very much for putting the time into this. I value this knowledge greatly!
Quite remarkable! How dedicated and clever and focused this person is. He has to be GIFTED. There can’t be any other answer. Long may he continue on his journey.
He’s not gifted at all. What it is is practice and skill, just like me an you have. The difference is he dosent make excuses like you, he works hard to get to that level
He must have grinded his ass sitting with that guitar hours a day
Ugh....he's so fucking good. And he's an amazing teacher, as well. Love you, John.
Thanks so much John I’d give so much to have you as a teacher what an incredible opportunity that would be wish we were friend brotha lol just wanna chill and learn from you man. You are an incredible musician one of my favorite ever. I would say in your class you are the best. Such a wealth of knowledge.
playing with the Dead has changed Mayer's playing a lot i know bc i have listened to his playing since 2001
He's always been sick at guitar. I promise you. He got the dead gig because of his skill. I love him too.
@@engineermouth BRO I AGREE SEAN
amazing compilation
Oh man that "just one tap" tip is awesome, almost sounds like a harmonica. Can't wait to try this.
Thank you very much for the effort you had placed into making this! I appreciate it. I'm somehow new to guitar, but the stuff in here are understandble, at least for me they are. I've acquired stuff both technically and musically from this video alone. I never knew that John Mayer had these guitar tips until now.
Again, thank you for this! Keep up the work. Your other videos are helpful as well. Stay humble!
I like that! The idea first vs what the guitar offers. Thanks John.
Great stuff; thanks so much for compiling; thank you Mr. Mayer! Voodoo child solo starts right away high on the neck by the way. Or maybe that whole piece is a solo, and the “solo” is just the climax.
emulating vocalists is like melody 101 that every guitarist should learn
i never think of scales, BB king himself said many times "i dont play scales"
melody, just like harmony, has its own degrees and cadences, the difference between harmony and melody, is that harmony happens "once" per bar, while melody can happen up to 16 times or more, it takes a much longer cycle for the harmony to complete a cadence, while a melody happens way more often
Thanks for taking the time to edit and post this !
Thank you man! I had a playlist of these videos separately, but this is definitely better!
I'd love to see him playing with the great Mark Knopfler
YES PLEASEEE MAKE IT HAPPEN
I've always wanted to see that.
Ikrrrr... It might be a fucking apocalypse 😍🔥
Mark a legend...
That's a very fine idea.
Kudos overload for this amazingly inspiring set of lessons
Thank you Soo much for these lessons john
Is John playing with Toma fujita at 17:00?
Love John Mayer. Definitely some great tips for beginners here.
Thanks for putting this together!! Good stuff!
I'm sure you've had those jam sessions when your in "The ZONE".
People talk about JM's influences but all I hear is the late and great Mr. BB King.
I'll take 2 soulful notes over a flurry of nonsense any day.
John Mayer may not be a virtuoso like Satriani or George Benson, but I love that he sticks with what he does best. Playing melodic lines with great vibrato that resembles vocal lines by blues/soul singers.
Great Compilations👏
Great presentation Thanks
Thank you and God Bless you John Mayer for sharing so much insights and knowledge that you share with us the gift that God Placed in you and that what you love and born to do with us the world. 🖐️❤️🗺️🕊️
Love your work man super educational thanks a bunch 👍
That one tap bend is awesome.
Thanks so much for the reupload :)
The fact that he tours with a band of people twice his age just for the joy of playing says a lot about him as a person and a player.
A great video full of sage words but I couldn't help thinking while watching it that he could do with taking some of his own advice. He confirmed it during his tap rhythm tap section, he's perfected the 50s.
thanks for this! I'm on a Mayer kick these days. diving in.
Where should a noob start?
John Mayer is legit one of the smartest guitar players around. Just a really smart guy and you can tell his memory is a valuable tool. It's not something you can teach.
I definitely noticed the vocals on Live At The Regal way before the guitar. I knew BB King was a great guitarist but his vocals are fucking fantastic.
Guitar Gold!! Thanks for reposting.
Love the pick switch !
around 20mins in is pure gold. Thanks Simon and thanks John!
Thank you for this compilation 👍
What a living legend, hats off John. 👏
glad we get to see stuff like this from a master guitar player who i beleive is on srvs level who has always been my number one, srv did pretty stuff but more heavy blues imo but john does more pretty soulful stuff and heavy blues, wish srv was still alive and comming out with more pretty soundin stuff such as lenny, or little wing, to bad he couldnt be alive teaching us all his tricks like john is, we should all really appreciate this cuz what if you could go back in time and have srv do stuff like this for his fans, that would be incredible but will never happen. So the fact that John is doing this for us is awsome.
awsome, love your guitar words, going to listen to vocals more.
