GPS-Navigation is actually not allowed by the rulebook! All you get is the "roadbook". In WRC cars your co-driver has the roadbook and is reading them to you, that's them constantly rambling stuff like " 3 left, over crest, caution, don't cut". On a bike it would be pretty difficult for a guy to sit on the back and read pace notes (besides weighing you down by another 60kg or so). So you get this box in the center (which are around 300-400 bucks, there's manual ones too but you'd have to take one hand off the handles which is not ideal) along with Tripmasters and you use those two to navigate. If it says 300m on the roadbook, you ride until the tripmaster says 300 make the turn and reset the tripmaster a.s.o. The scrolls look a bit like a roll of TP but don't confuse the two because a TP roll won't be easy to read from or write on...don't ask me how I know.
I've always wondered how all that mapping stuff affects the handling of the bike. Does it feel quite heavy compared to a standard bike? or is it balanced in such away it doesn't affect you much?

@@JD-zy6em There are speed limits in some some dakar stages like in a road that goes through a village. Back in the days safari rally was actually a rally in public roads so they had to drive slow. It was like a TSD rally.
you might think why not gps instead, no brother.. gps is not verry acurate to tell how much angle the turn is and what obstacle ahead, there for you need some spesific map like that scroll paper to work
As I understand it, carbs are more durable in harsh environments, simpler and easier to fix out in the middle of nowhere. Fuel injection is fine for everyday use, but if you're crossing an African or South American desert on a motorcycle, you want a carb.
