How to Cheaply Weatherproof the Cable Connections Points on Your CCTV System

  • This is a cheap and easy method if you want to weatherproof a low voltage cable connection such as a security CCTV camera system. Bear in mind, this method should only ever be used on low-voltage products, and I cannot guarantee it will 100% work. For this all you need is a bicycle inner tube preferably one that is thin as possible in diameter and a few cable ties. This shouldn't cost you much more than £2 in total.

Installing CCTV for nearly 20 years now. It costs about 4 quid for 10 meters of self amalgamating tape. This is the recognised way of waterproofing mechanical fixtures outdoors.Your solution is left wanting and misleading as water/moisture ingress is assured without the use of am tape with your suggestion.I appreciate the likes of you keeping me in business!

Or just put one on top of a waterproof box...

I for one appreciate your video. I had the same question as you and am not an electrician so I was not aware of amalgamating tape and didn’t think heat shrink would shrink small enough after getting a size that would go over the connections. Not knowing this, I thought your idea was brilliant! I think I would use hot glue to seal the ends better though. It’s because of your video that I read in the comment section about amalgamating tape. It was nice of people to suggest this to the uninformed, but they could at least be humble about it. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Why not just use shrink tubing? Its good enough for cars and boats...

I will use this procedure seems pretty sound and secure. A squirt of silicone at the ends would absolutely water proof it. An alternative for the inner tube are milk shake silicone straws there pretty wide and will house most connections wen not so bulky. Once you have the wires in you just fill ends with silicone and presto. will last for yrs also. Great video man thanx 👍

You really need a 13 minutes video to show how to cover cable connections with bicycle inner tube? Lets be serious...

Just use a plastic pattress box with a blank lid/cover. Run the cable/cables in from the bottom. Looks so much better than a Fred Karno job.

Exactly how I did mine except I made a loop with the tubing so the two ends hang straight down making it impossible for rain water to seep in. I got the two ends snug but not too tight allowing it to breath and avoid condensation inside. I checked it after almost two years and everything still looks new.

Not sure what country you live in but here in the US we have heat shrink waterproof shielding in all sizes and for all voltages which are very inexpensive and are made for this. Your idea is like taking plastic wrap and taping it to make a bag for storage instead of buying a ready made sandwich bag.

(question) I have big hands that make a HORRIBLE time twisting the fittings ON/OFF from back of my Lorex DVR. Do they have simple 3" pigtails that I could purchase as to have those dangle my actual eight(8) cables for me to troubleshoot etc ? I'm always having a hell of a time keeping all my cameras up and running with the ocean being one block away. My house is always foggy too. Thank you so much for consdering to answer this question.

Balloons can also do the trick if you can't get your hands on an inner tube. Or self amalgamating tape or heat shrink wraps as a last alternative.

After a short time of thermal expansion/contraction and capillary action your connections inside will be wet... as other have said, self amalgamating tape is the way to do it.

Number one: If have water or ANY moister in there AT ALL . You are in big trouble and need a whole differant kind of work. Next Just get some " electrical spegeti " which the name given plastic tube ,of differant diameters ,which shrink when heated with a match. This hold the connecters together. AND if you are OUTDOORS you cac seal the end after you shrink to fit ,with a dap of tub chalking at each end. Take care....

Or use some heatshrink - the type that has an inner layer of adhesive.

So does the camera is water proof and water burns it if it reaches the cables ? A question might sound stupid but i really don't know if the can be installed in open areas or have to be under a roof.

Oh FFS ! buy the proper SA tape , it cost about £3 online, wrap the connection first with electrical tape [easier to remove at a later date if required]THEN SA tape to keep the moisture out.
If anyone reading this is having problems with their system ? just cut the cables off and save yourself a lot of wasted time and effort, you will NEVER remove the moisture once it is in the connectors, just bin them and buy new cables and do the connection properly next time.
    I AM speaking from experience.

What the man is doing in the vid will NOT keep wind driven atmospheric moisture out of the connectors, they will succumb .

I have a much cheaper weatherproof solution. It's called electrical tape.

Firstly, why are the connection points exposed and not on THE INSIDE or in a CONDUIT?
Secondly, like many others have said, tape or heat shrink would be much more effective and aesthetically pleasing.

First observation, why don’t you just use self amalgamating tape like everybody else? Where on earth are you going to put this innertube when it’s folded up it will never fit into a junction box! Also, if you have to use zip ties on the ends of the rubber tube why don’t you just click them together before you start folding the rubber tubing Then you’ve got a hand free and only use one hand to pull the zip tie tight

Lets l help this poor guy out and brainstorm a list of other things that could be used to better weather proof cables.
You can use your tire and zip ties and add some chewing gum into the ends that would be a good start. Or scrap that idea and get some duct tape... Or some hot glue l!!! Yeah just smolder on a mountain of hot glue.
Hest shrink was already said to work... Ooh I got an idea instead of w tire how about a balloons !!! Balloons hot glue gum and duct tape !!.!? And zip ties !! Or use Condoms for protection. may be a better option. Holy moly what else can we use that's cheap efficient readily available .:..I'm running low on ideas ....

Pretty ugly, inner tubes for £1?....4 years on and they cost about $10 US. That would be hella inflation, never heard of inner tubes that cheap. For less than $10 I can get a conduit box and not have to look at a tire hanging off of the house.
