Margaret, they made A LOT of shows, including "Murder She Wrote." However, in my opinion, they caught lightning in a bottle in the "Columbo" NBC television series.
Peter Falk was one of the most important actors in TV history. His portrayal of Lt. Columbo was as important to dramatic TV as Lucille Ball was to Comedy, period.
Amazing man. Sad about his passing in December 2020. His story about writing a feature length script and selling it to Universal for half a million and it never got made. I love his writer speaks interview. One of the best. Great writer, so much to learn from him even now. Vale William Link.
Actually, Columbo's first name is Francis. Though he didn't give the name away, Falk explained that Columbo was embarrassed by his first name so he never used it.
Prescription Murder, 1968, the Sunday night mystery Movie Series, incredible TV, was like watching magic every 3 weeks, first choice to play Columbo was Bing Crosby, but the years the show ran was 1971, to 1978, then went off till the late 80s as a TV movie and ran infrequently thru the 90s
Simply wonderful listening to Link’s Columbo’s memories.
It actually started in 1971 as a series.
One of the best and most important writers in the history of American Television.

In one of the episodes they show Columbo's badge and someone did a screencap. His first name is Frank.
