Hey MJ I really love your channel and have recommended several of my friends to it. I was wondering if you could do an experiment of "CO2+Low light" versus "High Light with no CO2" to see if CO2 or Light is the limiting step? Another follow-up experiment might be to compare "High Light for 6 hours+CO2" versus "Low Light for 9 hours+CO2" to see if a longer duration of low light can compensate for lack of high light. If we can overcome the expensive cost of lighting by using longer periods of budget lights + CO2, it will help with aquascaping using the Biorb and Fluval tanks that look nice but typically comes with poor lighting and very few options to upgrade.
I’m rooting for the low budget as well!! I am biased though I only have lower budget tanks. I would be really curious to see what the tanks look like at the end with the lights swapped, or potentially just with the same light on both tanks? Only for color comparison! It would be interesting to see the coloring variations in the plants between the two tanks after they have grown in different setups.
Iv like to see the difference between fast growing setup versus a healthy growing low budget setup. I'm not looking to do more maintenance just have a healthy planted aquarium. Healthy growth with less trimming. Great video 👍
There's no real way to avoid backflow on a CO2 line, you must use a checkvalve. This happens because CO2 inside the difusser and line will start dissolving into aquarium water. So pressure inside the line will start to drop and draw aquarium water. You could install your checkvalve closer to the tank or even closer to the diffuser to limit the amount of backflow.
Ive been out of the hobby for 6+ years now so my info is out of date. But for checkvalves I was always a fan of the stainless steel metal check valves, and I think a uk company co2art? sells some kind of nice push inline one as well. I think the metal ones can be found on amazon under metal aquarium co2 check valves.
I love the method, but I'd be interested to see the same experiment done with the same light source, of the variables you have selected lighting is the only one that cannot be improvised. I can male a filter and co² system on the cheap buy I can make a light
Some plants that are exposed to more intense light grow shorter, and when exposed to less intense light they grow taller becase they are searching for more light. So the reinecki actually is doing better in the high budget tank.
I am going to make a new tank (dragon stones, dragon woods, Sachem fluorite, Ada starter powders, etc) My question: do you suggest to use carbon in the external filter for the first month?
Love this. Low budget for the win! I have a low budget light atm, curious what you would need to do if you changed to a better high light setup. Slowly increase the light over time? Or can you just increase cow n ferts?
I love the experiment idea! The low budget light seems to be giving off more red light..which could explain the better growth for your alternanthera reineckii? Also, are you run ing ferts in these tanks? Just curious. They're looming good 👌🏽
With the trimming session I removed most of it already, and I think once the plants start growing again they will cover the algae, and it will die by itself. If not I will dose some ''liquid co2''

Great video - really intriguing! Can I ask how you manage to maintain consistent pressure in your DIY CO2 system? I can never quite get it to build up enough to run through a diffuser - I've resorted to placing the end of the tubing in the mouth of the water pump intake. As the bubbles come out they get sucked through the impellor and out into the tank - so they end up very fine but at surface level. I imagine it's a combination of ensuring the system is air-tight, the tubing isn't over-long and the diffuser isn't too deep under water. Any ideas? Love your channel btw
