Drowsy Maggie is a popular and upbeat fiddle tune. I hope this tutorial helps you learn how to play the tune! It's definitely a tune that is often taken to the races and played very fast, so I encourage everyone to try to practice it up to a faster tempo. If you are finding it difficult to scoot between all the "E's" in the tune, just know that it's perfectly fine to play the "main notes" instead. That is why I try to point them out for people. The E's are mainly drone/chord notes. They add a cool Irish-vibe to the tune, but they don't carry the melody, so it's okay to leave them out. The instruments playing chords have those drone note tones covered. ^^
I hope this tutorial helps you learn the tune, and happy fiddling! =)

Katy: I’ve taken a few classes and I already play guitar and mandolin so picking this up is a natural. That said, I just wanted to tell you what an incredible treasure you are in these incredibly trying times. I’m a waiter which means I’ve been given (at least) two weeks of no work. There are a lot of people with no outlets, no creative way to handle this crazy stress we’re all going through. Well, I’ve got you! (And not in any kind of weird, stalky kind of way). It just means I can practice and learn, and learn and practice...So like, who needs money or social contact when there’s music to learn!! Thank you so much!
Hey Katy, thanks for the tutorial. I've had a violin for a few years now but never really picked it up (naturally guitarist and pianist) and thanks to your tutorial, I've learned my first song on the violin!
Hi Katy, Five years later and your post is still picking up new fans! Thanks for this lovely video, you are so nice...trying to keep up with you is pretty funny!
Much thanks for the great tutorial...as usual. You're a phenomenal instructor with a truly magnificent musical gift.
Thank you so much for this! I bought a violin from gumtree for £80 and have learnt to play the sol-fa scale, ode to joy, the hobbit theme (other channels), frere-jacques (by ear) and my favourite - drunken sailor! which you taught me. i'm currently at 6:00 on this video where you add in the E's. It's tricky, but once I have the melody better memorised after a week or so, then I will move on to this next bit.
but thank you so much! I love your teaching style and it's really helped me learn... if only you did guitar videos too!
This, along with the drunken sailor vid are some of the most helpful things I've found! Rather adorable girl, too!
The Irish Rovers also incorporate this tune into their rendition of Drunken Sailor, as do Paddy and the Rats.
This is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much! I've avoided reels for a long time because I can't seem to wrap my head around the bowing rhythm. Jigs, slides, hornpipes - no problem! Polkas can give me occasional trouble, depending on the speed. But for some reason, reels have always confounded me. The slow-and-easy pace you set in this video was just what I needed to ease me into it! And the explanation of the rocking of the bow and fingering for the extra E notes in the A part was invaluable! Thank you again!
I love these videos because now that we in quarantine it gives me something to do during the day.
Awesome! Two new tutorials on tunes I really wanna learn. At the same time. What a great gift. Great work, as always! :)
Your teaching style is great. When I was younger I always learnt by reading sheet music so it's very interesting to see someone teach it the way you do. Finally picked up the violin again and I'm having a great time trying to match your tempos. Almost got the fastest one down! :)
Only 14k views ? This is one of my favourite tutorial from your's. Thanks for the awesome video!
Love your step by step instructions, it makes playing fiddle fun and more understandable. Two thumbs up 👍👍
I have sheet music for this that I found online, but never knew the real name of what I was playing because the title just said: "D Maggie Simple," so I thought a simple version of "Maggie" in D, or maybe even "Maggie Simple" in D! Thanks to you I now it was "Drowsy Maggie" (simplified).
here is an absolutely superb tutor of the fiddle. more please katy
Many thanks Katy for tutorial. You are best teacher for my . From France
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! Excellent! Perhaps if I learn to play this the way you do, I might be able to impress the ladies and get one to eventually wanna marry me just to be able to listen to me full-time :D
Oh, vanity lol
You make it look sooooo easyyyyy , I'm crying
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial! I look forward to joining in the fun as soon as I get my fiddle back from the violin shop. It hasn’t been played in almost 20 years and needed some love and attention. Let’s see how much muscle memory my fingers still have for this and your other great session and acne tunes.
This is such a fantastic video! Thank you so much for the incredible detail.
You are the best!! Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I hope it helps you learn the tune! ^_^

Thank you for your wonderful tutorial, and for making it seem achievable.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You made it very way to learn.
This is such a great and clear tutorial - esp some tips about ornaments to make things sound more interesting. May I ask, who/what make is your violin and which strings do you use? The tone is really wonderful and works so well across folk and classical - and ragtime too!
Great fun learning 👍👏👏👏☃️
this is one of the songs i played yesterday for dayboro day
Very cool! Thank you. Glad I found you.
I love your tutorials! Thank you!

you are sooo lovely :) thank you for being awesome and making these vids :)
Love it, very helpful!
omg I think I'm in love
¡Great video!
Katy, Thank you so much for this tutorial. I learned a lot from your bowing and phrasing. One question- at the end of the phrase on A part, it sounds like you are doing a little pizzicato on the last note. Is that correct?
This is great. The sheet music would help beginners follow the tune. Is it available.?
Thank you so much for this video. You are an amazing teacher Katy. Do you have any advice on how to increase the pace, i.e. how to start playing this tune faster?
you play sooo well )
Wow. Do you also play the piano? if yes, please make a video of you playing a song on the piano :)
Can you do a tutorial for butterfly waltz I love that song, but I can only figure out the first section
Hi Katy, Awesome music and video. Could you also share the notes for later reference?
LUV IT COULD LISEN 2 YOU ALL DAY /GREAT STUFF

Hi Katy, can you do a tutorial on BLARNEY PILGRIM thanks🇮🇪
Quit being so good
0:22 omg Katy how do you play like that? I can play drowsy Maggie but how do you sound like that?? WOW
how can people dislike that?
Oh my god this is hard on viola
Oh, I'm not the only one. Cool, I hope you learned well. I'm still learning.
You're cute and fun. Nice teacher too. Who are your fidil heroes? The ones that inspired you the most...?Cheers! 😘
I'd say Alasdair Fraser is probably one of the fiddlers who has inspired me the most. Craig Duncan is also awesome, and so is Natalie MacMaster! There are so many amazing fiddlers out there!!
Adorable is right.
I don't understand why there are two different parts A xD
👍👍👍👍👍👍
🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Es very pretty your sweter.
Try a triplet on your first E.
when you're a viola
sheet music would be helpfull. Sheets on google go E B E D E... instead E B D B E... and i prefer your version.
The right hand is more critical for me
So it's kind of like Drunken Sailor?!
This is in her drunken sailor tutorial but she skipped it because it's here. It's an excellent match.
thank you
Thank you for watching -- I hope it helps you learn the tune! :D
