Thank you. I do not have the high grass you do that is why I use an electric weed eater, it is weaker than your machines, but it does the job for me. You have helped me in many ways. I am 76 years old and still do my own yard work and garden work. Our bodies are made to work and our minds are made to solve problems. I never get old in my head because I keep active.

Im on about 65 hours with my KM 131 and i love this machine. Just did my first valve adjustment it was real easy. Love the sound. Thats some serious grass and weed wacking by the way i do these kinda jobs all the time especially in spring.

We have the exact same one at work. Those harnesses are lifesavers. I've cleared easement roads with 8 foot tall blackberrys with realative ease with the stihl metal blades 💪

I've had my FS 131R since the end of the 2018 season, ~16 gallons of gas later and the power is phenomenal! I run ".105 Echo Black Diamond line and couldn't be happier! Took down "3.5 sumacs with a tri-wing blade!

I bought one of these FS 131s last week so I had to watch when Stony Ridge got one too. I have not used the string trimmer yet. I bought this mainly to get rid of these 6ft tall weeds we have on our property that are in places I cant take the brush hog. I am using the blade attachment. The one I got allows for different attachments as well like a pole saw. We need this for trees on the property but there are several other attachments. Stihl made what I needed so I bought it. I love the blade attachment so far. It is taking down these no joke weeds that get 1.5"-2" thick really fast.

Love the 131! It's heavy and strong and big fuel tank. I have the loop handle and usually run it edging with one hand sometimes. I run on avg 8-10 hrs 6 days a week. No issues other than wearing out the bump head!

I spent many (many!) happy hours running a Stihl brushcutter with a 3-point steel blade, on a harness. I used it mostly around lakes and along riverbanks when I was in a fishing club. It did a decent job on regular grass but really shone in the thicker stuff like brambles, bracken, reeds and saplings. I cut branches up to 2 inches thick off trees (not recommended usage, but it needed doing) and, with a little more care, it even did a reasonable job on the lawn at my parents house when I couldn't be bothered with the mower. I never bothered with anything other than the 3-point blade. It was a beast, but the harness meant you really could work all day without a problem. My only issue would be the way it would sling supersonic slugs at your face! It had a guard, but goggles were absolutely essential. I worked with it for at least 5 years, never even had to change the plug. Just a brilliant piece of kit.

I used to work grounds crew at Vincennes University. We used Echo brand. Those things don't quit! They tried getting a couple Stihls, but not many liked them. Great video! Oh, an my Echo is going on 10 years, haven't even had to change the spark plug!

Coming from years of Stihl Training and working on trimmers. You are more effective leaving the guard on a keeping your RPM higher also a clean edge on string from cutter. I have a lawn company who does 4 large cemeteries in our area. Those guys trim more in a day than most would ever consider and they have tried it with and without guard. They swear it cuts faster and trimmers last almost a1 year longer going with the guard on. The oregon string is awesome string been using for years!

I have 2 of the FS90R Stihl Trimmers. Have had one for over 8 years and just went this year to buy a new one. The new one is an FS91R but the same trimmer.
I also have a BR600 Backpack blower. Love my Stihl Products.
Just got tired of dealing with junk that was meant to only last one season.
The only suggestion I have is getting a SpeedFeed head for it. Makes loading sting SOOO fast and easy. I wrap the string around my arm from elbow to wrist 6 times and I know It's just enough to fill the head. No taking the head apart to load string. You line up an arrow on the head and feed the line in one side, pull it through evenly twist the head to load the string. I usually cut an extra load and stick it in my back pocket.

  • @ronhart4166
    @ronhart4166 5 років тому +15

As a pro I can tell you that the 131 is a sweet unit. You will see it will get even stronger once you put a few tanks through it. The only tip I would suggest is to get the "speed feed 400" head and you will have a perfect machine. The speed feed has a quicker reline and easier bump feed. I also like its ability to scalp ditches . It allows you to cut the grass a 1/4 inch shorter than the stock head. If this machine doesn't please you the next step will be the "FS250R" brush cutter . This thing will take down 1/2 saplings !!! Tear through wooden fences !! RIP FLEASH TO THE BONE !! IT IS A MONSTER 🤣

Good afternoon. I bought the FS 311. Largest model for a homeowner. I also bought the brushcutter blade looks like a Chinese throwing star, only example I could think of.
Some harness as you have, saves my back, shoulders and hips. It just eats. I have to give the Oregon line a shot. I've got the. 095 X line its doing good. Its Lime green in color.
    Be safe

I got the same machine a few months ago just with the regular handle, with it I got the sawblade that I use for making trails in my woodlot. Its a very good setup for cutting the lower branches off of the trees, getting rid of those ladder fuels in case of a fire. I do also use it for weed eating, that is why I did not buy the pole saw.

If you have more than an acre and are going to use the trimmer regularly for an hour or more, go ahead and pay more to get a "commercial" model that has the solid shaft. The lower models, even the FS 55 and 56 have a flexible shaft and won't hold up over time to extended use. Worked for a Stihl dealer and saw guys running the 55Rs commercially. They held up surprisingly well for being "homeowner" grade but the commercial models do much better. Starting at the FS90 and above they really make a WORLD of difference in performance and overall durability.

That FS131 is pretty nice, I like the bicycle bar handle setup on trimmers, it gives you better control and is easier on you. I have an older commercial grade Stihl FS66 trimmer/brushcutter which has the bicycle bar handle setup and I have brushcutter blades for it also, including a Renegade blade which is great for cutting down small trees. My FS66 may be an older trimmer but it's a beast and I love it!

You would save more time by pushing what you are whacking into the already cut area rather than pushing it into the uncut weeds. Tall stuff, start high and work down to prevent wrap around. I'd keep the guard on to protect you, the machine, and what you trim around. Like others mentioned, probably your bush hog could have done a lot of that work but you were reviewing a product. I enjoyed the review. Great job, Josh!

Stoney Ridge, I also would like to tell you how I enjoy your videos. All your videos are steady, and they don't make me sea sick. I watch some of the UA-camrs that you are going to visit, that have many thousands of subscribers, and they sit in a machine with there GoPro and stick it to the window and film and talk. Well, anyone can do that if there job lets them do it. To me you work very hard on your videos, and that is what makes a good UA-camr. So keep up the great work. And by the way I am a very tinny UA-camr myself. And I am not gifted to be able to speak as good as you do. But I do know quality when I see it, and man you have it. God bless. So say hi to One Lonely Farmer, and wish him well on the weather for me. His last video was a little harsh to bare. He needs to not swear so much. That will cost him subscribers, he is so big , he probably doesn't care. I wish I could get that many subs. But Oh well, were not all made from the same mold.

im a stihl gold tech u made a good choice of trimmer. the fs 90 needs service the unit is running rich likly needs valve adj air filter and fuel filter and carb adj. it will preform so mutch better. another reason the guard is there is to manage the load on the air cooled engine the longer the string the slower the engine turnes and as a result the
cooling fan turnes slower and the engine cant cool and it can melt the plastic cam ive seen it many times

Hello Josh, I feel your pain in the back trying to find any way to get your tools and just general things in life to fit proper I am 6'4" tall. I have also had the misfortune of breaking my low back and crushing a few discs when I was 18 and have had a couple full blown surgeries and countless less invasive procedures done over the last 35 years. Finding a simple thing like a long enough rake or shovel handle is nearly impossible which leads to more stress and pain in the low back. It is a never ending cycle, being big & tall has its advantages sometimes but I would much rather be average height when it comes to most things in life because when your as tall as we are the world just don't fit and not comfortable!
As far as removing the safety guard that is risky business especially if your using high strength high quality line. Good line don't break easily and if you hit a T-post or fence wire just right and your tired and that machine kicks back the string can cut through jeans like a hot knife through butter and makes a mess of your ankle and calf...(Not that I have any first hand experience...lol) I believe you where wearing Carhartt work bibs in the video, I am not sure if the material in them is strong enough to withstand the weed washer string or not but I know I won't have my leg in a pair to test it....lol
I do however highly recommend reinstalling the guard back on the trimmer it will save your lower leg and ankle from looking like hamburger if the business end of the trimmer ever decides to bit. Trust me having the gunk..grass, dirt, and Lord knows what else that gets in-bedded in your leg isn't much of fun and the resulting infection and oozing is even worse. Please don't risk it.....I don't want anyone to go through that.

Hand Trimmers are very useful and definitely have their place in really difficult to reach places. I have a Sting Trimmer MOWER to clear thick weeds and grass on my property. A trimmer mower would have worked great on the patch of weeds and most of the pond bank you trimmed. Compared to the $500 Sthil trimmer...String Trimmer Mowers sell somewhere about $250--$350.

Funniest thing here: am actually a srs Ego fan, owning - and LOVING - their mower, hedge trimmer, blower, and chainsaw! But somehow couldn't imagine I could get the POWER at the HEAD to rly get animalistic on some of the hefty shit I have to contend with on my property. I even have the 5ah battery that came with that chainsaw, so... I dunno, MAYBE the Ego trimmer won't have quite as much cojones as this 131, but wow, thinking about how much smoother the care and use would be, and how CALM these tools are relative to their gas counterparts (that Ego mower has made my lawn-time pretty blissful, in fact), perhaps you've caught me just in time to redirect. Will watch a few more vids and decide. Thx, Bruh. 😎💪😎

Hi Stoney Ridge, I watch your video every day, and you do a very professional job on your channel, I work for a city municipality and I am forced to use the Stihl. I don't really now the number on it, but I don't like it as good as the Green Machine. Now if you want something that will nock down corn, the Green Machine is your friend. "BUT" I don't even know if they still make it or not. But I wish that Stihl would make one as good. So far to me Stihl is still a consumer-grade no mater what model. I kept on telling the boss we need something for guardrails. Because for some reason they have what is known in Wisconsin, is chicory weed, and all it does is grab your sting and rip it off. And every couple of minutes you have to restring the darn thing. But when we used to have the Green Machine, I could go for a whole hour with out restringing it.So why can't these companies make a weed wacker that has enough power to cut thistles down. We can't seem to find one.

The fs131 sounds like the perfect machine for that application but make sure you get a standard fs131 not a fs131r!

Use a tractor mounted sickle bar mower to mow around the pond and the other areas. It's even faster than the new string trimmer.

I found an FS-130rz at a garage sale last weekend, started on 1st pull but the output shaft was not spinning on throttle up. For $20, I figured what the heck, how much would a new shaft cost? So I stripped it down today, and found that someone had let the clutch get wet, at it rusted up in the contracted position. After a good wire wheel cleaning, and some new lube on the solid shaft, reassembly, and it runs and cuts great. Beats the heck outta my old 4 cycle Ryobi.

Looks like an estate trimmer would be a better choice for your areas that you are trimming. I have the same 90 as you have and love it.

Stihl has an updated string trimmer head instead of the old 25-2 head. The 26-2 has the ability to restring the head like the Echo 400, only it is not quite as easy. The 26-2 also has better eyelets that keep the string from breaking as much.

If you think the 131 is faster than your older model you should try a FS240. That thing will speed up your weed wacking another 25-30% and it will never bog down!

I put an fs130 engine from a spare fs130r weedeater onto my rc truck and that thing has enough torque to tow me on a steel cart with wheels and I weigh 240 lbs. It doesn't bog down either, that 130 engine is powerful and hard to stop.

I've been beating the hell out of an FS36 since the 90's. Ive been through two guards, and several large spools of line. I wish I had some steel line, but have found the Stihl x line to be decent. Probably not farm decent though.

    Josh,
Sweet trimmer I'm still running my FS 85R salad chef straight shaft heck at the broom for it I got the Rototiller for the chainsaw attachment for cotton branches really high I love that thing I'll never sell it does the job. And you said in your video is there a reason why I shouldn't remove the card the guard not only protects you from flying stones see you don't cut your legs open if you're wearing shorts but you're wearing pants so it doesn't matter I also can go up into your eyes even under your safety glasses I've had it happen it also keeps the line trim to a certain links so you get optimum Power and rpm at the same time throwing a foot of 12 inches of string around Boggs the machine down and it's really hard on the engine at labors the engine. Are use the stihl line 095 I don't have any issues with it but I willing to try the Oregon they have good aftermarket products do you happen to have a particular model her anything or is it just Oregon 095 ?

I have the low end string cutter by this company, it is a good cutter for me,
Question. Are you just using this grass to demonstrate the trimmers? Otherwise could you use that wonderful JD cutter on this grass,
Around ponds yes you do have to use the string trimmer, stay safe,
    Good video

dang you have 100,000 subscribers ! cool congrats . Uhmm could a tractor and bush hog do any those areas Josh ? Not being a smarty , I live on 22 acres and do a lot with small gear myself:) I bought echo gear ( blower and weed wacker) on returned items from home depot at a discount. I like them both . I use marine grade ( blue stah-bil) fuel additive in every gallon of fuel I buy for home use. You might add the easy to load string feature where you just send 20 ft through ( 10 ft per side) the head and wind it up like a clock to feed in the string? I leave the fuel in all tools , mowers, etc. year round , they always start up first time after a winter of sitting idle. I have 2 stihl chain saws and can not do without them in burlington , nc :) Great video and thoughts :)
