This talk reminds me of the recent Daniel Penny controversy. A man was threatening people in the subway, and Penny, a former marine, immobilized him with a choke hold to prevent him from harming anyone and the man ended up dying. Penny went to trial for this and was acquitted. Some say he is a hero, others say he is a murderer. He said he couldn’t live with the weight on his consciousness if he didn’t intervene and someone got hurt. Culturally it seems most people don’t think there is such thing as crime of omission and it seems safer just to do nothing, even if you could do something. There is even a trend online of parents filming their children getting involved in accidents and they prefer to film their kid getting hurt than helping them. If something bad happens to someone, you could say it’s just their karma, but that could also be considered the result of the other person neglecting their own duty. It seems no one knows what is their duty anymore, not even parents in relation to their children, what to speak of the rest of society.
Hare Krsna.I would like to answer the last question asked to Maharaj about how having minute independence in situations makes us fully responsible and accountable for the activities in those situations.This apparent anomaly can be understood from the fact that even those situations in which we are put in are also ordained upon us according to our previous karmas and activities.Suppose one is in a completely helpless situation and there is very little that he/she can do about it then definitely the thiests or even athiests would advise such a person to surrender to the Supreme Lord who can rescue him/her from that situation but that helpless situation was also the arrangement in accordance of his/her previous activities/karmas.Similar is the advice by saintly persons to people even when one is in our comfort zone when we perceive us to be fully independent to still make our choices consciously according to the dictation of the Supreme Lord through the words of scriptures and Guru so that apparent minute independence in difficult situations becomes complete dependence on the mercy of Lord Krsna and Guru.When one is in the perfected liberated state,one always desire to serve the Lord in any situation which is the state we devotees aspire for. One of the quotations of Srila Prabhupad of independence day is that real independence is complete dependence on the mercy of Lord Krishna.
