I just got into using 500 series gear and now have a few eq units. I am just a little confused by the term dual mono. Does it mean two seperate eq units ? or is it a single unit that works as a dual mono unit ?
like e.g I have two 500 series eq units from HRK eq 556, I tried them on a mixbus sending the mix to two seperate buses panned left and right then sent the output of the buses to these units. Is this called a dual mono eq scenario ?

Yes that's dual mono. Two of the same mono units, one processing the left and another processing the right. Just like you have. This video is directly referring to what you have setup.

I agree with everything you point out, could you suggest some Eqs. with those characteristics in the 1000-2000 range; 2000-3000 and 3000; I have heard good comments about the HDE 250A. One question, for an amateur like me, considering all the plugins that exist, do you also think that in my case it would be more useful to think about buying an equalizer more for mastering than for tracking? One question, I don't think I've ever seen you or heard of Pultec-type equalizers, Manley, your opinion would be very interesting. Thank you, a hug Paul

The HDE 250a and HCL Thermos v3 are both really good EQs. Those are both worth considering in that price range. They also have built in mid side which is really good and gives you that option without need a mid side box like the SPL Gemini. The bettermaker mastering EQ is also a great option. I'm not a huge fan of pultec style EQs, it's a personal preference. An EQ is one plugin that gets close to hardware. It's still hugely beneficial to use outboard EQ.

I see you changed your studio gear around? Can we get a studio tour or just a 360 degrees of the setup? I don't see the MBT? Would like to see your full chain, with gear! What is that under the SPL Gemini, I can't tell? I see an elysia under the Iron comp, which is that?

Got some new gear arriving, which required a slight change in the chain. The MBT is in the rack to my right. Under the Gemini is a Buzz REQ 2.2 and the Elysia the a Nveope

@AudioAnimalsStudio Ok, I see! Thanks very much, can't wait to see the new gear and setup, and new explanation of work flow!

I'm a bit confused about how left and right can become mid and side.
I get mid is mono, so I would only need one in and out insert but would assume the side would still be two in two out for an insert.
Seeing as left and right are often not equal.
Like a recording of a stereo mic, left and right isn't equal.
Does the sides become mono side information when using something like the SPL genimi? Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

I've used them before... but haven't tried it with any very obvious part panning material

@TheSakuraGumiLTD The Mid signal contains the information that shows up in both speakers, while the Side signal contains the information that is unique to the left and right speakers.

Paul: "I will always buy a dual mono EQ." Me: *Thinking about the 1954 he's waiting on...*😅... Sorry couldn't resist. I know what you mean though. Good bit of info there about the PQ being a pain to match with all the steps, I hadn't thought about that and that's not something a person would even know until they got their hands on it. And then you mentioned the REQ is more nicely stepped -- guessing that's another reason the Buzz wins for you as your top EQ?

Haha it's actually the 1951 EQ. If they did a dual mono version I would have preferred that. The Buzz is an all round beautiful EQ with a sound of its out. The PQ is more surgical for me and brilliant in mid side for precise EQ of mid and side. I've used the PQ in stereo and it is a pain to match. You have to have it in front of you and look over it at the right angle to match each side.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Speaking of angle, I think I see why you chose the racks that you did. Mine are straight and some of these pieces I nearly have to crane my neck underneath them to see everything lol. I do like flat racks for having the level space on top that's usable, but man could I use some angled racks right about now. Thanks again for all the videos, great info, and engaging discussions. Always appreciated.

@CT-ho6si yeah angled racks are very handy. If you look at the rack to my right I added a flat top to that so I can put my laptop on there. So you can have a flat top on angled racks. I built these at the perfect angle to my eyes in the sweet spot.

@CT-ho6si yes, you know me I like to share my knowledge. I did a video on how to build the racks here ua-cam.com/video/xXcBQuvJgrE/v-deo.htmlsi=ySW7u1QdExVmxgcz
