There's another video of Mark playing the same bass back in 2018. I think Greg nailed it.
I've been playing an 81 Standard (Red) for 41 years. Been through many other basses but this is the only keeper. It's my favorite bass ever.
A beautiful bass AND bassist - kudos Greg!!
What a great passionate intro !
All i saw was a guy in the Gibson ads use one :)
Rock THE HOUSE this weekend !
Thank you very much Greg. They also did a fretless. Just what the Doctor ordered!
Great review Greg!!
Got one, love it!!
Man I own this exact bass, I am in the middle of the restore and I love it so much!
The only musician I ever saw use one of these was Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü.
Never thought I would like a bass demo but this guy knocked it out of the park. More bass demos Norm.
Wow that thinks sounds killer 👍
Gibson finally got the bridge right.
Looks like the typical after market Schaller '3D' bridge
@@santrixhimself3679 because that's what it is.
@@santrixhimself3679With Gibby anything other than the 2 or 3 point bridge is a mass improvement.imo
That can do Mel from GFR!
Did Mel ever play one ?
@@earlspearl2933 Not that I know of. I meant the sound.
@@barackmycat9448 0kay . he was bout the top dawg in that style he played .
@@earlspearl2933 I played an EB 1 Gibson with a Traynor amp back then. I couldn`t get that sound.
@@barackmycat9448 looks like Fender and Music Man gonna stay at the top of the pile . i had a great Traynor and then messed up and let it go
Greg always makes Thumpin' Thursday fun.
Thanks Paul-we all try to make it fun and informative, hopefully entertaining!?!
That pickup was a Bill Lawrence design.
Im not a bass player , but if i was this would be the one..❤
Interesting bass. I love the versatility.
Hey finally a guitar I actually own!
Lay lady lay, lay across my big brass bed...I long to see you in the night...easy to play song there...my folks had a brass bed they bought in the early '70s. Turned 16 in November of '82 and started driving my dads '73 Chevy orange and white truck from when he was a carpenter then general contractor. Got a ticket the first day for "cruising" through a park next to the high school with Cheap Trick pumping out the windows...was glad he didn't smell anything...;-)~...The '80s through the '90s were the best decades...peace
weenie lol
I have a red one not sparkled, completely stock with little play wear. Bought it because I had never seen one. My go to bass always fender (68 blonde j bass). As well as a couple or others. Sold my 69 ebo and 72 eb2 had no use to me as anything other than to collect.. the victory is actually a real bass love it
You know too much . 😁
Loiter me Floyd
It's from the future: Because 1982 is where the future comes from! ☘️
Seeing Greg is how I tell what day of the week it is
Nice bass. Great playing Greg.
Jen's Woo-Woo's are so powerful now! Let's hear her sing! 😀
I was unaware that Gibson made a bass that makes such badass sounds. Until today.
That bridge is just a tank!!!!!
Greg just had to go Subterranean at the end there... 😆 Killer demo!
You guys should do an EB-3 for thumpin Thursday
Love Greg’s thumpin’ and his evergreen positive mood and expertise. Nice one.
Greg is awesome
a vintage dingwall bass hahaha
Turn the bass up we can't here them on our pho
👍👍👍very good
Badass
Lucas from King Gizzard uses one
Is bether than gibson grabber g3 guitar bass?
What a gem of a bass
Thumpin' Thursday with Greg Coates is always cool and fun to watch, man. Kalamazoo! (fellow Michigander here)
What is Norm asking for that beauty?
It sold 😖
Wicked bass
The bridge is a Gibson-stamped Schaller 3D-4, slightly remodeled for this bass (and some Explorers), so any wonder it's one of the best bridges on a vintage Gibson ;)
Rare bass guitars
Mr.G in the house. You should play that bass at Saturdays gig. Good luck with your gig.Gold top Gibson. If the Who ever need a bassist , you would be a perfect fit. Great bass tones.
Thank you Roger!!!
The Who are a HUGE influence on me and I’ve performed Tommy on stage many times. A good friend of mine,Scott Devours, has been drumming for both Roger Daltry and The Who on and off over the last decade or so-waiting on that call!!!
I’m a direct descendant of “The Ox”,for sure!
@@gregcoates4281 it's great to see such an amazing talent as your self. I think we've all taken some from the Ox. He had an amazing bass tone. Rock on man ,slappa da bass!!!!!!! Have you ever tried a Sonic Maximizer. It's either in pedal form or rack mount unit. It will enhance your bass tone.
@@rogercardenas111 I use the BBE units for playback of MP3’s and WAV files to give them some “air” also have used them for p.a. EQ’s on the main stereo mix.
Tech head and bassist great combination. Stay safe man 😷🤓👍 and take care. Rock on man!!!!!!!!
👌
A lot of people say those Basses are the worst Basses Gibson made. Apparently krist Novoselic of nirvana got one and said it was so bad he smashed it the same he got it. But how should I know I’ve never played one
Nice post. I had a fretless version back in the late 80s - loved it and now I miss it.
Greg, I'm born, raised, and still living in Kalamazoo. Love your playing!
Much love to you in the ‘ZOO!!!
Have an Oberon for me…???
@@gregcoates4281 HAHAHA I'll have a couple.
@@tinman8518 THE BEST!!!
Bells iz THEEEEEE SHIT!!!
@@gregcoates4281 After Gibson moved to Nashville, a lot of their employees came to work at Upjohn where I worked. Got to know a lot of them and heard some great guitar stories. Worked with a man named John Coates too. Maybe relation of yours??
Keep thumpin' Greg!
Gibson basses IMO are waaaaay underrated. I own The Ripper model (thanks Gene Simmons). Ergonomically they are a bit unruly, but build construction and tone is awesome...
These are such underrated guitars! So cool to hear! Great job Greg! However! Gotta do a Maton!
hey.does Maton even make basses?
That looks and sounds amazing
I hope Greg buys the bass
If I could I would, this one really resonated with me
@@gregcoates4281 I was thinking there is prolly a rule bout that
@@earlspearl2933 yeah the rule that I’m a broke ass mofo with too many basses already…
