- The stunts in the "Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One" film have garnered a lot of attention. Tony Dokoupil sits down with director Christopher McQuarrie to understand the years of work that went into making those happen. Tony also visits a stunt training facility in NYC to see what he can learn himself.

I thougbt the dialogue in freefall with the cameraman in synch was one of the best pjeces of filming ive ever seen. Full kudos to everyone involved. So fresh, original and very breathtaking. Awesome stuff..
A huge self challenging this actor Tom is just a phenomenon ....and all this to make us happy
I love all Mission Impossible films. I'm so excited to see Dead Reckoning Part 2 coming out in 2025.
Me too! When the credits rolled on Pt 1 I sat there shaken. I thought the whole AI storyline was really gripping. Bummed we haven't heard much at all about Pt 2!
They're rebranding and retooling it. Part 1 did not do what they expected at the box office.
@@justinmj6586 They should've delayed the film to either August or maybe even November. I don't know what they were thinking releasing it 9 days before Barbie and Oppenheimer
The car races in the recent mission impossible is better than Fast and Furious 10. The funnest thing they were both shot in Rome!
Nah. Stop comparing. The hate against F&F is just getting old.
@@jesseowenvillamor6348 But they're right. M:I is better than F&F
@@PranavRajagopalBut there is no need to compare the two franchises.
@@jesseowenvillamor6348 well the goal is not to compare to to point out FF is losing it.
Even with the extreme CGI, it's just going beyond the bars...
My last enjoyable FF is 7. 8, manageable but 9 and 10 are missing on why we enjoyed the movie in the first instance...
@@Idowu_Balogun Shut up. Only toxic fans who just want to feel good on themselves will think that the FF franchise is losing it. 7 is enjoyable compared to 8, 9, 10? Laughable. Stupid fans (and there are so many of them) are just thinking that because it's the last FF movie with Paul Walker and its emotional ending. But if you look at it more closely, the premise and interesting element of that movie (which is Statham's revenge on the crew) which they also teased before the movie was shown, is just a subplot. It's the worst FF movie. Fast X also uses the same premise but focuses and does it effectively. FF8 has a more interesting plot than FF7, and while FF9 is ridiculous with the whole magnet and space thing, at least it tried to give the franchise some heart. Do not try to argue with me. I'm always right.
Director : Let's use CGI
Tom : I am CGI ( Cruise Going Insane)
So excited for part 2. I have loved this franchise.
Agreed. Annoyed it’s delayed to 2025, but I’ll guess it’ll worth the wait. Let them have more time to make this film fantastic.
I think Fallout is the best followed by Ghost protocol.
Dead Reckoning is not even in my top 3 MI movies because it's too long, not a good story, Hayley doesn't fit well with the group, the Mountain jump was not related to the story and although it was really great i didn't liked it in the story that ethan casually landed at perfect place in the perfect time to save Hayley. The best scene in the movie is desert chase scene. The whole AI thing is not good at all.
The reason fallout was so good was because of its story, the twists, the stunts were more grounded and fun to watch and connected to the plot really well.
I just hope they continue to make a new interesting movie after Mission Impossible series, because Cruise just did some phenomenal movies recently like Top gun maverick & edge of tomorrow and even Oblivion & American made were great, fun and interesting
One of the only Film series that's got better with each film and continues to push the envelope on the action they do!
Tom is the best.
No he not
Not really.
Tom is becoming a classic icon❤
I can’t wait for MI8 the mission impossible movies are my favorite action franchise Tom cruise never disappoints
Tom cruise is the greatest action star of all time and my favorite star of all time. A true legend.
Why don't they ever talk about or mention how hard it is for the camera people to also jump with full gear on? They have to be in sync with tom's jump while also turning their body a certain way whilst shooting and keeping tom in frame then they must remember to open their chute before its too late and save the camera footage as well! I would love to hear from them about this process!
The use drones
In those sequences, they used drones. Technology is so far advanced that nothing is "impossible".
@@davidowens2738 not always
@raulcitraro okay i guess they were talking about that scene that used a drone but i have seen clips with other people jumping as well and they dont mention them or interview them usually.
Multiple takes
I tried to lure my cousin Kris to watch this movie at the local theatre where we saw MII back in the day!but the 27 dollar ticket per guy before candy and sodas, was a bit too much for our liking!
Mi love Tom Cruise!❤
Several factors hurt MI:7 - competing against Barbenheiner, elevated production costs due to covid, etc - but I think there's a deeper reason for its failure.
I had fun watching it - the film is well made and I love the idea of an AI villain. The main issue is that it's "more of the same". We've already seen Ethan run desperately, drive vehicles recklessly round global locales, threaten villains, and so on. Long car chase in Europe? Been there. Chase through a sand storm? Done that. Fight through a maze in a foreign country? Been there. Tense finale on a train? Done that. McGuffin everyone wants? Been there too. Etc.
It's a case of diminishing returns - MI:7 is basically the same but not as good as Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, or Fallout. While competent, Dead Reckoning also takes the action to a ludicrous Looney Tunes level at the end, coming a little too close to the Fast & Furious series. No spoilers, but it also makes an egregious misstep that everyone hated (probably just a twist to fool the AI for part 2).
It's solid but not as good as what came before, relying too heavily on spectacle alone when the audience also wants intrigue and character-driven tension/drama. Despite still offering a decent time, the series is showing its age and Cruise needs to move on to other things after part two.
I personally LOVE this franchise since "Ghost Protocol" and - imho - "Dead Reckoning Part One" was on pair with "Fallout", or even better 👍 The only fault is the last act in Switzerland, which is too talky at times and looses its "momentum", despite that jump (it should've been secret, it was WAY too advertised), rooftop fight and train crash. Can't wait for Part Two AND another installment(s) though, because this franchise - like John Wick - keeps better and better, like no other.
PS. I think that there is no bad M: I movie. Even unfairly (for most part) criticized second one has its unique style, music, atmosphere and action, thanks to HK legendary director John Woo.
Cheers ✨
@@Jacques_the_Rooster The "only" fault? No, the entire movie had a problem: virtually every scene is at least 20% too long, and in many cases (desert, car chase, etc.) they shouldn't have been in the movie at all. The series has become nothing but a vanity project now: "look at what I can do!".
@@Mr21scott What are you talking about ? The desert sequence was MARVELLOUS and I personally wish it could've been even a little bit longer ! That "made by IMF" yellow Fiat 500 sequence was supposed to be funny and new - and it was ! What's wrong with people like you ? This is truly the only franchise in cinema's history that keeps on giving, yet there are nay sayers and whiners smh.
@@Jacques_the_RoosterMI2 is the GOAT after the original
The COVID insurance ended being what saved the movie at the box office. Chubb Insurance agreed to cover $100M of the film's production budget, but when it was all said & done Chubb only paid $5M of that policy. Paramount sued Chubb for the remaining $95M dollars and won a $71M reimbursement on the production budget. So the film ended breaking even.
Such a great and genuinely entertaining movie. It deserved to make more money. So wish they did not release it around Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Good Movie.
Has Macquarie worked with Gunn yet
Just thinking of how talented both are makes me hope we get to see them work together on a huge project one day
The story and flair from Christopher while the comedy and vibe from James gets blended
Could make a huge movie or franchise, especially with some of the best crews and actors out there
Tom Cruise is the greatest action star of all time, one of the best actors of his generation.
Dude’s wearing cream Converse. 😅

the name "dead reckoning" was taken off for part 2. so we'll have to see what "MI8" is going to be called now. should be interesting. i was a little underwhelmed with mi7 in theaters. i think the release of the making of the jump took some away from the thrills since i saw that a bunch before the movie. but i wasn't a huge fan of the story overall in MI7. i thought MI6 was a lot better. i hope MI8 can do better.
Still got lot to learn from the Jackie Chan movies stunt
I will spoil Mission Impossible 8.
It's impossible.
Gm sir
Tom cruise is such a lil queen.
He's old now, next
Your parents are too
Why does Tom keep doing his own stunts? I don’t like it / too dangerous and it is not necessary because that’s why they have trained stuntmen.
Cuz he's a daredevil, he wants to do it partly because of the thrill
Its his usp
He's worth 600 million dollars. When you have that much, you can do whatever the heck you want
So stunt people don’t matter? Having A-list celebrities do stunts is great because it makes their work more recognized, and promotes awareness on safety protocols.
Be sure to miss it. Boring.👎
I think the opposite... why boring?
He just wants attention.
Only boring people get bored.
Maybe we can be done with the Mission Impossible movies now. Tom Cruise isn’t believable as an action hero anymore and how many times can you reinvent the wheel?
In Asia she is Hollywood last action movie star
Have you seen the latest one? They keep getting better
Yea ok
Nah you're just jealous
