That was a very enjoyable documentary. It actually felt like I was there with you. The solitude and the peace is very appealing but the sadness of the gulag is awful. Thank you so much for posting this. Kristian (The UK)

Greetings from Russia! Thank you for sharing your trip with other people.
My mother’s family had been sent to one of the Kolyma Gulags. Mum grew up in Magadan and moved to Moscow soon after school. Today we live mostly in Belgium and Switzerland. Planning to visit the region in the near future.
Ещё раз спасибо большое Вам, Золтан!

I suggest checking out Mr. Jones. It doesn't depict the actual Gulags, but does showcase, in gruesome detail, the manmade famine in the early 1930s that was hidden from the rest of the world.

Another great book is " Into the Whirlwind " About a female school teacher , who was suddenly arrested on bogus charges and sentanced to 10 years in the camps . She survived of course to write the book . One thing l remember ( l read it about 40 years ago ) that there was a German solider that protected her. Before you get on your high horses , it's just what she wrote , it stuck in my mind .Although l had a lot of sympathies for Russia l could never understand how they could be so cruel to their own people , unless " The Terror " worked so well they were all, petrified . But then l think where are the stories of the small mercies done by the guards . I will end it here friends and just continue with my wonderings. Great vid friend .

You were right to conclude yourself that was probably Stalin's terror and not the Russian people, unlike the Germans who were brainwashed into hating and becoming a terror to their own people.

Thank you for recording this history, well, what is left of it. The unspeakable suffering of the prisoners in such a place as this is just beyond the imagination of those of us brought up in the warm, comfortable west, isn't it?. Below, someone comments that their suffering will be forgotten, but we have not forgotten the suffering of the Decembrists (mostly aristocratic revolutionaries of 1825) and their brave wives, some of whom followed their husbands to Siberia and spent years with them there. And surely Solzhenitsyn's 'Archipelago' will live for ever.

It's one of the most interesting collections of short stories that I've ever read - very powerful and historically important writing. Not to take anything whatsoever away from Solzhenitsyn, whom I greatly admire, but Shalamov deserves to be just as famous, in my opinion.

Every time I see untamed wilderness in Russia or Canada all I ever think about is do people see the Yeti there? They say that Russia is the home of the Yeti and we know the story of the Dunnlov pass incident and it makes me wonder if people in the farthest north of Russia have seen the same creatures? It's crazy how the Russians would put towns and camps in these areas! The temperature during the winter is something like 50 below! I can't imagine anyone living there! Then to force prisoners to work in such a brutal place is just crazy!
