I love this! However, I am a teacher of 7th grade so I had to edit out the name of the rooming house, the Crude Cordelia segments, and some of the film portion. It would be great if people would create a 'clean' version for kids!
I think that's kinda the point of the Renaissance. To show the gritty nature of life and still celebrate the beauty. Unfortunately, there was no clean version for them (and still isnt for many people of color). However, working with kids myself, I do understand that we must filter some things to present to them. But as they come of age, I'd encourage you to show them the truth. That name was derived as a reaction of the times...to have them believe they called themselves any different would be to water down history. Just something to consider.
I don't know why people continually cite Jazz as the greatest accomplishment. Consider: Jazz is a subset of Blues. The distinguishing feature in Blues is the dominant 7th; whereas Jazz implements 9ths, which is far more dissonant. Jazz has a fairly close influencial sphere; although it has been combined with some South American (Brazillian) influences. Whereas Blues has manifested in multiple ways, such as Delta Blues, juke joint blues, country blues, city blues, Chicago Blues, etc.. Plus, Blues has influenced Rock, Country & Western, and Pop music. IMHO Blues has influenced far more genres than Jazz ever has and when you translate this into the record industry, the powerful influence of Blues becomes readily apparent. That being said, we can see some Jazz influence in the use of embellishing 9ths in Rock and some other areas of contemporary music, in terms of mass consumption, has evolved.
