Thank you so very much for posting a basic beginning tutorial that is thorough. I'm a REAL beginner, so I needed to be told how to wet my brush and how to make swatches. Thank you!
I've never used watercolors and don't have an "artsy" bone in my body when it comes to visual arts. But, watching this video was so incredibly calming, that I'm very tempted to see what I can do. I'll never know if I don't try, right?!😊
In contrast to other tutorials I've watched, you don't condescend to your audience as you illustrate the very first baby steps to those of us learning the fundamentals. I appreciate that. As I find my way in this new medium of expression, I'll remember your very helpful advice. Thank you.
It’s so nice to have a beginners video that says ‘play around with it, it’s supposed to be fun’ because yes it is and it’s nice to be validated in making swatches and just playing around with the brushes and colours with no real aim other than to see what they do
This is absolutely awesome, thank you so much. I'm an absolute beginner. I have my brush, a midrange pad of paper and a small set of paints and this is a really good beginner lesson!
My biggest struggle when I first started was starting too dark - most of my first watercolor paintings had big dark blobs because I would try to fix the dark areas and add detail and it would just get overworked and awful!😂 I had to forget how I painted with oils & acrylics and truly be a beginner! I think this series you are doing will tremendously help watercolor beginners!😉👍🏼it’s a lot of work, you are sweet & generous to do it! I pray your efforts are blessed!
Oh I agree with this 100% ~ I first attempted watercolor like I paint with oils and that is not how to do it! I'm always happy to help and hope this series will be valuable for beginners. Thanks Hannah for the kind comment! You're so sweet 😊
I love how you just played around with the paints and the brushes and didnt worry about making something that had to look good but you just wanted to make it fun. I think that's the most important thing. I can be a little hard on myself sometimes with things that are supposed to be fun so seeing this felt really refreshing
I bought water color supplies 22 years ago. I know because I dated a few doodles. Life got so busy with teaching, working, getting married, having 3 sons, 3 big moves around the country. And this is the first time I decided to dig them back out. Some things need replacing but not everything. I feel like I have my new summer project now that the boys are teens (19-13). It almost means more to do this a second time. So much life and experience between my first interest and second. Can’t wait!
I’ve been making my way through your videos, I love how detailed and patient they are. I’ve never done anything remotely artistic in my 33 years of life, but for some reason decided to buy myself some really basic watercolors in Hobby Lobby the other day. I’ve been too afraid to use them 🙈 I’m so afraid of “messing up.” Considering I’ve never used them before and I’m probably not some secret watercolor prodigy, I’m sure I’ll mess up a ton. But the thought of making mistakes with the new pretty paint & paper is so intimidating!
Welcome to the world of watercolor Liza! Just know that you must mess up, see it as a thing you must do. That’s the only way you’ll improve and learn! Welcome the mistakes 😊

Thank you so much for this! I was actually inspired by Beatrix Potter's work with Peter Rabbit that's why I took up to learn watercolor. I must say, I was very puzzled at first with all the other videos on youtube. But this video helped me to relax and just play around with the colors and brushes. I love how basic this video is; just literally someone from scratch could follow. I mean when I very first discovered watercolors, I didn't even know I needed 2 jars! 😂😅 Anyway, thanks again and sending lots of love. Keep safe~ 😊💕
@@AllisonLyonArt You're welcome, your tutorials are informative~ 😊💕 And I'm actually watching and following along the whole beginner playlist right now. Can't thank you enough 😁
My grandpa is really good at water painting and stuff and I know nothing about it, he bought me a set and I kinda wanna get into it, it’s hard for me not to quit because I get bored because of how bad I am at artistic stuff.
I've never painted before and have wanted to learn - just got my first watercolor set in the mail! I really appreciated this tutorial - many of the other beginner ones I found weren't actually beginner. I also appreciated that you said to be patient - that's part of the learning process! Thank you!
Thank you for starting at the very basic. I've seen some videos where they started with landscapes and I was so frustrated. I chose this because I wanted a release with minimal costs involved on the beginning. So, thank you so much.
@@AllisonLyonArt one question though...I bought some watercolor pencils. Can they be used in place of a color pallet or do you recommend the pallet just for simplicity sake? I do think I need to purchase an additional round brush; possibly #8 as mine are either too small or chisel shaped so I don't mind the additional purchase while I'm there if it would prove beneficial.

Great Video! My wife gifted me a watercolor set since I mentioned I was interested and this is helping me get over some of my fears about my non-skills.
I got a big art set that included oils, acrylic and water colours along with brushes but the brushes aren’t marked as what is what. Been really struggling trying to figure out what goes to what. It would be nice if these tutorials showed actual cleaning of brushes, dipping in water, dipping on paper towel etc. those things you take for granted, they are ALWAYS off screen would be incredibly helpful to actually see. Thank you for actually showing how you load your brush, and at least saying what your doing when you clean it.
Everyone is new at some point- to whatever they're learning... keep at it !!! Just play with your favorite colors and see them blend & move on the paper, as you add a different color! Feel free to express yourself as a child, without a worry or care... enjoy the freedom to make whatever you want... bookmarks, leaves, flowers, abstract art. Bless you on your journey and have fun!!!
I have learned more in this short video than in the 6 two hour classes I am now taking. Next week will be week 7. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and for giving us beginners an insight into WC. Can you also show your jars when you add or clean water since this is a major issue with me. Thanks again. Look forward to more videos from you. Lora from London, Ontario Canada

Dollar general has tube water colors brushes and paper same with some oil and aryclinc I’m sure it sucks but to have a full line of art supplies is interesting
@@expressyourpath well seeing black and white are not colours it’ can’t be colour theory shades or tints are virtually the same. A variation in colours. Light or dark cool or warm achieved with water added or oil or medium
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with this today. After I swatched the hues, I wondered why there was a white in the pan, and realized it's to blend with the other colors. So I started making tints. So many beautiful pastels came from it. Plus, I learned I love the brush I used. Things came easier (use of brush, making the strokes) the more I practiced with them. I'm so pleased! Tomorrow, I'm going to swatch the shades (combining the hues with black). I can't wait.
The brushes affordable ? 😭😭😭 Ma'am they're 6,000 rupees Indian currency

I don't remember what they're called, but there are devices that can help you hold onto the brush so that you're using less muscle on holding, and you can concentrate better on being steady.
How do you not get an outline of the brush strokes when you’re pulling the darker shades out like that? I’ve tried every ratio of paint to water I can possibly think of, even measuring with little bottles, and it does not make any difference!
Your voice is very pleasant. Thank you for sharing. I always wanted to learn how to paint with watercolors. I will continue to watch your other tutorials.

New subscriber …. I don’t have your brushes I bought watercolor paint off of Amazon and it came in today and all I got with this set was the tiniest brush. I really want to learn… ❤️
I am trying to do the kind of tree you do in the blue circle but there is always too much water… it always makes a mess… so a video is not really useful I guess. You also need good brushes, not shitty ones…
Been wanting to learn watercolors, am absolute beginner. So I've looked at about 25 videos. Yours is the most helpful out of the lot. It gets brush to paper real quick but doesn't ignore the basics. Nor does it bog newbies with color wheel/theory, which is necessary for sure, but most people want instant gratification. So Thank YOU, yours is the one I was searching for!!
Wow. Great tutorial and with just the right amount of information. We need to know about these before jumping into a failed attempt. I feel like my success is more likely to take this slowly and build my skill set.
Thank you so much for this video. I am so excited to learn. I am a beginner. Thank you so much. Do you still teach every Friday ? you said at 10am. I would love to attend to class. Please let me know. Thank you!
I’ve got and used every medium (well not every that ball of squishy graphite isn’t on my list) and we all need an absolute day one video for them. Even a day two four eight and so on. The thought process to stuff is needed. “The white of the paper is your white.” (Really no need to explain white when mixing color at this level and doesn’t overwhelm the learner) “Use less water with dark, more with light.” “First layers use more water.” (Some don’t understand watercolor is in layers). “Get out all your brushes and play around” many don’t explain the instruments the importance of the brush, only the medium. Explained how one handles the brush makes the difference. The brush isn’t magic and not need out input and hand movements are often simple.. and like all magic tricks when you know how it demystifies the whole thing. Exactly what beginners need is the inner dialogue of the teacher…

I just got watercolors so I can color stamped images. And maybe some abstract backgrounds that don’t require much drawing :)
Thank you so much!! This is helping me so much, bcs my painting is really bad and that's make me feel dummie
Thank you very much! It is super helpful. I am completely a beginner!
Wow I’m glad you’re getting so much out of my videos! I’ll definitely try to show my jar in future tutorials 😊
This is the first video on youtube that has helped me on where to start in water colour painting ,, nice and easy to follow thanks Allison ,,subscribing NOW 🌝
THANK YOU so much for this video and explaining the cups everytime you dip in. I think it would also be helpful to keep the cups in the shot.
Super helpful! I'm checking out your whole channel now
Dollar general has tube water colors brushes and paper same with some oil and aryclinc I’m sure it sucks but to have a full line of art supplies is interesting
Mine still in the package!
tysm! I literally just started doing watercolor today, and this was so helpful and informative. Definitely a sub from me 😄
Technically, when you are adding water (or white paint) you are creating tints. Shades are created when you add black.
Thanks for letting me know :)
Nonsense
@@fionabromby4546 it's basic color theory vocabulary. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tint,_shade_and_tone
I’m glad you’re enjoying watercolor!
The brushes affordable ?
😭😭😭 Ma'am they're 6,000 rupees Indian currency
This was an excellent extreme beginner lesson! I had no idea about any of it, eg had no idea that you could wet the paper before adding colour etc. Great, thank you!
Hi there! Total beginner here lol! Your explanations are awesome and easy! I saw that you offer classes for $7/month..all classes included? Is this for beginners too? Thank you!
I just started with watercolors. I’m not an artist I just wanted to do something different to me. This was so helpful. I struggle with keeping my brush wet.
One question- is mixed media paper ok to use with watercolors?
Thanks for your beginner videos!

That's so exciting!! You'll love watercolor! Thanks for watching 😀
What other watercolor sketchbook's do you recommend? ☺️
Can you do it with subtitles. I cannot listen.
Yep. No sound in mine too

Thank you for posting this - you have made something that looked incredibly difficult an option to learn.
My biggest problem with everything is my hands.I have severe arthritis in my hands and gripping the brushes are difficult. My hands can also be very shaky. PIf I could just
I'm sorry to hear about that Rose! I hope you still find joy painting despite your arthritis :)
I don't remember what they're called, but there are devices that can help you hold onto the brush so that you're using less muscle on holding, and you can concentrate better on being steady.
I'm enjoying these. I'm getting back into watercolor and just having fun relearning the basics
Love the gradient idea!!! I can’t wait to receive my supplies this week!
How do you not get an outline of the brush strokes when you’re pulling the darker shades out like that? I’ve tried every ratio of paint to water I can possibly think of, even measuring with little bottles, and it does not make any difference!
Thank you for your basic tutorial of water painting. I really would like to give this a go. Love your work Allison. 🙂
i just got into watercolor painting! thank you for this! ❤
Your voice is very pleasant. Thank you for sharing. I always wanted to learn how to paint with watercolors. I will continue to watch your other tutorials.
Thank you so much!
thank you! it's really helpful for beginners to start with this kind of tutorial, we also learn to get used to holding the brush. Love it!
I am new to watercolour and just found your channel. Loved the tutorial, thank you. Do you have a tutorial on how to make new colours from the colours in your collection?
Thanks for my first lesson
Thanks for your tutorial, i'm just beginning and i purchased my watercolour paints in ml tubes. Is that okay and how do you suggest start with swatches using those as it's not as easy.
No problem! I would squeeze your tube paints in half pans if you haven't and then swatch them like I do in the video :)
Allison, I’m an 83yo male with interest in photography since middle school. I’ve had an interest in watercolor painting for some time but only recently decided try and continue to stimulate and nourish my brain as long as possible and learn watercolor art. I’m a beginner who asked for supplies for my June birthday and glad to have discovered your well designed classes. I’m ready to go.
@@AllisonLyonArt thanks for your reply. I have ordered the half pans you suggest and signed up for your art course for beginners. 😻
This is a great starter for watercolor! Thank you!
Very amazed! You were explained so much in a short time◇
I ❤❤❤❤❤ painting❤❤🎨 but I am not so good at it.So this is why I am watching your video and I am all ready at tiny bit good and I feel good about myself😊😊
How do you feel about this video?
Am I the only one that feels like I am in kindergarten when I hear Allison speak? :)
Hello - I'm new to your channel, and I'm so Happy I found you! I've been trying to watercolor for quite some time, but never found anyone who would open a tutorial as you have for real beginners. Surprising enough, I've learned so much from this video and I don't feel hesitant to start all over again.........but the right way. You are such a sweet artist and I completely loved watching and listened to your directions. Thank you, Allison, I will be looking for you to watch all your video's. xxx
Hi Maeve I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….🌹🌹
New subscriber …. I don’t have your brushes I bought watercolor paint off of Amazon and it came in today and all I got with this set was the tiniest brush. I really want to learn… ❤️
You'll love watercolor! Have fun 😀
Thanks for the information, it was very helpfull ❤😊
I am trying to do the kind of tree you do in the blue circle but there is always too much water… it always makes a mess… so a video is not really useful I guess. You also need good brushes, not shitty ones…
Thanks. I am revisiting my art background. I never took to watercolor, but going to give it another try. 😁
Have fun! You’ll love it 💗
Thanks so much for the informational video! I must say tho, your voice is so calming and relaxing! Makes listening to your videos that much better☺️
You're so welcome Brenna! :)
is it okay if i just bought the cheapest watercolor sketchbook i could find?
Really enjoyed this video! Looking forward to watching more as I start my watercolor journey in 2022! Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
hey how come your nails have a gradient?? like the lower half of your nails are gray? is it a health condition?
Been wanting to learn watercolors, am absolute beginner. So I've looked at about 25 videos. Yours is the most helpful out of the lot. It gets brush to paper real quick but doesn't ignore the basics. Nor does it bog newbies with color wheel/theory, which is necessary for sure, but most people want instant gratification. So Thank YOU, yours is the one I was searching for!!
Wow thank you, I'm glad you find my videos so helpful!!
Might be because I’m on an iPad, but I can’t see your supplies list
That teal and blue in the pan is sooo wonderful. 😍 thank you for posting this tutorial
Wow. Great tutorial and with just the right amount of information. We need to know about these before jumping into a failed attempt. I feel like my success is more likely to take this slowly and build my skill set.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man the moat stasfying vid in my life respect u got nre follower
Thank you very ❤ I want say that camel colour is harder to draw?
Thank you so much. I am wanting to give this a try andt his was so concise and easy.
Thank you so much for this video. I am so excited to learn. I am a beginner. Thank you so much. Do you still teach every Friday ? you said at 10am. I would love to attend to class. Please let me know. Thank you!
The yellow does not have a lighter color but I really l❤ve it😊😊❤
Thats actually so helpful thank you for sharing
♥ very much enjoyed this very delightful, interesting and informative video. 👍👍
Your voice is adorable and your vibe is even better!!!💫💜💫💜💫💜
I’ve got and used every medium (well not every that ball of squishy graphite isn’t on my list) and we all need an absolute day one video for them. Even a day two four eight and so on. The thought process to stuff is needed.
“The white of the paper is your white.” (Really no need to explain white when mixing color at this level and doesn’t overwhelm the learner)
“Use less water with dark, more with light.”
“First layers use more water.” (Some don’t understand watercolor is in layers).
This video didn't teach me anything :(
