I'm 54 years old and I remember Rye Playland being one of my family's summer outings. Every year, because I was still too little, I had to stand and wait while my mom and older aunties would ride on this particular ride!! But once I got older, we stopped going. Now I live in Georgia. Well I say I should put this on my bucket list! 🤔🤔😆
Thank you so much for posting this!! This is an incredible memory from my childhood in the 50's..... I loved this ride!!!! I'm so glad to see that it is still there going strong... I did learn that there are only 2 others like it In the world....
It may not look like much but this ride is the absolute best! I love to put my feet up on the highest peg and slap the behind of my horse and pretend I'm in the Belmont stakes.🤗 Been riding the Derby since the 80s.
I remember going on this ride last year and thinking it was just a regular merry go round type thing... I was wrong and it was so fast when I got off I couldn’t stand up lmao
MY absolute favorite in the whole park i was there today the horses still race i rode this about 15 times today and a few times the horses race and sometimes they dont. Regardless even if they dont race still a classic long live the derby racer.
I was fortunate enough to ride this a few years ago. I decided to ride the outside horse and wow, as you can see you have to hang on tight and lean in!
I remember this being super fast, and the horses not only went up and down but back and forth. I noticed They stopped the back and forth movement. It's the best carousel rides ever invented.
Brian Sokoloski I remember waiting to be old enough to ride the Derby at the CNE. Best ride ever! To this day I love all rides, and x Sky diver out of Arthur Ont. But the Derby was my biggest thrill. Probably doesn't look like much to most viewers but it was large horses, powerful and fast back in the day. I think it goes back to 1950 at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition). Great memories.
When we were kids my female cousin threw up all over the place on this and man did we laugh our guts out at her.She was filling her face all afternoon with food and cokes and we hit the jackpot when we got her on this ride
This one is a take on the one at Cedar Point in Ohio except the one in ohio has horses that look like racing horses ..... It also had a soundtrack playing like it was a real race.....
I have been to Playland like 8 times and have never been on this but how is this ride safe? Seems to be a lack of restraints. I guess if you fall you just go with the rotating floor.
There are 0 restraints. Left foot on the lower peg, right foot on the upper peg and you have to lean your body to the left when the ride picks up speed. There is a hoop you hold on to.
That "park paint" on the horses is a disgraceful way to treat this treasure. These horses Charles Illions-carved each had a beautiful, air-brushed paint job and instead of spending the money necessary, they slapped on this awful park paint. This rarest of treasures should be respected.
What a shame that they applied "park paint" to these beautiful horses. This ride was installed in 1928, and is the only of the three surviving Derby Racers that has horses carved by the legendary Charles Illions. It's also the only one that runs fast. A few years ago they were beautifully painted in great detail, but the park decided to cut corners by painting them as simply as they could. I hope one day it is restored to its former beauty.
When my wife and I rode this about 1968, the horses heads dipped up and down jerkily and the ride was really fast. You definitely had to hold on tight and lean left. It was one scarey ride for me. My wife said it was like riding a horse. NO children were allowed on this ride.
I think THIS is the merry go round at Moscone center. The other one at Playland was across the street and all different colors and they LOOKED like Arabian horses. THESE look more like thoughobreds
Moscone center? Playland across the street? What are you talking about? I am totally confused. This IS Playland in Rye, New York. It is 100% definitely for sure Playland. Anyone who truly knows Playland can tell just by looking at the background.
Bruh… you don’t gotta be a buzzkill like everyone else. They should be allowed to do this how they want unless there’s a real reason aside from “not professional”
That's actually one of the memories I had when I first rode this back in '86. I couldn't help but be in awe as the guys hopped on and off. I was just holding on for dear life on the horse.

Such great memories of visiting Rye Playland for our 6th grade "senior trip" from PS 91 in Queens back in 1986. Thank you for sharing this video.

Mary Hirtle The one at blackpool pleasure beach just aint no fun anymore.
Same here. I just found it after 29 years of being there with my children. I love this carousel.
@@danielledewitt1 why not?
@@Salesman Some idiot stopped it racing.
@@danielledewitt1 what do you mean exactly? Is it not working anymore and that idiot refuses to fix it?

THERE WAS A DERBY RACER IN TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA YEARS AGO..i rode that ride in the 1960.s

This might be the best park in New York.
Edit: nvm it’s Coney Island

That sounds hilarious and disgusting at the same time. Haha!
If you don't enjoy this ride you have no business at an amusement park! It's always fun, when you ride it's unlike anything else out there.
Tom Y. I used to enjoy blackpool pleasure beach’s derby racer but then it stopped racing and they never fixed it so it’s now just a merry go round.
@@danielledewitt1 well now it’s not the same ride anymore then.
@@marinadiaz1762 Certainly isn’t the same ride. It’s now derby loser.
@@danielledewitt1 Yeah so I just wouldnt compare those anymore. if its a merry go round now, that aint the derby racer. Its just the kids ride
@@marinadiaz1762 It still says derby racer but no it’s not.
This was a great ride. Dragon coaster was always the first and last ride Derby Chase was always second.
We need this ride here in Orlando, Fl.
See that fence around? When I was a kid, got my knee stuck watching my Nana ride. 👍😂
Buick Invicta The Germ was here.

How tall do u have to be to ride these
There off in the Kentucky Derby!!!
My favorite ride
Sucks that they actually stopped the horses from racing and kept them static.
They fixed it so the horses are now moving back and forth.
Thank you for your reply. Is there any video on it yet?
I may have one.
I just uploaded a new video. Its called Playland Derby Racer. Horses moving back and forth.
Thank you for sharing your video.
The horse are supposed to move back and forth like there jockeying for position the cirder point Derby downs
Yeah, but that one runs at half the speed of the Playland one. I'll take double the speed over the jockeying.

I never got to go on this ride.
The ride is still there. If you get the chance, ride it. They fixed it so the horses move back and forth.
well done
The milder version the carousel burned down in 2020.
It caught fire in 2017. It has been restored and reopened since then.
The last time I rode this two kids fell off..its awfully fast and extremely rocky..
I had to stop watching when I saw the ride op standing on the table. I work the Cedar Downs Racing Derby at Cedar Point and that would not fly at all!
Vonnie Sweeney operators have been hopping on an off the table since the ride opened in the 1920s
I used to be one of them ...
Bruh… you don’t gotta be a buzzkill like everyone else. They should be allowed to do this how they want unless there’s a real reason aside from “not professional”
every time i rode these the operator was always on the deck riding around with us as kids
