- My attempt at playing Vince Guarldi's "Linus and Lucy" on the piano, including the middle swing part and the jazzy bit near the end. Haha, I make a bunch of mistakes and the audio quality isn't great, but I'll fix that another time. =)
I don't know how to play almost anything else, but I'm going to try to make a how-to video for this one at some point. =)
I just stumbled upon this wonderful piece, and you played it wonderfully! Not only is this a very difficult piece, but you memorized it too. This is now 2016, and I'm sure you have ended up being a fantastic musician!!! Thanks for sharing your great talent!
Wow, you're very modest about your talent, but dude you've got mad skills. You play it really clean, and I love that you included all of the middle stuff, it makes the song whole. Great job!
great job man I want a piano so bad ive wanted one for a while this is what i plan on learning as soon as i get one. how long have you been playing?
Benoit plays it much faster, Guaraldi played it slower. It's all good when well played - and this certainly was that!
Sounded good to me, Bud!
How can anyone thumbs this down??? This is awesome!!!!!!
DAMNED GOOD !!!! You should be real proud of yourself !! When I heard this playing , I thought it was Vince Guaraldi !! KUDOS to you by the ton !!!! Don't EVER let ANYONE put you down for your musical skill !! You keep playing like that and one day soon you just might have YOUR name up in lights !!! Then you can say you got your talent and inspiration from Vince !! Copying is the HIGHEST form of compliment !! He'd be proud of you !!! CHEERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vince always made it sound so easy, but it's not. Admirable job on a difficult piece! :o)
Wow, that was a fantastic job! Very good. I wish i had on tenth of your talent!!!
That was very good. I just finished listening to this on Guarldi's album. Just needs a little more tempo.
No, the Ab isn't out of tune -- the whole PIANO is out of tune. ;)
Actually, the piano isn't bad -- the real problem is that the video compression messes with sound quality.
11 years, wow, i saw this video so many years ago, and i tell you, this inspired me back then to keep learning. Beautiful piece, great interpretation, thanks man. Just come here again after a while ;)
I recorded a short version of this last Christmas and am working to perfect the long version for this year. Your solo here is still the gold standard on UA-cam (beginner or not). Great job!
Jeesh, your piano is like so gorgeous
THERE YOU ARE....I've literally been scrolling through countless video for days to find you! One of my favorite UA-cam renditions! 😊
Lovely job sir! I also have been teaching myself. (Only for about 2 years) on piano. So far, I only learned a few parts of Fur Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven. I aspire to be just live you eventually! Fantastic job!
Sounds of my Youth....Smiles and stays awhile to remember back when!! Cheers
The Charlie Brown shows were all pretty crappy, but the music was outstanding. I don't see a date on this video, but some comments go back 14 years. I really hope you kept on with your music. It is one of the few hobbies that you can truly enjoy for your entire life.
I dont even need to finish to say....that was effing awesome, man! Excellent job! Im learning this myself and this is going to take awhile. Most of my experience is in classical so this is VERY different lol
Great job! Sounds nice! I just finished the whole song and I absolutely love it! Such a classic piece.
13 years ago... Time to time i return here, now could be a good time to heard it from you again. I salute you my man
An excellent solo performance of Linus and Lucy that Vince Guaraldi would give a high mark of success.
@XLovxEscxThexFteX Practice both hands separately, once you can do both without mistakes and at a reasonable pace, then begin to put both together. This is not an easy song, especially the jazz sections. Be patient, practice at least 2 hours a day, and you will have this song by Christmas.
Hi guys, I really *am* working on a tutorial now. I have some rough videos made but not uploaded -- my crappy webcam does a horrible job of syncing audio and video, so it takes 15-20 minutes of post-processing to get things right.
I might buy a camcorder to fix the problem, but I don't want to spend $600 just to make UA-cam videos, so we'll see.
Naw, I make enough mistakes that you should know the video is real. It has to do with the video being encoded slower than the audio (frames being dropped and such fiddle-faddle). I tried fixing it, but I don't have good software to do it. Hopefully any new videos will be better -- I'll eventually redo this one too. =)
Cool stuff. Can't be much of a critic seeing as playing an instrument is something I can't do. One thing though: Go buy a good mic. I am sure you would be able to find a video camera type mic. I know I prefer my video camera as an audio capture device over my mic any day. I am sure it wouldn't be hard to find one. Just a suggestion to fix the quiet voice.
I'm a beginner. It took me 3 months to learn at about three hours a week. I'd call it an advanced piece, especially the second/third interludes (or whatever they're called). That being said, 90% of it is syncopating the left & right hands, which really just takes slow practice.
Great job! I love that song . . . I use to listen to this whole thing all the time when I first got the album. You were really able to capture the spirit of the song. Thanks so much . . .that brightened up my evening ( I just dropped my keys down a storm drain about 2 hours ago- bummed out
Thanks
It kinda pains me now to watch how out of sync this is, and how bad the audio is, especially me blabbing for 30 seconds.
I've got some "tutorial-possibles" created for the beginning of the song, but I don't think they're good enough yet to post, so I'll see what I can do.
(In response to two hands for the ending) -- I started by learning it with one hand, but it sounded choppy. I was taking lessons at the time and my teacher suggested I try it with two hands -- it worked much much better. So I guess you could say I was taught that way. =)
Pointers:
Most of the people on youtube that played this song did some type of modification to it.
I learned it just by listening to the song, and looping parts over and over. I dont know the full song ( the little jazz part ) but I know the main parts. Just listen to it 1million times.!
You are Super. You are the first I've seen to play the whole thing!! You have the "Right Stuff". You are good now, You are going to be Great!!! I love your humble, wholesome attitude. We need more of that. You are Gifted and Talented! Mikie D.
Send me a PM with your email in it and I'll attach this version. It's hard to find -- it's labelled "Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi", with nothing about it being the Peanuts Theme Song (because the peanuts theme doesn't have the middle interlude).
If you're looking for the sheet music, you can send me a private message with your email address and I'll send you a very rough scan of the original version. I recommend buying it (if you can), but I know sheet music prices are stupid.
Great Job !!! I have been playing this tune since 1975 and back then they didn't have the sheet music. It took forever to figure it out. You have it down. Get you a bass player and a drummer and you may be the next Vince. Great Job
This works well for people with a good ear (like you!), but not necessarily for the majority (listen to a few on UA-cam and you'll understand what I mean). =) Ugh, I've been working too much lately, but I really really want to make a tutorial.
You're playing an arrangement or a version by someone else -- this is Vince Guaraldi's own transcription (I have two copies)... I can send you the notes too if you'd like. "dassassin" at Gmail is my email, I'd be interested in seeing your version.
I just listened to 5 Linus and Lucy videos. I like yours the best. The other's were too fast and the pianos were "tinny sounding". I like the sound of your piano. Also your playing is good as well.
That was good! One of my favorite parts fo Charlie Brown was the song were Snoopy and woodstock go down the sidewalk to this music. The music made so much of it. You just can't listen to this music and not be happy. Thanks.
Google might not have the full version of the music -- most "charlie brown" versions either aren't transcribed by Vince or leave out the middle part. The complete version was almost $10 to buy, which is a little ridiculous.
I have Linus and Lucy here on my channel showing the keys at both normal speed and played slowly if you want to learn it. Even knowing the keys, it's still a challenge :-)
Enjoy!!!
huge props, that was really excellent. attempting to take on any more then just the basic theme is ambitious to say the least, and you did more then attempt it! well done!
Excellent, fluent, sounds. You are going to grow up tok be a Vince Gauraldi shadow.
It'd be the most amazing pretend ever! And I'd make sure not to make any mistakes if I was pretending. ;) (Video/Audio are out of sync because of the crappy laptop webcam I'm using).
way to go young man !!! i can tell you that advanced pianists on you tube don't even bother with that jazzy part you did.keep it up.
It's a super-cardioid boom mic, so the problem is, to get even sound, I'd have to *wear* it. I didn't know this at the time. Next time (the tutorial) will be better.
You did a wonderful job of this. One of the best one I've seen actually. You've also helped me get some of the rhythm down as I'm working on the same one you're playing. Thank you!
Actually, this is quite good. Those transitions are tough but you added your own jazzy touch. I don't know what state you live in but I am from South Georgia and lived in Athens Georgia from 1980 till 2002. I figure you know that a Grand Piano can be purchased for less than half it's value. I was doing a search on Craigslist and came across a Bosendorfer Grand Piano in South West Georgia for an absurdly great deal.
I am not a pianist but I know a incredible tone when I hear it. U R good> DC
Question: i'm an advanced player, and I've been looking for the sheet music to this song. The book that is on your piano, is that worth buying? I'm trying to buy it, but from the reviews, I really cant tell if it has the swing and jazz part in it, cause all of the 'free' stuff I found doesn't have any of the extra parts....if not, do you know where I can find sheet music that has the ENTIRE song in it, or did you learn certain parts by ear?
Thank you!
It took me a solid month-and-a-half to get that song completely put together, and I often came and looked at this video for references when I couldn't get the beat. I play it a little bit faster, but you keep the tempo steady very well throughout the whole song. I don't know what grade this is, but it definitely isn't grade two; I'm entered to play this in the grade nine pop music class next month. It's amazing that someone in a grade two level can learn to play this. wtg!!
This one of the very few performances of L&L (and there are *MANY* now on youtube) where the perfromer actually executed the 3rd part of the piece which is kind of a west-coast 'bop' jazz feel. Nearly all the vids have the performer playing just the very familiar, very safe 1st part. You did the 2nd and the daring 3rd part too. You did a great job, maybe just a tad choppy, but when you get the final part down you'll be ready to try it with a jazz trio. Sounded great, keep it up!
So cool. I used to play this with my ex., but I don't play piano,so he taught me the bass, and he played the treble. The syncopation was tough, so he couldn't play it by himself. He wasn't an accomplished pianist either, but he could read the music because he took piano lessons when he was a kid. We are both guitarists, and we had his family piano in our house. It was fun. You are awesome! :) Keep playing!
Hahaha, thanks. I've been busy with work and school prep so I haven't made a tutorial... I should really force myself to do it. Maybe soon?
Thank you so much for doing that. I am a piano teacher and didn't know how to teach my student those difficult jazz and swing parts. I will send her your video. It was amazing. Did you just pick and choose the notes to play in the jazz part and swing part. What are the little bass notes at the bottom of the staff in some parts: An option?
Don't ever sell yourself short - this is an AMAZING rendition of a hugely famous tune and you did a superb job!! I wanted to share some Charlie Brown Christmas spirit on my FB page - searched the song title and your video (along with others) came up. I chose this one to share. It was just too 'real' and too great not to! Thank you for sharing your video. :)
Hey i have to learn this on the piano for my dad for christmas. I only have a few more weeks to learn before my residual and if i don't learn the whole thing he'll get mad. I'm taking lessons but i can't seem to get it down and i'm stressing out. Please Help if you have any suggestions. I'm stuck on the middle section.
In regards to my previous comment about timing being off, this was not meant as an insult or criticism. Actually, I have played this piece and do know just how hard it is to play. It was just as I listened, it seemed (tentative word) that there was only one real slip in time that I heard. Keep up the good work. You play very well. Regards.....LML.
WOW!!! Parts of that sounded JUST like Guaraldi's original (especially the bass!) but part of it sounded like YOU!!! I first heard this as a kid when they first aired the Peanuts Halloween cartoon around 1965. Keep working on the piano, you are a great jazz player. AND I hearby nickname you "Vinnie G."
Yours,
Sloppy piano player Michael Baker
nice work you're pretty good, the camera... It seemed off with the sound. I'm judging you by the notes you get right and when i say that i mean looking at the fingers and what you hit. The only other thing i wanted to mention was a nice thing. Good Job by running that off memory, especially at the end, i know it gets hard.
Other than that, Good Job!
I forgot to add:
Good on you for doing the whole thing through. I can barely play the jazzy parts... especially that whole arpeggio thing and the fast runs. Also, the ending you did was awesome.. I have no idea how to play that part. So, good job doing the whole thing, very great performance.
Peace.
Hey Vince! Your alive!
Are you adlibing something on the 1st bridge. I ahve the music, but the bass line on the bridge is different.
I'm 20, I've played maybe 6 months in the past five or six years, I took some lessons as a kid though (levels 1 & 2 of the "Alfred" books).
Dude, so incredibly amazing! I love the shrug at the end. it's like, "yeah, I just totally p0wned on the piano, no big deal" hahaha, great playing! I actually bought that sheet music literally 5 minutes after I heard you, i gotta learn this now. Thank you so much for your brilliance!
i've been struggling with that right hand riff e flat + a flat, F, F + a flat. It looks like you are playing it a bit different. Your way sounds better. Any tips on getting that riff down? Or how exactly are you playing it. I wish youtube had a slow mo feature.
level two my ass! I have been playing for about 8 years now, and there is no way you are up to that song yet unless you have literally spent your life on the piano. an you taught it to yourself?!?!?!?! the music is right in front of you!!!!! so, this leaves me to ask, what year are you?
wow... =) I'm actually just learning how to play this, I think that you're a great inspiration, even though you mess up on some of the parts. i still think it was good :) don't get pulled down by people ragging on you! they're just jealous :) keep on doing other songs!!!
NICE! I've been working on the syncopation for this and I think you've helped me out. Very good job! Vince would be proud of you. Keep it up. Have you heard David Benoit's rendition of this? It's a bit more jazzed up and very funky. I think you'd like it if you haven't heard it before. ALOHA!
Excellent! I really enjoyed your playing, I wish you would play more, heck, I wish I could play like that. On another note, ;) I just want to say the best way to pick up good audio is to mic everything. i.e., yourself and the piano and then mix into the camera.
Keep up the fantastic work!
By the way your video is the best version done with respect to the original. I saw the sheet music on your piano and knew this would be the one to watch. It's a great tune to see the workings of improvisation in written form. You shoud try "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane.
Bought the music for my son to learn. We watched to get some pointers on hand positions. Especially the last 8 measures where you use two hands to play that little run. Did you see someone else play it that way or were taught it that way, or just came up with that on your own?
Wow ! There are people who can be taught to play the piano, but then there are others that have that sort of instinctive touch that can't be taught. You have to be born with it... and you were. You have the "IT factor". It's a gift, never forget that...
I listen to the charlie brown christmas soundtrack about twice a week and I think you did a great job I dont know how to play the piano would like to learn and this song is the one I want to learn most. You have great talent thanks for the video
Great, Great, Great Job!!!! I love that you even attempted such a piece, and did it very very well. I'm a drummer who would love to work with you, because I see a great future in front of you. Bravo dude! Keep up the good work.
that was pretty good, sry, that was an understatment, that was AMAZING!!! this is the song that inspired me to pick up piano, and you just re-instated the reason why i play, your fantastic, it was GREAT, i dont know what else to say!!!
Haha! I have the exact same sheet music as you. I can play it quite well, but I have a bit of trouble on the rythm on the left hand, while the right hand is going.
You play the grace notes amazingly well.... I should practice more.
Good job man.
Dude, thats excellent work :) it sounds very good. i love playing that song myself, and you should learn some more peanuts tunes. and by the way, that middle jazzy part, with a little more latin feel, was that from sheet music, or was it all done by ear?
around 1:59/2:00 sounds like a small mistake, but barely noticeable.
Best performance of this song I've heard. Great job man. 5/5
I don't think my timing was off, the video goes out of sync though. It's pretty close to how Vince plays it himself actually. ;)
I'm not sure the timing is right -- to be honest it probably isn't. I'd love to hear you play it when you're done learning it! =)
My god this is amazing. Tempo is great. Makes the peice that much better and more enjoyable plus , it was the full version! I've been trying to find a cover all day that did the full version or at least the studio recording.
@XLovxEscxThexFteX Listen to the song a TON, piano, then keep messing with the hands separately, once you have both parts, practice them together, every time you can't get it right, listen to it on piano, it helps me!
amazing job! you should post a tutorial for it, because i'm learning it but my fingering positions are really awkward. your transitions look really smooth, so it would help if i could watch them up close :)
Try not to rush the jazz part at the end. let it flow. you seem to have a rigid style of playing, try to make it more flowing, more smooth. better fits the song. have fun with it. other than that, good job
i know people far higher grade than that, and have nothing on you.
one of my favourite tunes ever, i have been in the jazz, drum & bass and hiphop industry for 21 years and never found a better peice of music.
top stuff mate.
Pretty good job playing the song! (Not perfect, but you know that...but certainly better than others on the web!)
To those wanting to review for sure what the song should sound like, there are some good MIDI files around.
hey that was really fuckin cool! I randomly decided to start learning this song again today, and so i looked for some videos on youtube to hear and waala! Thank you for sharing your talent and joy with the world. nuff said :)
I'm just learning to play, I've owned a piano for 8 years and have never played it, so better late than never...someday it would be nice to be able to play that...I've always liked that song...excellent job... :-)
I need to get a video of my dad playing this song, he's the austin piano man and he's really good at this song. I'll try to post the video soon, he does a swing version of this but it sounds relatively the same.
Please don't delete this version! It has a better view of your hands, and I'm trying to learn this piece without a teacher. This video has been very helpful! The new video is very good, but this has a better view.
Will still like it right on into the Spring and Summer! I'm sure Sparky loves it for all Eternity! You have nothing to apologize for, but don't let that go to your head! You got talent, don't mess it up with pride and ambition.
A keyboardist myself, and after playing for more years than I care to remember..lol...FANTASTIC JOB. It's such a simple tune to LISTEN to, not easy to PLAY. (It takes me a few attempts to get that rhythm down..lol!)
That's impressive - your timing and tempo almost didn't vary at all, even without a metronome. Excellent work. I hope to see more! Get a friend of yours to play the snare drum with a brush and you'll be all set!
I'd just like to say that you are awesome! I don't play piano, but after seeing this I want to learn even more! And if you could make a how-to video for this song, I would love that too! Thanks, take care!
I always choose this version to share because you play the ENTIRE song. Cool.
Bravo!!! Bravo!!! Good job! I always loved that tune. It is really cool watching how it is played.
Two questions for "the 40"...what didn't you like about it?...do you think you can do better?
No mistakes! This is a jazz piece and other than the main melody there's plenty of room to play around with it. Even Mr Guaraldi didn't play it exactly the same every time he played it.
WELL DONE!!!
Nice job. ^^ I'm just about to learn this. Unfortunately my sight reading skillages are horrible so I decided to go on youtube and hear how the left hand fit in with the right. Well, wish me luck. lol. xD
Hey, great job! I was wondering what chord you play at 1:49. It's the eb7 on the and of two and the unknown mystery chord would be on beat three. Please give me the name and voicing. Thanks!
That was pretty friggin' good! The way you were settin' us up, I thought it was gonna suck. That was pretty friggin'awesome! You got some guts for tryin' those tough 'jazzy' parts! Real nice!
Dude, you rock. I could never get my left hand and right hand to do that. I need way more practice and a good piano. I'm also missing part of my right hand due to an accident.
Don't give up.
